Answer:	There is a chain on the back that allows the part that holds it upright to collapse. The front lip that holds the book in place does not collapse at all, so the item is never completely flat.

Answer:	This is a wonderful cookbook stand. I have had it for a few years now, and it still looks new. It is metal....don't know what kind...but it works with magnets so I have a kitchen timer attached to it as my stainless steel refrigerator will not work with magnets. It holds cookbooks of all sizes. Buy it! You'll love it.

Answer:	The overall measurement is 13-1/8" tall x 13" wide. The overall depth is 7-1/4." The footprint of the legs is 5-1/2" deep x 12-1/2" wide. The depth of the cookbook holder portion in the front is 2-7/8."
