12 best guitars amps

Guitar amplifiers, often referred to as guitar amps, are essential components of an electric guitar setup. They serve the purpose of amplifying the electric signal from the guitar's pickups, shaping the tone, and projecting it through a speaker. Here's what you need to know about guitar amplifiers:

  1. Types of Guitar Amplifiers:

    • Combo Amplifiers: These all-in-one units combine the amplifier and speaker in a single cabinet. They are popular for their portability and convenience.

    • Head and Cabinet Amplifiers: In this setup, the amplifier (the "head") and speaker cabinet are separate units. It provides flexibility as you can mix and match different heads and cabinets for various tonal options.

    • Acoustic Guitar Amplifiers: Designed specifically for acoustic guitars, these amps reproduce the natural sound of acoustic instruments and often include microphone inputs and built-in effects.

    • Bass Amplifiers: Bass guitar amplifiers are optimized to handle the lower frequencies produced by bass guitars. They come in various configurations, including combos and separate heads and cabinets.

  2. Amplifier Power (Wattage): Amplifiers come in various wattage ratings, which determine their volume output. Lower-wattage amps are suitable for practice and small venues, while higher-wattage amps are better for large stages and venues.

  3. Tone Controls: Most amplifiers include tone controls, such as bass, midrange, and treble knobs, which allow you to shape the tonal characteristics of your guitar. Some amps also offer additional controls like presence and resonance.

  4. Channels: Many guitar amps have multiple channels, typically labeled as clean and overdrive/distortion. This allows you to switch between clean and distorted tones with the press of a footswitch or button.

  5. Effects: Some amplifiers come with built-in effects such as reverb, delay, chorus, and more. Others have effects loops, allowing you to connect external effects pedals.

  6. Speaker Configuration: Guitar amp cabinets can have various speaker configurations, including single-speaker (1x12), two speakers (2x12), and four speakers (4x12), among others. The choice of speaker configuration affects the amp's sound projection and dispersion.

  7. Tube vs. Solid-State Amplifiers:

    • Tube Amplifiers: Tube amps use vacuum tubes (valves) to amplify the signal and are known for their warm, natural, and harmonically rich tone. They are favored by many for their "vintage" sound.

    • Solid-State Amplifiers: Solid-state amps use transistors for amplification. They are generally more reliable and require less maintenance but may have a different tonal character, often described as "clean" or "transparent."

  8. Modeling Amplifiers: Modeling amps emulate the sound of various classic amplifiers and effects. They are versatile and allow you to mimic the tones of different amps and effects pedals in one unit.

  9. Cabinet Materials: The material used to construct the amplifier's cabinet can affect its tone. Common materials include plywood and particleboard.High-end amplifiers often use birch plywood for better resonance and durability.

  10. Maintenance: Tube amplifiers require occasional tube replacement, while solid-state amps are generally low-maintenance. Proper care and regular maintenance can prolong an amplifier's lifespan.

In summary, guitar amplifiers are crucial components in shaping and amplifying the sound of electric and acoustic-electric guitars. They come in various types and configurations, catering to different musical styles and performance needs. Understanding the features and characteristics of different amplifiers can help you choose the right one for your playing style and preferences.

User questions & answers

Question: What kind of power supply does this use? Can I plug into the wall or does it take batteries? I'm not very familiar with amplifiers, thanks
Answer: Documentation does not say, not on the box either. Coverage area indicates it is 2.4. Works very well I wouldn't worry about it. Good luck.
Question: Would this be good for Karaoke (I have a Karaoke Mixer) or for connecting to a Projector to boost the sound
Answer: It depends on the dealer's policy.
Question: Does it come with a wire
Answer: Just received the DWS-3 system today on recommendations from numerous reviews and forums. Plugged it in using my Warwick Thumb 5-string and GK mb500. No discernible difference from using a standard cable. Handled the low B string just fine. I’m confident it will do fine at gig this weekend with GK+SWR Goliath III cab.
Question: Can this amp used for violin? Does it has speakers
Answer: As it is I found that mine did also , after research for a few minutes I found that it was my input jack on the guitar . Don’t know if this helps but I cleaned mine with a burst of compressed air and it helped but ultimately I changed the jack out for a new one and I now have crisp and clear sound .

User questions & answers

Question: can i record through garage band
Answer: honestly I've never separated the cabs I Velcro'd it stacked so its like a full stack, lemme go check THEN...................................... OK checked, heres the lo Down.. the chorus is in full stereo meaning it echos in both right and left speakers however its simultaneous and does not PAN left and right like an echoplex or true stereo echo that I could tell? you'll laugh anyways at the chord that comes with the 103, its like 24 inches long.. WHY? its phone plugs so EASY to find old home style phone cables, dunno your age maybe you've never seen one? yea int he day we had our phones connected to a wall outlet with a cable, its like a small like cat5 (rj45 is the standard name) you've seen cat5 its what your computer hooks up to the Ethernet with..all in all its WELL worth it its a GREAT little amp specially with the full stack setup, the echo works FANTASTIC and quite frankly I wish I had one that worked that well on my bigger stuff despite the non stereo panning, I have a Johnson Two Fifty and a Digitech GSP 2101 studio tube for all that stuff, yea man get a Johnson 150 250 or the digitech GSP 2101 if you want true stereo panning, WOW, I work it in QUAD and can dial it in however I like cuz its FULLY programmable with algorithms!!!tell you what tho I have mic's this little Blackstar and IT ROCKS!!! yup, if you have a board that does stereo panning then there ya go! crank n go, funny what I like to do is plug my acoustic into it then mic the Blackstar through the PA and recording or playing live that way SUCH A NICE CRISP CLEAN SOUND because yo don't have all that power in the way stepping on its own dork soaking up all the interference if ya know what I mean, try it you will be totally surprised, typing in this minuscule dialogue box is difficult at best, why so small Amazon?its a great little box (fact I tried em all cept the orange that I'm told is compatable and it smokes them ALL)not sure what you need it to do but for whatever the hunnerd for both is a FANTASTIC deal considering what it can do and the sound that can come out of it... distortion works well too, I love the little thing i use it at the park then in my bedroom so the neighbors can sleep and I don't have to pay finesfor an electric I use a nice 61 Strat that has some really really hot hand wound Gepettos then those run into a FULL Clapton mid boost, the works, yup so that lil boost in signal really makes that Blackstar a beast in its own rights..all in all I give it 10 stars with the other speaker
Question: it has a footswitch jack, can you go from a clean sound hit the switch and go into over drive for a solo
Answer: Blackstar has their own power supply specifically for this. Amazon sells it on it's own for around $20, and I believe when you buy the 3 pack, the Blackstar power supply comes with it. I can't say for sure, as I bought just the single unit. Save yourself the trouble and buy the 3-pack - the amp on it's own is incredible, and the stack is well worth the price. Just make sure it comes with the proprietary Blackstar power supply.
Question: Does Fuse work with this amp
Answer: absolutely not ! The fly 3 runs on 6volts /positive tip . When you buy the fly on amazon, the planet waves adaptor is suggested . My friend bought the fly to his son and pluged it on a 9 volts adapter...... he blew the amp . You may pay a little more but buy the right adapter, it works well and saves batteries
Question: What is in the box
Answer: Yes, for the extension cabinet, which expands this from 3w to 6w. The 3-pack is a good deal, because a) you get better volume but mainly because b) it includes the power supply, which means that c) the extension cabinet is virtually free.

User questions & answers

Question: Can you gig fine with this
Answer: Yes the power cord do have a mute button
Question: could you plug it into a speaker cabinet
Answer: Yes the software can be updated very easily at home. The Max 360c can even be updated through WiFi.
Question: Can it be plugged into a PA system for live performance
Answer: The screen could be brighter. Dont think the colors of arrows can be changed.
Question: How would this do for a practice amp for a Bass
Answer: I think that the 0.6 watts each measurement, 1.2 watt total must be a mistake, off by a factor of ten. I've tested them against my portable ten watt powered stereo speaker (five watts per channel). They're slightly louder than the portable speaker. I would bet money that these are six watts each, twelve watts total. I'm sorry I don't have a more sophisticated method of testing, but, no way are they just 1.2 watts total.

User questions & answers

Question: Is this a good choice for electroacoustic instruments, keyboards, etc.? I've been told guitar-specific amps can "color" the sound too much
Answer: This is made specifically for guitars. If you use an acoustic it won't sound much like an acoustic would on its own. That said, dont let it stop you from experimentation. That is the whole point of music!
Question: can i use peddles or effects with this amp
Answer: Yes. Its a great sounding practice amp, the 6" speaker can only handle so much. But you can use pedals with it.
Question: does it come with the cable needed to plug it into the wall
Answer: Yes, it comes with a power cable. Great practice amp.
Question: Does this have clean or dirty
Answer: One channel so you have to adjust to get either clean or dirty.

Monoprice 611815 15Watt, 1 x 12 Guitar Combo Tube Amplifier with Celestion Speaker & Spring Reverb

Based on 508 reviews Check latest price

Product description

Get superior guitar tone and flexibility using this 15-Watt, 1x12 Guitar Combo Tube Amplifier with Celestion Speaker & Spring Reverb from Monoprice! As the title indicates, this guitar amplifier features a 15-watt tube power amplifier and a Celestion brand speaker. It uses three ECC83/12AX7 preamplification tubes and two EL84 power tubes for the amplifier section, plus a Celestion Red Truvox 1215 speaker. The EL84 tube is the tube that powered the Mullard amplifiers favored by the British Invasion bands of the 1960s. It can produce a full output from a relatively small signal and is therefore easily overdriven to produce that distinctive chiming, treble-heavy sound, especially when compared to the 6L6 tubes more commonly used in 1960s era American guitar amps. The amplifier handles frequencies between 80Hz and 10kHz, with hum and noise -75dB below the rated power and 0.5% total harmonic distortion. It includes a Low input and a High input, with the former attenuating the signal by approximately 50% and the latter being easier to overdrive. The cabinet is ported in the rear and features a leather handle, cloth speaker grill, and a cream-colored, textured, synthetic leather exterior with chrome corner guards. The amp features a genuine spring reverb with the ability to enable it remotely using a foot switch. It supports FX send and receive, so you can either connect it to an effects processor or use the send/receive connections as line out and line in connections. Two inputs allow you to select between the full power mode and a 1 watt limited amplification mode for recording or late night practice sessions.

User questions & answers

Question: Does it work with the yamaha yev-10x violin? between thr10ii and thr5a which one gives the better sound quality if connected to a yev violin
Answer: I remember way back when I was in my first band. I had an ampeg B-15 and it was woefully underpowered. All I got out of it was a ton of distortion. It can be very frustrating for a new player to have to deal with poor sound. I’ve known guys who have given up playing because of the frustration of dealing with noise instead of music. I would use a 25w amp for practicing by myself but for a garage band I would go with a minimum of 100w.
Question: What's the total power of this amp
Answer: I turned mine upside down and it still worked so I suppose it will be OK down there. (On mine, input power is marked 100-120V @ 50-60 HZ, 70W.)
Question: Would this do well as an acoustic amp, as well as an electric
Answer: I don't see why not. As long as the input is via a 1/4 inch mono plug. It is an amazing little practice amp but don't expect it to reproduce the sounds like a more powerfulamp and 12 inch speaker.
Question: What's the difference between this model and the wl model that's $150 more? i can find no info on yamaha website on what wl mean, etc; thanks
Answer: If you are expecting any kind of real bass feel, this amp won't give it to you. I would rather spend the money on a bass-buddy, it's like a little personal guitar amp. It clips to your belt and you plug your guitar in and then slip on the headphones. For the bass, it gives you several bass setups like 'slap' or 'fretless' . If you don't want to use headphones, run the headphone jack from the bass buddy into a stereo input and you'll find a better sound.

THR ignored the convention that a practice amp should simply be a smaller version of a larger amp, creating a new “third amp” category designed around what players need when they’re playing at home.

Fully-Wireless Experience

All THR-II models feature Bluetooth connectivity for audio playback, the “THR Remote” mobile editor app, and third-party footswitch support.

THR10II Wireless and THR30II Wireless also feature a built-in rechargeable battery and Line 6 wireless receiver. Just grab your THR, your guitar and a Line 6 Relay G10T transmitter (sold separately), and play anywhere your music takes you.

User questions & answers

Question: What is input power as 110 volt, 220 Volt,or 110-240 Volt
Answer: Metal band in a 1000 seat venue-no, local bar,100 people or less, normal drummer should be OK. A friend of mine has the 100 watt version and has been playing local gigs at 50 watts, says its just loud enough, works fine.
Question: Does this come in black
Answer: Yes. The extra features that it brings makes the MKII much more useful.
Question: How does the Aux input work
Answer: Runs the amp at 50 watts, 25 or .5 watts, different levels depending on the volume you need. .5 watt is great for when the kids are sleeping.
Question: Is this suitable for an electric violin
Answer: There are a few more effects on the MkII and the pots for effects are now dual pots to make it easier to dial in... AMP IN is now on the Katana to allow you to plug in a multi-effects board etc and bypass the amp settings.. The "sneaky amps" available on the MkI are blocked out on the MkII.. but you get 5 more voice settings on the 5 amps available for the MkII.. newer and easier software.. Patches made for the MkI work with the MkII, but the MkII patches do not work on the MkI.
