12 best optical refractometers
An optical refractometer is a scientific instrument used for measuring the refractive index of substances. The refractive index, often denoted as "n," is a dimensionless number that describes how much light bends, or refracts, as it passes through a medium. It is a crucial property for characterizing and identifying various substances, including liquids, solids, and gases. Here are some key points about optical refractometers:
Principle of Operation: Optical refractometers operate based on the principle of Snell's law, which describes the relationship between the angles of incidence and refraction of light at the boundary between two media with different refractive indices. By measuring the angle at which a light beam passes through a sample and its refractive index, the instrument can determine the refractive index of the sample.
Refractive Index: The refractive index is a fundamental optical property that varies with the composition and concentration of substances. It is commonly used to identify and assess the purity or concentration of solutions.Different substances have unique refractive indices, making this measurement valuable in various industries, including chemistry, food and beverage, pharmaceuticals, and more.
Applications:
- Chemistry: Optical refractometers are widely used in chemical laboratories to determine the concentration of solutes in solutions. They are essential for quality control and research in the chemical industry.
- Food and Beverage: In the food and beverage industry, refractometers help measure sugar content, such as Brix in fruit juices, honey, and syrups, to ensure product quality.
- Pharmaceuticals: Refractometry is used to assess the concentration and purity of pharmaceutical compounds and active ingredients.
- Gemology: Gemologists use refractometers to identify gemstones based on their refractive indices.
- Petroleum Industry: Refractometers are used to assess the properties of petroleum products and determine their quality.
Types of Optical Refractometers:
- Abbe Refractometer: This type uses a prism and a monochromatic light source to measure the refractive index. It's often used in laboratory settings.
- Digital Refractometer: These modern refractometers provide digital readouts of the refractive index and are commonly used for quick and accurate measurements in various industries.
- Handheld Refractometer: These portable devices are suitable for field measurements and are often used for checking the sugar content in fruits and vegetables.
Calibration: Regular calibration is essential to ensure the accuracy of optical refractometers. Calibration is typically performed using standard solutions with known refractive indices.
Limitations: Optical refractometers may have limitations when dealing with substances that are highly colored or opaque, as they rely on the transmission of light. In such cases, alternative methods or instruments may be necessary.
In summary, optical refractometers are valuable instruments used in a wide range of industries to measure the refractive index of substances. They play a crucial role in quality control, research, and product development by providing information about the composition and concentration of various materials.

User questions & answers
Question: | My refractometer is impossible to calibrate... anybody else have issues or tips |
Answer: | I used distilled water and put three drops on the prism. Close it so there is no air bubbles and right under the light it should have a blue tint to it. Just lining the Blue tint line to the 0 line. |
Question: | does it measure brix for grape to know if it is ready to harvest for wine |
Answer: | Yes it does. I've tested boxes of (Zinfandel) grapes from California in September that I use for wine-making and they've been in the neighborhood of 23-25 brix. I'm sure you can read about higher brix levels but that's about what I get for those grapes and this device. All you do is squeeze a drop or two onto the sloped lens, close the clear cover over so it smears, hold it up to the light and read the scale. You can try several grapes or crush a number of them together to get an average. |
Question: | can I use this for melases ? and how to use |
Answer: | I am assuming the by melases you mean molasses. I have not tried to measure the specific gravity (SG) of molasses but I suspect you will have trouble with pure molasses. The SG might be out of range and the dark color of molasses may make it hard to read. If the molasses is dissolved in water then yes you should be able to use the reflectometer. To use a refractometer first zero the refractometer using plan water close to the same temperature as what you are measuring. SG is dependent on temperature. Once zeroed dry the surface and put a couple of drops of what you want to measure on the refractometer and read the results. The refractometer is easier to read in bright light: sunlight or a flashlight. |
Question: | Can i use this to test the sugar content of my homegrown fruits and vegetables |
Answer: | Yes, you can. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can this be used to measure the alcohol content of homemade hand sanitizer |
Answer: | Yes, this tool just measured the Specific Gravity/Brix of a liquid. If you know what the beginning SG/Brix was , and then measure the "after fermentation" SG/Brix , you can figure out what the Alcohol content is in a liquid. It will not just tell you what the Alcohol Percentage is in a wine though. You will have to know the two values and do the math |
Question: | Will this measure alcohol content of finished beer? I'm making an "NA" and want to be sure that it's truly non-alcoholic...or at least less than |
Answer: | As i know, this device measures the sugar content of a clear and nonalcoholic solution. It doesn't measures the alcohol content, but the alcohol potential (after fermentation) of a water and sugar solution. |
Question: | Can I use this to check the dilution of isopropyl alcohol to make sure it’s at |
Answer: | The liquid measurement is very easy. Place a few drops of the liquid on the optical part of the refractometer, cover the prism (the liquid will spread more easily over the prism), look throught the eyepiece against the light (focus, if necessary) and you will be able to read the result value on the scale. |

1×Beer Brix refractometer
1× Calibration screw
1xCleaning Cloth
3x 3ml droppers
1×User’s manual
Kind Reminder:
1.If the refractor is being used for the first time or has not been used for a month or more,
calibrate it to 0 with distilled water.
2.Calculation Formula: Brix=sugar / (water + sugar) Eg. Add 20 grams of
sugar into 100 grams of water,so brix in this case is 20/(100+20) = 16.6%
- DUAL SCALE MEASURE BRIX AND SG AT THE SAME TIME:With the dual scale display, you can simultaneously measure the Brix (0-32%) and Specific Gravity (1.000-1.130) under the accuracy of (Brix Accuracy: +/-0.2% Brix Accuracy: +/-0.2%).No need to switch unit for readings!
- ACCURATE READINGS WITH ATC:Handheld Brewing Refractometerr with Automatic Temperature Compensation(ATC),no more worry about the temperature change will influence the reading accuracy.the brix refractometer will account for changes in ambient temperature and automatically compensate accordingly to provides accurate and repeatable measurements.
- NO WASTE EASY TO USE:Only takes about 2 drops of brews to get your SG and brix readings.Designed for simple use,No look up table, only 2 steps ,2 drops and even 1 glances to know what your SG/BRIX is!
- AIRCRAFT ALUMIUM BODY MATERIAL:The beer wort refractometer is made of non-staining, non-corrosive and non-reactive aluminum which is lightweight to carry,anti-scratch and durable.
- NOTE:Refractometers can't accurately measure the SG of fermented wort without more info. You can however use the before and after reading of the brix along with several online calculators to compute the correct reading. -3 DROPPERS BONUS:In consideration of some customers feedback say 1 dropper is not enough for frequent uses,we have packed 3 droppers for you.Every piece of our products is strictly inspected before sale.If you have any question please don’t hesitate to contact us.
User questions & answers
Question: | Do batteries needed |
Answer: | Hello,No batteries needed for this refractometer,it's portable when you go out. It's a tool designed based on the function of refraction. |
Question: | Is this a regular refractometer I can use for other purposes or somehow specific for honey |
Answer: | Hi,yes, absolutely for different purpose use. This honey refractometer is 3 in 1 use, scale displays (brix,Baume, water content) .You can use it in many applications, bee supplies purpose is the most often used application, you can use it to test Olive-oil, homebrew and making maple syrup and many other cases. |
Question: | How often do you re-calibrate, and when would you know if it needs to be re-calibrated |
Answer: | We advise 3 month or more.you don't have to calibrate it frequently. This refractometer is equipped with ATC automatic temperature compensation system, once calibrated, the change of working temperature within +/-30℃ wouldn't effect the accuracy of reading result.you can calibrate it more if you want to make sure the best accuracy. And the calibration is not complicated at all. Just need a few drops of distilled water and adjust the result to "0", you'll finish the calibration in minutes by following the instruction |
Question: | Is the eyepiece adjustable to allow you to focus on the values you're looking at |
Answer: | Yes, it screws in and out to adjust the focus. |
