13 best rf meters
RF meters, also known as radiofrequency meters or EMF (Electromagnetic Field) meters, are devices used for measuring and monitoring electromagnetic radiation in the radiofrequency (RF) spectrum. These meters are essential tools in various industries, including electrical testing, industrial, scientific, and telecommunications. Here's what you should know about RF meters:
Purpose: RF meters are primarily used to measure and assess the levels of electromagnetic radiation emitted by electronic devices, wireless communication equipment, power lines, and other RF sources. They help ensure compliance with safety standards and regulations.
EMF Safety: One of the main applications of RF meters is to evaluate EMF exposure levels to ensure that they are within acceptable safety limits. Excessive exposure to RF radiation can potentially have health risks, so monitoring and limiting exposure is crucial.
Types: RF meters come in various types, including handheld meters, portable meters, and fixed-installation meters.Handheld and portable meters are convenient for on-the-spot measurements, while fixed meters are used for continuous monitoring in specific locations.
Frequency Range: RF meters are designed to measure RF radiation across a specific frequency range, typically from a few kilohertz (kHz) to several gigahertz (GHz). The range depends on the specific meter model and its intended use.
Measurement Units: RF meters measure electromagnetic radiation in units such as volts per meter (V/m), milliwatts per square meter (mW/m²), or decibels (dB). These units help quantify the strength and intensity of the RF fields.
Antennas: RF meters are equipped with antennas that capture RF signals. The type of antenna used can affect the meter's sensitivity and the accuracy of measurements.
Applications: RF meters find applications in various industries and settings, including telecommunications, manufacturing, healthcare (for assessing medical equipment), and environmental monitoring (for assessing RF pollution).
Safety Regulations: Many countries have established safety regulations and exposure limits for RF radiation. RF meters help individuals and organizations ensure compliance with these regulations and take appropriate measures if radiation levels exceed safe thresholds.
Data Logging: Some advanced RF meters feature data logging capabilities, allowing users to record and analyze RF exposure levels over time. This is especially useful for long-term monitoring and research purposes.
Calibration: Regular calibration of RF meters is essential to maintain accuracy. Calibration ensures that the meter provides reliable measurements and remains in compliance with industry standards.
User Training: Proper training is essential for individuals who operate RF meters to ensure accurate and meaningful measurements and to understand the significance of the data obtained.

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this work in India/ Europe |
Answer: | Yes, this meter will work anywhere in the world. This one version will measure both 50 and 60Hz power regions. |
Question: | Will this pick up UHF and microwave |
Answer: | Thank you for your question. This meter will detect all three types of electromagnetic pollution.; AC magnetic, AC Electric and RF/Microwave. |
Question: | Does this pick up emf/rf at a distance, or do you have to hold it right next to the source |
Answer: | This meter will pick up EMF/RF at any distance, as long as the field is strong enough. |
Question: | Does this read digital RF from cellphone towers, wifi, wireless LAN, etc |
Answer: | The TF2 RF section is great for measuring the EMF emissions of cellphone towers, Wi-Fi and mobile phones. When reading RF emitted by digital devices, such as mobile phones, Wi-Fi routers and smart meters, the Peak Measurement (small numerals in the upper-left of the display) is of more interest than the Field Measurement (large numerals at the bottom). The information from digital RF devices is transmitted in brief packets that occur irregularly (perhaps once per minute with smart meters and several times per second with Wi-Fi transmitters or mobile phones that are in use). The Peak Measurement detects these packets and displays the strongest packet for several seconds before resetting itself. |

User questions & answers
Question: | All i want to know if this detector gq emp-390 will detect 5ghz wifi signal and 5g cell phone |
Answer: | Yes it will detect 5GHz signal but not in all modes of operation. If it is the predominant source then the general Radio Frequency RF mode reading will reflect it. If it is a source mixed with others than all sources will be reported together as one value (sum/average over time...unknown. most likely average). It will not detect it in spectrum analyzer, by frequency, and show it's individual power level. Spectrum analyzer will detect 2.4GHz wifi. 5GHz is out of range of spectrum analyzer as is everything greater than 2.5GHz. It might detect presence of 5GHz data packet bytes in digital mode but I don't know for sure, have not tested this. |
Question: | Can it tell you how much emf your cell phone emits |
Answer: | yes it does, in 3 scales. some readings read a voltage per meter and another is electro-magnetic reading, I searched through alot and after receiving this I found it to be the best affordable technology in its class, and it even automatically identifies the difference between cell phone and power line EMF in digital readable format. |
Question: | Will this device analyze a 5 gig wifi signal like it does a 2.4 or |
Answer: | Yes, it does analyze 5 Ghz frequencies. If you are asking whether it will analyze 5G as in 5th generation Millimeter Waves, the answer is NO.. 5th Generation 5G will use frequencies between 30Ghz and 300Ghz... You can get one that costs about $40,000... As in, they are not available to the public . |
Question: | Is the 5g wifi signal the same as the new 5g cell phone signal? will it measure the new 5g phones? it is confusing: it says: "rf up to 10 ghz |
Answer: | The 5G wifi is referring to 5Ghz Wifi, and it is covered by this meter RF band. The 5G cell phone network is referring to 5th Generation cell phone network, it is nothing to do with 5GHz, basically its base band is much higher than 5Ghz |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can it be plugged in to external power |
Answer: | No, this EFM Meter can not be plugged into an outer power source. |
Question: | I'm a person with ehs, i want to know if this meter might be good to read the radiation from cellphones, high tension lines, cell phone towers, 5g? ty |
Answer: | Honestly, you probably could read the output of them in Milligauss or Microtesla but you would have to get pretty uncomfortably close. For reading radiation of those things and not endangering yourself I imagine you would need a pretty powerful EMF Meter. After doing some quick research on this, you would need something along the lines EMF Detector with the detectable range of something like 10 Hz to 10-12 GHz. For radiation coming from Cell towers you will be in the 50-10,000 MHz Radiation from high tension lines you will be looking at under 5 MHz by a great deal |
Question: | Can it detect the variables in earth's magnetic field |
Answer: | Thinking logically about it you would think yes because weather it be earth's magnetic field or a magnetic field from say inside your house from an appliance they would both be detected. But that is just my thoughts about it so you would need an answer really from the manufacturer. |
Question: | Can this device detect radiation from nuclear fallout |
Answer: | no |

User questions & answers
Question: | Why are reading alot higher when held in my hand versus setting on table (ball not touching anything)? also why read higher on Y axis |
Answer: | Hello, The reason for higher reading might be that your body serves as an antenna or a reflector of the signal back to the meter. Please ensure that your cell phone turned off when you do the measurements. |
Question: | Will this meter measure the frequency from a high voltage power line running in front of our land? Need to know how far to build for it to be safe |
Answer: | Hello, The HF-B3G won't measure low frequency EMF. In order to do so we recommend you using the MG-300 or the MG-2000T. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01CGVBP5O https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01HQBRZ9O |
Question: | Does this emit any kind of rf itself? i am highly sensitive to wi-fi radiation. it effects my heart condition. so can't have anything that emits it |
Answer: | Hello,The RF Meter is only measure the RF signals. It does not emits RF. |
Question: | What kind of battery does this use? Is it internal and rechargeable or do you place the batteries inside and if so, what size / type battery? Thanks |
Answer: | I am sorry for the delay in my answer. This device uses regular 9v battery (comes with it). You can use any rechargeable 9v battery. But, before you buy this device, I need to let you know that I find it to be no so accurate. The numbers keep jumping up and down, in high values, making the device useless. It has a way to lock on the max value, but does not show the real time number. I am going to send the supplier an email asking them if this is expected. I used to have an analog one, and it showed some small/ minute variation in readings, but still manageable. I bought this digital device, because I thought I can get a better, accurate reading. This might be more detail than expected, but hope it is useful. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What's the difference between this and $300+ rf meters? my 13yo son is doing a science fair project on cell phone radiation. thanks |
Answer: | This EMF meter measures 60 Hz (up to 300 Hz) frequencies. That's basically power line type electro-MAGNETIC radiation. The cell phone radiation is RADIO frequency radiation in the Mega or Giga-Hz range. So, this meter will not work for his project. |
Question: | Can this be used to detect electrical radiation from electrical boxes on the side of the apartment building where we are living? we are concerned that there might be a lot of electrical toxicity coming from that into our unit |
Answer: | Yes, but it only detects EMFs. There is no such thing as electrical toxicity, but there is ionizing radiation, from high voltage electrical fields, or high strength magnetic fields, hence electromagnetic field. Just look up the current data for recommended levels of exposure, then set the meter for that level. Then examine the areas you occupy for the length of time required for exposure limits. If you exceed the limits, replaced the device causing the problem, or relocate the occupied area for less total time. Another comment talks of all the different devices. I can tell you right now, every single AC device produces EMF. All of them. It's not about whether you are exposed, it about how much, and for how long. The alarm clock thing has been known for over 40 years. Just like CFLs if used within less than 15in is cancerous. |
Question: | Can it be used to detect ghosts |
Answer: | This will not detect ghosts, even if you believe it will. This detects electro magnetic fields. So unless you believe ghosts are produced every second by electricity, the Earth is surrounded by a ghost, and everyone's phone houses ghosts, this will not help you. |
Question: | Has anyone had a professional come and collaborate your reading from this meter |
Answer: | Yes. I tested it with calibrated equipment. It reads 0.0 milligauss up to 1.6 milligauss of ambient magnetic field. In other words, you might think there's no field when the meter reads zero, even though there could be as much as 1.6 mG present. At higher fields, it actually reads 2.5x too HIGH (reads 250 in a 100 mG field for example)). WAY inaccurate. Also the confused "English" manual claims it also reads "electric" field. It doesn't. And it doesn't read RF, microwaves, cell towers, etc. either. However, the meter is poorly shielded, so when placed near a leaky microwave oven, the meter circuit is interfered with, and it sometimes reads something, although the number is meaningless. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this work for measuring levels from a smart meter (electrical company meter attached to your house |
Answer: | I would assume that yes, it should work, but cannot verify since I am lucky not to have a smart meter. This meter only tells you in general terms what the level of radiation in terms of when a person with EHS might experience symptoms. If you want a precise measurement, you're best off ordering a different type of meter. Best of luck finding a more precise answer! |
Question: | Bought one one and half months ago. Now the button seems to malfunction. Doesn't switch among the modes and cannot turn off. How to fix |
Answer: | It is an excellent, accurate and sensitive RF meter, more of a portable, simple "detector" actually. And volts per meter is a common measurement for RF radiation. On this meter however, you are not so much paying attention to the exact numbers, you are being alerted by the color of the LED lights in terms of safe, precautionary and unhealthy. This meter also has an audible sound function through which you can hear the digital signals of what you are measuring. Once you become aware of the digital signal of a wireless modem, a cordless phone or a cell tower, it becomes easy to recognize them using this meter, without even seeing where they are located. |
Question: | Can you measure smart meter radiation with an this meter |
Answer: | You can install some clamps to remedy the situation too. Give us a call and we can help 631-648-3403 |
Question: | it this is an RF meter, why would it give the mesurement in v/m? isn't that for measuring electricity |
Answer: | I used a high temperature adhesive to ensure complete adhesion. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What is a calibration certificate |
Answer: | Yes, the histogram shows the power detected in the time domain. You can watch here an example video on how it looks on the PC software (the same principle on the Mac and Android). |
Question: | How does this test 5G? I heard those meters are thousands of dollars |
Answer: | There are applications both for a PC (with Microsoft Windows) and for a Mac (with macOS). Both can be downloaded from the manufacturer's website. However, for basic measurements, no software is required. The software only gives additional advanced tools. |
Question: | Does the "histogram" provide the power spectrum |
Answer: | It is a complicated question in a sense. Yes, this meter will measure the very fast and potent pulses of radiation emitting from a smart meter. However, the way smart meters emit radiation with very rapid pulses, you may only see the meter register a very quick blip or a few blips of the red LED light, and you would hear the blips on the audio portion of the meter. Then those fast pulses of radiation will disappear. So yes, the meter will pick them up, but smart meters do not register as a constant pulse where you can easily take a measurement on a meter like this. You would need a different meter that handles the higher capacity pulses of radiation, and one with a "peak signal hold option" on the meter. |
Question: | I have a mac without microsoft. do i need microsoft for this product |
Answer: | I'd return it. I've had mine for years and it works fine. If you can return it you may be able to take it apart and replace the button piece. |
Product description
The AM11 Acoustimeter is our most powerful radiofrequency (RF) / microwave detector. It measures both peak and average signals using a combination of LEDs and number readings on an bright text screen. The AM11 detects almost all modern wireless technology, including mobile phones, cordless phones, smart meters and Wifi. The instrument is suitable for those with severe electrosensitivity as it is sensitive down to 0.02 V/m. It also has an audio output that helps determine the source of the exposure. The Acoustimeter will help you quickly understand your RF environment. It accurately measures all incoming radiation from 200 MHz to 8000 MHz (8 GHz), and was designed using many years of real life measurement experience. The readings are shown on both an clear “OLED” text display and two sets of LED lights. The LEDs update rapidly, helping you to find hot-spots. The text display offers high accuracy with a lower update speed, giving you time to take note of the readings. You can easily determine what kind of device is causing your exposure using the internal speaker. Sound samples are available to help you identify what kind of signal your Acoustimeter is measuring. The sounds made by different devices change with time, so these are a rough guide only. If there are a number of sources of exposure, the sounds may mix and be harder to recognize. If you can hear a very quiet “hissing” noise when no LEDs are lit, this is normal. This is from the internal workings of the Acoustimeter, and is therefore of no concern.
- WIDEST MEASUREMENT RANGE: 200-8,000 MHz ±6 dB covers the spectrum from TETRA beyond the 5.6 GHz WiFi and WiMax frequencies, and is sensitive down to 0.02 V/m, making it a suitable instrument for those with severe electro-sensitivity.
- DETECT EXPOSURE TO ALMOST ALL MODERN WIRELESS TECHNOLOGY: The AM11 is EMFields' most powerful radiofrequency (RF) / microwave detector, now suitable for 5G measurements. AM 11 detects almost all modern wireless technology, including mobile phones, cordless phones, smart meters and Wifi. Very fast response time with measurements taken thousands of times per second.
- INTERNAL SPEAKER TRANSLATES EMF INTO AUDIO SIGNALS: You can easily determine what kind of device is causing your exposure using the internal speaker with adjustable volume levels. Sound samples are available on the website to help you identify what kind of signal your Acoustimeter is measuring.
- EASY TO READ DISPLAY SHOWS PEAK & AVERAGE MEASUREMENTS: LEDs update rapidly, allowing you to quickly gauge the current levels in an area and find any hot-spots, while the OLED text screen maintains the peak and average measurements in the session. Peak display range is 0.02 V/m - 6.00 V/m, average display 1 µW/m2 – 100,000 µW/m2.
- 5 YEAR WARRANTY
User questions & answers
Question: | Does this item ever get shipped, or does Amazon just hold on to it for as long as they can |
Answer: | The 5G cellular network will consist of different modules. It is evolving and currently operate at: - Around 700 MHz - around 2 GHz - around 3 to 4 GHz Those are called the 5G low and mid bands. Eventually, higher frequencies (above 20GHz) are planned to be used as well, but there are still technological difficulties using them at present, and will probably take a couple more years before implemented. The ENV RD-10 covers the currently used low and mid bands of the 5G network as part of its measuring range. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this helpful is assessing the danger of power lines near a home |
Answer: | Amazon should be shipping it once they receive payment. If there is a problem you should contact Amazon. |
Question: | Does it have any directional capability |
Answer: | Each of these meters is calibrated separately in the factory, but they don't come with a formal calibration certificate. |
- UPGRADED: Added battery circuit management, more secure. Redesigned PCB, you can connect to mobile phone with Type C-Type C cable( original PCB needs OTG cable), see a clear HD image on your phone. Designed a practical and simple control application on PC, you can download touchstone(SNP) files for radio design and simulation software. Added a case, which is protective and dust-proof.
- IMPROVED FREQUENCY ALGORITHM: The improved frequency algorithm can use the odd harmonic extension of si5351 to support the measurement frequency up to 1.5GHz. The 50K-300MHz frequency range of the si5351 direct output provides better than 70dB dynamic, The extended 300M-900MHz band provides better than 60dB of dynamics, and the 900M-1.5GHz band is better than 40dB of dynamics
- MULTIPLE FUNCTIONS: The default firmware main function is used for antenna performance measurement. The TX/RX method can measure the complete S11 and S21 parameters. If you need to obtain S12 and S22, you need to manually replace the transceiver port wiring
- STRONG AND SECURE POWER SUPPLY: This VNA is battery powered or USB powered; Built in 650mAh battery, could work for 2 hours continuously, if need extra working time, it can be connected to power bank or power source.

User questions & answers
Question: | where is this made |
Answer: | Yes it does! To invoke the menu touch the bottom right hand corner of the screen. It is preferable to use a plastic stylus to touch the screen - I use a cut down 5.5mm diameter knitting needle. The point needs to very blunt (definitely not a sharp point) and well rounded. This particular model of the nanoVNA is probably the best on the market currently! |
Question: | Can this tool be used instead of an regular antenna analyzer like a Rig Expert |
Answer: | I did not either but I did google the NanoVNA which is the same and. Saw several YouTube videos that allowed me to calibrate and use the VNA to measure SWR and actually sweep a frequency range of my choosing along with displaying the graph of my choice |
Question: | Does it have a touchscreen |
Answer: | The frequency of the Electric and Magnetic fields radiating from power lines (60Hz range) are a lot lower than the frequencies wireless devices transmit at. So no the Safe and Sound Pro II will not measure power lines. This will measure frequencies between 200MHz - 12GHz. |
Question: | Regarding, "I could not find any concise instructions. If you google the device there is a ton of info about it. ..." Can you give some that apply |
Answer: | You can determine the direction of a source with the Safe and Sound Pro II, but will not be as accurate compared to a Gigahertz Solutions RF meter that uses a Log-Per Directional antenna. |
