12 best pool salt meters
A pool salt meter, also known as a salinity meter or a salt tester, is an instrument used to measure the concentration of salt in swimming pool water or other aqueous solutions. These devices are commonly used in the maintenance of saltwater pools to ensure that the salt levels are within the recommended range for optimal water quality and comfort. Here's what you should know about pool salt meters:
Principle of Operation: Pool salt meters work based on the principle of conductivity. They measure the electrical conductivity of the water, which is directly related to the concentration of dissolved salts. Saltwater is a better conductor of electricity than fresh water, so as the salt concentration increases, the electrical conductivity of the water also increases.
Measurement Range: Pool salt meters typically have a specific measurement range, often expressed in parts per million (ppm) or as a percentage. The range is designed to cover the typical salt levels found in swimming pools.
Probe or Sensor: These meters feature a probe or sensor that is immersed in the pool water to measure the conductivity. The probe is sensitive to changes in salt concentration and generates a corresponding electrical signal.
Digital Readout: Most modern pool salt meters provide a digital readout of the salt concentration on an LCD screen. This readout can be in ppm or as a percentage of salinity.
Calibration: Pool salt meters may require periodic calibration to ensure accurate measurements. Calibration involves using a standard solution with a known salt concentration to adjust the meter's readings.
Temperature Compensation: Some advanced models include temperature compensation to account for variations in water temperature, which can affect the accuracy of the measurements.
Maintenance: Routine maintenance may involve cleaning the probe and storing the meter properly to prevent damage or contamination.
Usage: Pool owners and operators use salt meters to monitor salt levels in their pools. Maintaining the correct salt concentration is essential for the proper operation of saltwater pool systems, including salt chlorine generators.
Benefits: Using a pool salt meter helps prevent issues such as corrosion of pool equipment, poor water quality, and discomfort for swimmers that can result from excessively high or low salt levels.
Safety: Saltwater pools are often preferred for their comfort, but maintaining the correct salt levels is crucial for the safety and well-being of swimmers.
In summary, pool salt meters are essential tools for those responsible for maintaining saltwater pools. They provide a quick and accurate way to monitor and adjust salt levels to ensure a safe and enjoyable swimming experience while preserving the pool equipment.

User questions & answers
Question: | Does not read salt in pool accurately |
Answer: | I think it does. It makes be a few points off, not sure, but our salt reader went out on our pool and was going to cost a boatload of money. Our pool guy recommended getting a meter. Since I keep our salt in a range of 2900-3400ppm I am not too concerned if it is perfect so I haven’t tested it. I am pleased with this. Serves me well. |
Question: | How do you change from C to F |
Answer: | Push the TEMP again, but it will only work for the new 2017 model, the 2016 or earlier models only display in C. |
Question: | Is this tds meter appropriate to measure salt levels in my koi pond |
Answer: | I use it for my salt water swimming pool. Works fine. |
Question: | i have a pool company will this work to test salt pools |
Answer: | Yes, this is for testing salt level in salt water pool. This meter is not waterproof, so please do not let it drop into pool.If you need waterproof one, please search for SALT-3050 meter. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can you put this is soil |
Answer: | Sample water is collected in a plastic cup. The tester is placed on the cup (both are part of the kit). A short probe dips into the water to measure salt, TDS, temperature. NOTE. This product does not measure oxygen in the water. |
Question: | Can this meter display a negative (-) reading, which would be expected for alkaline water |
Answer: | I haven't actually measured to be certain, but I'm guessing that it's the container that is 9.5 in. deep. With the lid on it's 10" tall. They hold quite a lot. I have one that was about a third full and just emptied a near full Family Size raisin bran in it and it fits. Shook it down a bit, but it's all in there. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can it be used for fishing |
Answer: | This is a simple but very reliable tester that measures the Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) in water. It gives a reading in parts per million (ppm) of all the dissolved solids, good or bad. ... The number you see is the TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) of the water expressed in PPM (parts per ...Water! |
Question: | Is this tester water proof or water resistant |
Answer: | This is a parts per million meter. It goes from zero to some number. It measures the concentration of particulates in the water. PH meters measure acidity and alkalinity. Numbers below 7 are acid, above 7 is alkaline |
Question: | Instructions for calibrating seem confusing for home use RO water? Is there aproduct already calibrated & reliable & not hundreds |
Answer: | what did the tap water tds read? what did the fridge filtered water tds read? what did the water drop filter tds? If you cannot get a sample of reverse osmosis water to test (it should read about 40 tds or less), get some distilled water from a pharmacy to test. This will give you a baseline. I would not expect any of the drip style or cartridge style refrigerator filters will do much to remove hardness as they tend to rely on activated carbon which is better at removing chlorine (among other chemicals) and organic compounds. |
Question: | How often do you need to re-calibrate? Is there a shelf life for the calibration liquid? Is there an alternative calibration product |
Answer: | You cant. It works perfectly fine it's the tap water levels. Try testing your bottled water. See if it doesnt do that. If so send it back for a newer one. |

Question: | What makes this tester better than the others that can be bought at a fraction of the cost |
Answer: | It is inside the product packaging. |
Question: | Have you found it durable and reliable |
Answer: | the reading comes up as 3.10 and I put it on my paperwork or the customers note as 3100... so it is just a matter of moving the decimal to get the ppm readings |
Question: | Does this come with a case, test cup, and calibration fluid |
Answer: | The Oakton EcoTestr CTS Pocket Conductivity, Salinity, and TDS Meter can be changed to Fahrenheit, please see the directions below: 1. Press menu button to enter the Setup Menu and ‘PArA’ will appear. 2. Press menu button to toggle from ‘PArA’ to ‘dEg’. 3. Press return button and ‘dEg C’ will appear for selection. 4. Press menu button to toggle between ‘dEg C’ & ‘dEg F’ for selection. 5. Press return button to accept & display showing ‘donE’ to confirm the new selection & return to ‘dEg’. 6. To exit from Setup Menu back to Measurement Mode, press cal/esc button to escape. |
Question: | Does this rest ph as well |
Answer: | Yes it will, but you will want to make sure your sample is a liquid solution by adding deionized water. It will not be able to take a proper reading in a completely dry soil sample. |
