12 best dial micrometers
Dial micrometers are precision measuring instruments used in industrial and scientific applications for dimensional measurement. They are a type of micrometer that incorporates a dial indicator for ease of reading and improved accuracy when measuring the dimensions of various objects. Here are some key points about dial micrometers:
Measurement Range: Dial micrometers typically have a measurement range of 0 to 1 inch (0-25.4 millimeters) or greater. Some specialized models may have larger measurement ranges.
Construction: They consist of a frame, a spindle, an anvil, and a thimble. The spindle and anvil are used to capture the object being measured, and the thimble is rotated to make precise measurements.
Dial Indicator: The dial indicator is an integral part of a dial micrometer. It consists of a graduated dial, often with divisions of 0.001 inch (0.025 millimeters) or smaller, and a needle or pointer that moves as the spindle is rotated.
Accuracy: Dial micrometers are known for their high accuracy, typically capable of measuring to within a thousandth of an inch or a hundredth of a millimeter, depending on the model.
Usage: They are commonly used for measuring the dimensions of small parts, such as machine components, in manufacturing and quality control processes. They are also used in scientific research and engineering applications.
Zero Setting: Before taking a measurement, the dial micrometer is often zeroed to ensure accurate readings. This is done by ensuring that the needle aligns with zero on the dial when no pressure is applied to the spindle.
Resolution: The resolution of a dial micrometer is determined by the number of divisions on the dial. The smaller the divisions, the finer the measurement resolution.
Maintenance: To maintain accuracy, dial micrometers require regular calibration and proper handling. They should be stored in a protective case and kept clean to prevent contamination.
Variations: There are various types of dial micrometers, including outside micrometers for measuring external dimensions, inside micrometers for internal measurements, and depth micrometers for measuring depths.
Advantages: Dial micrometers offer advantages over simpler measuring tools like calipers due to their higher precision and ease of reading, especially when measuring very small tolerances.
Digital Alternatives: In addition to traditional dial micrometers, digital micrometers have become popular in recent years. These instruments provide digital readouts for even greater ease of use and precision.
In summary, dial micrometers are essential tools for precision measurement in various industrial and scientific applications. They provide accurate and repeatable measurements and are widely used in quality control, manufacturing, and research settings. Proper calibration and maintenance are crucial to ensure their reliability and accuracy.

User questions & answers
Question: | Should the caliper come pointing at 0? If not, how do i calibrate |
Answer: | Set it to 0 before measurement |
Question: | Is this coolant resistant |
Answer: | I can't imagine that it would NOT be resistant to any automotive coolant. It might not hurt to rinse it off with plain water, if you expose it to one of the typical coolants. Doesn't that stuff get a little gummy when it dries? |
Question: | is this metric or SAE scale |
Answer: | Sae in 100th graduations |
Question: | what is the diameter of the dial |
Answer: | The dial outside diameter is about 1.5 inches. |

User questions & answers
Question: | does your caliper say "shock proof" in the dial? I just got mine, and and it does not say shock proof anywhere on it |
Answer: | I bought the caliper when we were at our home in Tampa FL and left it there so I can't look at the dial, but I do not remember it saying shockproof.I am satisfied with the operation and accuracy of the instrument. Do you mean electrically shockproof? It is metal and surely if exposed to a wire with voltage on it you could be shocked. If you are worried about the utility of the tool in a rough physical environment I would say it is fairly shockproof that way. Does the product description say it is "shockproof". And even if so it would not necessarily have to have that written or stamped on the instrument. |
Question: | Country of Manufacture? Think Amazon would get the clue to put this info on the product description |
Answer: | Really? That isn't even necessary any more. There is very little doubt that it's made "in Asia" (the actual country being both immaterial and ambiguous) just like everything else in your life is made "in Asia" because people in North America and Europe are too greedy to work for small paychecks. Even those very rare things that are final-assembled in North America are built entirely of parts made somewhere in Asia, from Asian raw materials.. |
Question: | is anyone able to shed some light on what this tool's resolution might be? nothing is listed on this page by the manufacturer |
Answer: | The scale is in 0.001 inches or 0.02 mm, so you should be able to read anything to the nearest thousandth of an inch or 2 hundredth of a millimeter. |
Question: | Are these accurate and durable? How's the quality of construction |
Answer: | An excellent buy for the money and well built. And yes they are accurate. Like any precision tool, they need to be handled carefully and kept clean. I've had mine for several months and having 40 plus years experience in machine shop, would recommend them. Are they as precision as a high end Mitotoyo? Probably not, but they don't cost $200 plus. So and excellent buy for the money. |

User questions & answers
Question: | what is the thread size of the indicator tip |
Answer: | This tool is 0 - 1 inch capacity. Crankshaft journals are much larger unless you are referring to lawnmower or similar small engines. I have seen good accuracy and repeatability with the one I bought. The ball is used to measure surfaces with a concave curve such as the inside wall of a piece of tubing or cylindrical shape. |

User questions & answers
Question: | I don't see a clamp or mounting for the indicator, how will it mount on this holder |
Answer: | The ACDC-100 is a meter that can make measurements directly. This is not intended as an accessory to connect to the 87. I suggest maybe looking into the i410 or i1010 current clamps for DC measurements. |
Question: | I paid 54.99 on this item that I just got on today but now it is 36.99. Why is this |
Answer: | It will read 1/4 of an amp easily before the tolerance becomes somewhat skewed. 3-5 amps won't be any trouble at all. Just make sure that you adjust to the proper range setting of your expected ampacity. |
Question: | What is the diameter of the rod mounted to the base |
Answer: | Yes we offer the Manual in Spanish |

User questions & answers
Question: | The System of Measurement listed above is metric. Isn't this model and English or inches model |
Answer: | The details and description on this page indicates inches in both measuring range (0-6") and on the dial unit of measure indicated in the upper center of the dial (.001"). Both using the " symbol abbreviation for inches. I JUST ordered one of these and certainly hope it is not metric when it arrives. js |
Question: | Is this American Made |
Answer: | It says on their website that the only calipers made by Starrett are the 120 series. Everybody says it's disappointing, but why do you think they are so cheap? The 120's are like $200 |
