User questions & answers

Question: Does this one refractor have light built in it ? Really cool if had a tiny solar cell ..never needing a battery ! (Idea
Answer: This refractometer is used with outdoor or bright lights. You put your frac or producer water on and point it in the light to get your salinity level. No battery ever required for that. Now... if it’s used for something other than testing chlorides... I don’t know how it’s used.
Question: What's the dimensions of the case this product comes in
Answer: The plastic case is about 8.2 (L) X 3.5 (W) X 2.2 (H) in inches.
Question: How often do you re-calibrate, and when would you know if it needs to be re-calibrated
Answer: I would check about every month or so. As for when you would know if it needed re-calibration just put a few drops of fresh water on lens and see if it reads 0. If it doesn't re-calibrate.
Question: Can I use it fot beer
Answer: I have a brewing refractometer and tried using it to read salinity and it just read 0 on my tank and my pond so I'm guessing there is a difference between the two. I wouldn't have thought so.

User questions & answers

Question: It says calibrate a refractometer or Hydrometer but I see no mention of calibrating for the hydrometer. Can it be used to calibrate a hydrometer, how
Answer: We sell typically sell our 250 ml bottle of AccuBrate to calibrate a hydrometer. If you click on our 250 ml bottle description you will see information about calibrating a hydrometer. The exact steps are on the back of our 250 ml bottle. Basically you shake the AccuBrate, rinse the hydrometer, slowly pour AccuBrate into the hydrometer to avoid bubbles, gently tap the hydrometer to release any bubbles attached to the swingarm. Now read the hydrometer. The salinity should read 1.026. If it reads 1.024 then you know your hydrometer is off by .002. Since there is no way to calibrate a hydrometer you just add .002 to whatever your salinity is when you test your aquarium. - Lexi M at Aquatic Experts
Question: Can I use this calibration liquid on a refractometer use for measuring gravity/brix on wort and beer
Answer: It’s for salinity
Question: Can i use this to calibrate my tds meter also
Answer: No to cailbrate tds I use General Hydroponics use electronic meter reference solutions You can get it here.
Question: So after calibrating using this fluid, my refractometer show 1.022, hydrometer shows 1.024, what does that mean
Answer: Since your reading is at 1.022 you need to re-calibrate your refractometer. It is best to follow the operations manual that came with your refractometer or if you can find your model's manual online. If you do not have a manual here is how I calibrate my refractometer. 1. Make sure your glass prism slide and cover flap are clean. Use distilled water when cleaning. Use a soft clean cloth to completely dry glass prism and cover flap. 2. Add 2 to 3 drops of fluid on your refractometer's prism slide and let it sit for about 60 seconds. This allows the sample to adjust to the temperature of your refractometer. 3. Look into the eyepiece and turn the Calibration Screw with your small screw driver that came with your refractometer. The calibration screw is typically located on the top of the refractometer. Slightly turn the screw until the scale reads 1.026 or 35 ppt 4. Your refractometer is now calibrated and ready to test your aquarium. Your hydrometer reading 1.024 means it is reading a few points low. We typically take a black sharpie and write on our hydrometer plus .002. We just add this to whatever our hydrometer's swing arm points to. When it reads 1.022 we know to add .002 to the reading to get an accurate measurement. Best regards, Laurren at Aquatic Experts

User questions & answers

Question: Unit doesn’t stay calibrated any more still under 1 year how can I get replacement
Answer: Suction tube will be fine if it's a freshly opened bottle
Question: Is the eyepiece adjustable to allow you to focus on the values you're looking at
Answer: First, you would have to define “easily readable”. I have terrible eyesight and bifocals. I need my son to read the numbers because they are so tiny through the eyepiece. It measures quiet accurately and is the gold standard for saltwater aquariums. However, I don’t know if it would work quite as well on a ppt scale. The device measures in specific gravity numbers and ppt. It does read to 0 on the ppt side, but I can’t be sure if it will be that specific for you. You may want to start with the cheaper hydrometer or a more expensive electronic reader. Check out WikiHow’s How to measure salinity. It gives directions on 3 different ways.
Question: Is suction tube long enough or I need to buy wine thief as well
Answer: I have had the same problem and you can calibrate it with distilled water, but mine was still off by 2ppm regardless.
Question: Hoping to test salt level in a fresh water pond which requires 5 ppt, would this be easily readable with this device
Answer: I don't understand your question - can you re-phrase it?

User questions & answers

Question: How do you convert percentage to ppm or mg/l? wife has menieres disease and i'm trying to track our home water supply
Answer: It should. I bought mine along with a Starrett 6" Dail Caliper which has a slightly larger footprint with the dial indicator on it. The only thing I found was I needed to nip the tail end of the foam cut out because it was about 1mm to short. Simple fix nothing to worry about, great case over all

MISCO Palm Abbe Digital Handheld Refractometer, Sodium Chloride Salt Brine Scales, Salometer,% Saturation, Freeze Point Fahrenheit

MISCO Refractometer

Product description

Fahrenheit model - The Palm Abbe Digital Salometer makes it easier and more accurate than ever to measure the saturation (SAL) and freeze point of Sodium Chloride (NaCl) Salt Brine Solutions. Only two drops of fluid are needed to automatically measure degrees saturation, from 0 to 100%, and Freeze Point to -6 degrees Fahrenheit, making it the perfect instrument to accompany a brinemaker.

Food Preservation: The actual practice of preserving food with salt brine can be traced to prehistory. Long before the advent of refrigeration, it was discovered that most bacteria cannot live in highly concentrated salt environments. Early humans discovered that salt and salt brine were useful to dry fruits, pickle vegetables, parch cereal and grains, and preserve game, fish, and seafood. p> Deicing and Refrigeration: The ability of Sodium Chloride to depress the freeze point of water has led to its use as antifreeze or for refrigeration. In large quantities, Sodium Chloride is used to melt ice and snow on streets and highways. In fact, roughly 51% of world output of salt is used on roadways.

The large dual-line LCD display on the Palm Abbe refractometer is easily read, even in dim light, and removes the subjectivity associated with interpreting where a boundary line crosses tiny scale divisions.

Calibration is automatic and does not require the use of special calibration solutions or tools. The Palm Abbe refractometer automatically calibrates itself to water and is ready to use in seconds.
