Answer: | The shaft is approximately 7" long. You won't be able to measuere cam bearings from the fron and it will probably be too long to measure them between the webs of the block. I reccomend a standard internal mike or one that is extended. now for the cylinders, this works every bit as good as the big $$$ ones. Hope that helpls. |

Zeroing:
Clean the surface of measuring anvil heads with a soft cloth, then rotate measuring device to make two measuring surface contact. If two zero lines of differential sleeve and fixed barrel do not alignment, use the following two methods to adjust.
Method I, if the error is less than 0.02mm (0.001"), use ratchet stop to lock screw tightly, then use wrench to pull fixed barrel till two zero lines alignment.
Method II, if the error is greater than 0.02mm (0.001 "),
Step1, use ratchet stop to lock screw tightly, then use wrench to loosen the ratchet stop and remove differential sleeve.
Step2, re-align zero lines of fixed barrel and differential sleeve, then put ratchet stop back on. If necessary, adjust it again using method I.
Note: There is no need to calibrate micrometer during common use. Micrometer only need calibration when it is severely worn.

Answer: | The picture and the set are correct. The 1.4 and 2.0 are inserted in their respective heads and the other slot is empty because it is an SAE set. The SAE set and metric set use the same case and the metric set has one extra extension and therfore an empty slot in the SAE set. It is a good tool but the case is very cheap. |

Answer: | I have the higher precision electronic version which is similar and have done extensive calibration in a production environment at a major employer years ago. Most bore gauges follow this approach: For the bore range (tip that you are using) you need a "master ring gage" for that range in order to "zero" the instrument. A micrometer generally does not have the precision needed to calibrate it. (You can get by a good ballpark quick and dirty, but you are introducing some serious error). Those gages you can even buy used for about $30 or less sometimes $10 on eBay. This is because when you remove and insert different sized bit you alter the tool and it needs to be calibrated. Another (more pricey approach) is to get a "master setting tool" which allows you to insert blocks. The key is a physical reference such as a ring or block in the precision grade you want instead of another tool (a major no-no). Any precision work you want to do in the future you want to have these references as part of your tool set. Otherwise there is little point to have a precision tool and no reference. |

Answer: | Fowler would not allow their products to be made badly so even though this is a budget version of their bore gauge it is made really well in China. I have used it a bit and have no complaints. If you want US made, pay the extra $$ but for occasional use this fits the bill. |
