14 best bass combo amplifiers

Bass combo amplifiers, often referred to as bass combos, are musical amplification systems designed specifically for bass guitars. These amplifiers combine the amplifier head and speaker(s) into a single unit, providing an all-in-one solution for bass players. Here's what you need to know about bass combo amplifiers:

  1. Integrated Design: Bass combo amplifiers combine the amplifier circuitry and the speaker(s) into a single, portable unit. This integration makes them convenient for practice, rehearsals, and smaller gigs where a separate amplifier head and speaker cabinet may be impractical.

  2. Amplifier Power: Bass combos come in a range of power ratings, typically measured in watts. The power rating determines the amplifier's volume and ability to reproduce low-frequency bass tones. Higher-wattage combos are suitable for larger venues and louder performances, while lower-wattage models are ideal for practice and smaller gigs.

  3. Speaker Configuration: Bass combo amplifiers can have different speaker configurations, such as one 12-inch speaker, two 10-inch speakers, or multiple speakers. The choice of configuration affects the amplifier's overall sound and dispersion.

  4. Tone Shaping: Bass combos often include built-in tone controls, such as bass, midrange, and treble EQ knobs. These controls allow bass players to shape their sound and tailor it to their preferences or the musical genre they're playing.

  5. Input Options: Most bass combo amplifiers offer both passive and active input options to accommodate different types of bass guitars. Active inputs are suitable for instruments with built-in preamps, while passive inputs are for instruments without active electronics.

  6. Effects and Features: Some bass combo amplifiers come with built-in effects like reverb, chorus, and distortion. Additionally, many modern models include features such as headphone jacks, auxiliary inputs for playing along with music, and direct output options for connecting to a mixing console or recording interface.

  7. Portability: Bass combos are generally more portable and easier to transport compared to separate amplifier heads and speaker cabinets. This makes them a popular choice for musicians who need a versatile and compact setup.

  8. Versatility: Bass combo amplifiers are suitable for a wide range of musical styles and settings. They are commonly used in genres like rock, jazz, funk, and more.

  9. Maintenance: Regular maintenance is essential to keep a bass combo amplifier in good working condition. This includes cleaning the grille, checking and tightening connections, and occasionally replacing speaker components if necessary.

  10. Notable Brands: Several well-known manufacturers produce high-quality bass combo amplifiers, including Ampeg, Fender, Gallien-Krueger, Ashdown, and Hartke, among others.

In summary, bass combo amplifiers are convenient, all-in-one solutions for bass guitar amplification. They combine the amplifier head and speaker(s) in a single unit, offering different power ratings, speaker configurations, and tone-shaping options to suit the needs of bass players across various musical genres and settings. Their portability and versatility make them a popular choice for both practice and performance.

User questions & answers

Question: Is it worth the extra $300 to get the Rumble 500 head and the 410 and 115 cab, rather than the combo + the 115 extension
Answer: Yes it does, short scale means frets are slightly closer together, and the neck itself is thinner than a strat, and is non gloss which makes it easier to slide your hand up and down the neck.
Question: As a stand alone unit, are the 210's pushing 500 watts, or do you need to attach another cabinet at lower ohms to get your 500 watts
Answer: I had to use the standard EADG, 4 string. Just standard Ernie balls worked great. I tried to go thicker, but they wouldn't fit through the bridge holes.
Question: I'm helping a friend pick out a bass & amp for her son. Would this amp be loud enough for a small entry-level garage band
Answer: Hi. Sorry don't remember. If it did it would be the cheap crappy one they always send. Get a good one would be my advice. Have funS
Question: is this amp usable in new zealand
Answer: About 36 inches

Orange Crush Bass 100

Taking elements from our flagship 4 Stroke and OB1 series bass amps, and with enough power for smaller venues, the Crush Bass 100 is a seriously versatile combo in both sound and application. Using high-end engineering techniques not usually found on combos of this type, the key to the Crush Bass 100’s immensely fat and detailed tone is the amplifier’s 100 Watt output section. The choice of discrete components (rather than common integrated circuits) gives the amp sensational levels of clarity across the entire spectrum, and the internal 15” speaker means that even the most subterranean frequencies come through loud and clear.

Coupled to the output stage is an equally powerful preamp. The active EQ section with its sweepable parametric mid band allows players to fine tune the Crush Bass 100 to any style, plus our ‘bi-amp’ inspired Gain and Blend circuit adds even more tonal variety. These interactive controls add extra harmonic content and variable levels of grit to the core bass tone, perfect for creating earthy vintage riffs or even savagely distorted mayhem, without ever losing the all-important low end. They can also be switched in remotely via the optional footswitch. Along with a balanced line output, the Crush Bass 100 also has a buffered effects loop, an integrated tuner, aux. input and a Cabsim-loaded headphone output for silent practice. From the bedroom to the stage, this amp covers all bases.

Ever since the founding of the company in 1968, Orange has been a pioneering force in the guitar amplification industry. Our commitment to craftsmanship and quality control has allowed our amplifiers to stand the test of time, giving their owners as much pleasure now, as the day they were bought. Today, with a team of the world’s finest amplifier engineers, Orange continues to push back the boundaries of conventional amplifier design.

Powerful Active Parametric EQ

The Crush Bass 100 features an EQ circuit inspired by our prestigious 4 Stroke Series amplifiers. At its centre is a parametric mid band. This presents players with a much greater degree of control over the sound than a traditional EQ, allowing them to vary the frequencies they want hear. The mid band covers a wide range, sweeping from 300Hz (fully anti-clockwise) to 2.7kHz (fully clockwise), meaning this amp can be fine tuned to suit any musical style. The active circuitry allows for up to 15dB of boost or cut on the bass and middle frequencies, and up to 20dB on the treble side.

Blend & Gain

Lifted straight from our popular OB1 Series amps, the Blend and Gain controls are a nod to the many bass players who experiment with guitar and bass amps simultaneously. In this ‘bi-amped’ setup, layers of harmonics and distortion from the guitar amp are blended with the core bass tone to create the ultimate full-range live sound. The Crush Bass 100’s Gain and Blend controls create the same effect in a single package, adding extra bite and crispness to the tone at lower gain settings, right up to all-out filth with the dials cranked. These controls can also be engaged remotely with the optional FS-1 footswitch, ideal for fattening your sound on the fly.

Discrete Output Stage & Analogue Design

At the heart of the Crush Bass 100 is its 100 Watt output stage. Using discrete circuitry, rather than ICs (integrated circuits) ensures a purer and even more forceful delivery with outstanding clarity and definition. The Crush Bass 100 houses a 15” speaker with a reflex port for improved low end response. The buffered effects loop has been engineered for maximum transparency, ensuring your pedal arsenal will perform at its peak.

Balanced Output, Cabsim Headphone Output, Aux Input & Tuner

The Crush Bass 100 features a balanced output (post EQ) for connecting to a PA for live situations. The headphone output features our Cabsim circuitry which emulates the response of our stage-ready OBC bass speaker cabinets during silent practice. This signal can also be sent to a console for seriously authentic direct recording. The Aux. input allows for connecting external audio sources for backing tracks whilst the handy onboard tuner makes for quick tune-ups between jams.

Brian 'Head' Welch - KoRn

“KoRn has always been in the game of matching different amp tones and blending them together in the studio. And Orange has always been right there in the mix!"

Sergio Vega - Bass Player for Deftones/Quicksand

"This sounds really meaty. We tweaked it [the Crush Bass combo] for a about 30 seconds tops and we got a great sound without investing much time into it. With the Crush Bass 50, I see myself using it on home, recording with it, taking it on the road, recording at the hotel. This thing sounds really good. I could use this live in certain capacities and certain gigs and I wouldn’t have any issue bringing this into a space."

Glenn Hughes - Bassist for Deep Purple

"You can go in the studio, take that bass combo and make your album with something like that, it’s truly outstanding. It’s gritty, it’s punchy, sustain is so important and it’s certainly got all that."

User questions & answers

Question: What size is the speaker in the cabinet
Answer: I have the 210 combo and 115 extension. The 115 comes with wheels and I put the 210 on a rock and roller cart. Extremely portable and very loud, it will get louder than your ears can stand. I would say the combo and 115 are plenty. Not worth getting the head and 410, just a waste of money and more weight to carry around.
Question: The vox vex50 bass amp combo works with batteries or is rechargeble
Answer: As a standalone unit the two 10 inch speakers are pushing 350 Watts at 8 ohms (Internal). You need to attach an external 8 ohm speaker cabinet to get 500 Watts. Attaching the external 8 ohm speaker cabinet brings the total impedance down to 4 ohms and that is when you get the maximum 500 Watts.
Question: Does it have a line out
Answer: I remember way back when I was in my first band. I had an ampeg B-15 and it was woefully underpowered. All I got out of it was a ton of distortion. It can be very frustrating for a new player to have to deal with poor sound. I’ve known guys who have given up playing because of the frustration of dealing with noise instead of music. I would use a 25w amp for practicing by myself but for a garage band I would go with a minimum of 100w.
Question: does the direct out transmit pre or post amp signal
Answer: I turned mine upside down and it still worked so I suppose it will be OK down there. (On mine, input power is marked 100-120V @ 50-60 HZ, 70W.)

  • MP3/Line In for jamming along or listening to music
  • Emulated Line Out for 'silent' practice or recording

User questions & answers

Question: Can this be used during a parade for portable usage
Answer: It is better used inside, but it can be used for a parade. You may have to mic it. Not sure if it would be loud enough without.
Question: Please tell me, does the ⅛" imput socket on the amplifier's top (described as an MP3 input "for jamming along") accept and play an analog/mic signal
Answer: No, it's line level input socket. You can't connect microphone directly to the line level input socket. You need a microphone pre-amplifier for that. As soon your microphone is amplified ( using an optional mic pre-amp) you can connect it to that "MP3" line level socket.
Question: Really? david bowie's album name and logo? how's this possible
Answer: We love Bowie too, but Blackstar started in 2007, long before his 2016 album.
Question: I have a question. The model Specified on this page is for bass guitar
Answer: Yes, it is specified for bass guitar. The compressor is useful for something this small being used for bass and actually at low volumes reproduces low B better than expected.

User questions & answers

Question: How does this compare to the hartke vx3500 or the ashdown combo amps
Answer: You'll find it's easier to move, has the same punchy tone, and just about the same power. You really only get the 450 watt power by adding a extention speaker. I added a 15" Ampeg bass extention cab to get a real bottom end growl, and I got it. Great high and growling lows -- I couldn't ask more from this combo. Hope this helps.
Question: Can the xlr line out be used for another speaker cab or does this amp have an external speaker line out
Answer: The Ampeg BA115v2 does not have a line out for any external speakers. The xlr line out is for connection to a mixer or recording setups. The Ampeg BA210 comes with a 1/4" output jack for an external speaker.
Question: Can you hook up a microphone
Answer: There isn't an XLR input on this amp. There is a 1/4" input, a 1/4" aux input, and a 3.5mm phones input. You could hook up a microphone if the mike cord has a 1/4" plug in.
Question: Is this a stand alone 450 watt amp or do you need an extension cabinet to achieve the full 450 watts and its only half that by itself
Answer: If you want the full 450, you need to add an extention cab to get the ohms right. I highly recommend a 15" cab -- you get some great growling lows ...

User questions & answers

Question: what are its dimensions and does it come with a power supply
Answer: The combo is 18" high, 15.7" wide, and 13.2" deep. It comes with a standard 120VAC power cable.
Question: What is the speaker wattage of the max 100? Is it a100 watt
Answer: No, it’s a 50 watt.
Question: What is the weight of this amp? Specs say 1 lb, but that's highly unlikely
Answer: Very unlikely. ;) Even so, I double-checked the weight on my bathroom scale. It's a VERY manageable 25 pounds (or 11.3 kilograms).
Question: Can a microphone also be hook up for playing the guitar and sing at the same time? Thanks
Answer: Short answer: Maybe. Longer answer: There's an Auxiliary Input (3.5mm) that's normally for audio input from an iPod/phone/external music source. You might be able to plug in a microphone with a 3.5mm plug, but I don't know if the signal would be strong enough to complete with the bass. You might be better off dropping Peavey a note and getting your answer direct from them.

Monoprice 611815 15Watt, 1 x 12 Guitar Combo Tube Amplifier with Celestion Speaker & Spring Reverb

Based on 508 reviews Check latest price

Product description

Get superior guitar tone and flexibility using this 15-Watt, 1x12 Guitar Combo Tube Amplifier with Celestion Speaker & Spring Reverb from Monoprice! As the title indicates, this guitar amplifier features a 15-watt tube power amplifier and a Celestion brand speaker. It uses three ECC83/12AX7 preamplification tubes and two EL84 power tubes for the amplifier section, plus a Celestion Red Truvox 1215 speaker. The EL84 tube is the tube that powered the Mullard amplifiers favored by the British Invasion bands of the 1960s. It can produce a full output from a relatively small signal and is therefore easily overdriven to produce that distinctive chiming, treble-heavy sound, especially when compared to the 6L6 tubes more commonly used in 1960s era American guitar amps. The amplifier handles frequencies between 80Hz and 10kHz, with hum and noise -75dB below the rated power and 0.5% total harmonic distortion. It includes a Low input and a High input, with the former attenuating the signal by approximately 50% and the latter being easier to overdrive. The cabinet is ported in the rear and features a leather handle, cloth speaker grill, and a cream-colored, textured, synthetic leather exterior with chrome corner guards. The amp features a genuine spring reverb with the ability to enable it remotely using a foot switch. It supports FX send and receive, so you can either connect it to an effects processor or use the send/receive connections as line out and line in connections. Two inputs allow you to select between the full power mode and a 1 watt limited amplification mode for recording or late night practice sessions.

User questions & answers

Question: Can I use my acoustic I rig mic with this? With the headphone type plug
Answer: there is an AUX IN jack that takes a 3.5mm plug. Yes.
Question: Will this sound good if I’m Playin piano using my midi keyboard
Answer: Depends on how good your speakers are in your keyboard if your keyboard has stereo speakers they're probably going to sound better but as far as a little amp goes it's adequate
Question: what kind of cable do I need to connect to my Uke
Answer: Dear JOYO fan or user, it required a normal audio cable connect to Uke. thanks for your question.
Question: Can a microphone be plugged into this amplifier
Answer: Yes but you'll want to be aware that the amp takes a 1/4" plug, so you might need a converter. I also would be cautious if the mic requires phantom power. The amp doesnt provide it, so you'll need to get it elsewhere. If you have a mic preamp, then you could also plug the mic into that and the preamp into the aux jack, which would allow you to still be able to plug a guitar into the 1/4" jack. However be aware that the aux jack doesnt go through the volume/tone/gain, so you'll need to provide that elsewhere (which is why a preamp would be helpful)
