It is recommended that you purchase the R8090 calibrator in addition to the sound level meter to perform the calibration. Answer: | I'm not sure regarding the application you mention, but I have tested this device in dim light, and with CFL light bulbs that emit small amounts of UV, and it does register. With weak or moderate levels of daytime light, there is attenuation with distance from the source. So, it will detect weak levels of UV light if held a 3-4 cm away from the CFL bulb, but then 10 o 20 cm away, nothing. It has two scales, one in microwatts and the other in miniwatts. It will detect low-levels of UV light under a black umbrella on a dark rainy day. As for chemical sources of flourescence, I'm not sure. |

The instructions contain a guideline on what length of sun exposure you could afford and what type of protection you would require at the different UV index values. But our guidance is general and cannot be specific to you, because people are different and are affected differently by the same UV Index. Our guideline is not approved by FDA, EPA, or by doctors, and you would need to use your own judgement. You will create your own criteria once you start using the UV Detector daily. You will become familiar with the different UV Index values on different days and times of the day, and associate them with your experience of exposure on those days and times, so that the next time you measure the same UV Index you know how to behave. Your own criteria may coincide with our guidance or may differ. Answer: | It is correct to think that, but not for the reason I think you think so. Please let me explain. The UVC emissions at 185nm are absorbed 100% by oxygen in the air, hence this is the ozone producing part of the electromagnetic spectrum. In low-pressure mercury-vapor lamps, there are spectrum lines present at 184 nm and 254 nm. Special fused silica glass is used in the manufacturing to keep the 184 nm light from being absorbed for maximum ozone production. When you see UVC mercury-vapor lamps sold as non-ozone producing, that only means they changed the glass tube so these very short UVC wavelengths are absorbed in the glass tube itself. However, in the case that this 185nm wavelength can escape the glass tube, the 185nm wavelength can’t escape air molecules that undergo ionic changes while creating ozone to effectively block all the 185nm wavelength to within the distance of air molecules that surround the bulb. Testing of these wavelengths requires a vacuum otherwise the best way to pick up a bulb emitting 180-185 nm is to measure the ozone in the air! Always remember that your nose is the best ozone meter ever made, and if you can smell it, ozone P.P.M is too high to safely be in the room. Over the long run, your lungs can suffer from oxidative damage. Using this 180-185 nm spectrum in the disinfection process does require additional safeguards, like understanding the half-life of ozone at different humidity levels! Answer: | Please don’t leave the QuantaDose test card exposed to a UV source for 5 minutes. The QuantaDose UVC test card is designed for rapid intensity testing (15-second result), prolonged exposure will cause photodegradation effects to photochromic analyte. There are three main types of UVC test cards on the market today. With the three of them come three very important and very distinctive differences between these UVC measurement cards. Measurements of these three aspects of UVC radiation include its intensity, accumulative dose, and optimal UVC wavelength which are all critical detection factors of knowledge that will aid in the best UVC disinfection process. 1) UVC dosage test card Function: Measures Accumulative Dose (one time use) Very effective, and expensive for single use. Time isn’t the factor in intensity, overtime is dosage, not intensity. After the 15-second intensity test, providing you have reached at least 300 µW/cm² you can now calculate the dosage over time with a little math at distances closer and farther from the source just as you would be able to do with a UVC meter. If you are not getting a color change displaying the word ULTRAVIOLET in the lower section of the Quantadose test card while the UV-C indicator is green within 15 seconds, the UVC light is likely not reaching the desired level of germicidal intensity required to achieve disinfection in under ten minutes and should be investigated, for either being aged UVC mercury bulbs or an inadequate or fake UVC product altogether. Their output can also degrade with use over time. This meter can measure the actual level of 254nm sterilizing UV radiation the device you wish to test is delivering. You can use it to help determine whether a given UVC sterilization solution is strong enough to be effective at given distances/exposure times to various surfaces. |

Answer: | Jeff, It doesn't. It measures the total flux within its bandwidth and assumes a solar spectrum giving a result in UV Index. If you want separate UVA and UVB, the Solarmeter website recommends two meters (instead of one): the model 5.0 which measures both UVA and UVB giving an actual power measurement (not an index) and the Model 6.0 which gives a power reading for UVB ONLY. Subtracting the UVB reading from the total (UVA+UVB) gives the net UVA value. These meters are for high intensity (outdoor) use. If you are looking to measure artificial lights, the website recommends the Model 5.7 and Model 6.2 meters (high sensitivity version of the 5.0 and 6.0 meters). Answer: | Finn, you have a couple of possibilities: The Model 6.5 UV index meter is the easiest to use and will give you the current actual UV index at the beach, but you could put it directly under the umbrella (up close) to see what the umbrella is passing (the application you mention). Keep in mind UV comes not only directly from the sun, but also from diffracted skylight. If you put up the umbrella at normal height, then take a reading just above the sand, you will get a reading somewhere between normal whole-sky measurement (normal meter use) and the measurement directly under the umbrella. The advantage is the reading is in simple UV index - just like the weatherman gives. The other possibility is the the model 5.7 sensitive total UV meter. It looks at the same things as the 6.5, but with higher sensitivity. I would recommend this one for extreme comparisons. It may well overload in whole-sky or direct sun measurements, but will read in lower UV level ranges. Where the 6.5 may give a reading of 0 (zero) index directly under the umbrella - essentially out of range - some is getting through but to little to measure, the 5.7 will still read. Downsides: can overload in direct sun or whole-sky measurements, readings are NOT in UV index but in μW/cm² (English: microwatts per square centimeter). If you can deal with the units conversion (not a trivial exercise) you can convert it (manually - take a computer along), it could work. Overall, the 6.5 is easiest to use in the application you mention such as for a purchasing decision. The results are more general. If you are going to be making side-by-side umbrella comparisons for publication, advertising, or scientific comparisons, the the 5.7 might make more sense. I just caught a caveat - "different types of UV".. that will get expensive. The 6.5 and 5.7 both measure combined UVA and UVB. For skin exposure to sunlight, these are the choices. If you are looking to differentiate UVA, UVB and total UVA+B that will require multiple meters. If that is really what you are looking for, that is beyond anything of a short answer. I had to Macguyver a setup so I wasn't in the room with the UVC lights but it definitely detected the UVC (assuming it does read only the wavelengths it says it does). Honestly if you have eye protection and cover your skin, you'll be ok. It works very quickly so you do not need to be exposed for long. |

Operating
Press the ON/OFF button to turn on or turn off the UVC meter. Aim sensor window in the top panel of meter directly at UV source. Note reading on LCD and record if desired. For reptile lamps also check at the "basking" position.
Battery
The battery operation voltage is 3V down to 2.5V. Below 2.5V the LCD numbers will begin to dim, indicating the need for battery replacement. Under the "typical" service load, the battery should last about 1 year.
Operation
1. Allow lamps to warm-up prior to taking readings (at least 5 min).
2. When checking the aging of lamps, keep measuring distance and locations constant.
3. Lamps should be replaced when output drops 30% to about 70% of their original (new) readings. Take an overall reading at exposure distance, or check individual lamps close to the surface. Keep track of hours vs. readings on a chart.
4. If unsure of what original new values were, replace lamp(s) with new ones of the same kind and compare it to old ones.
