13 best shim stock
Shim stock is a thin material used in various industrial applications, especially in fields related to metals, alloys, and manufacturing. It is commonly made from a variety of materials, including brass, stainless steel, aluminum, plastic, and other metals or alloys. The primary purpose of shim stock is to fill small gaps or spaces, provide support, or adjust clearances within machinery or components.
In the context of metals and alloys, brass shim stock is a particular type often used. Brass is a suitable material for shim stock due to its properties, including good malleability, corrosion resistance, and electrical conductivity. It is available in various thicknesses and widths, allowing for versatility in applications.
Shim stock is utilized in industrial settings to make precise adjustments, align components, or compensate for manufacturing tolerances. It can be cut or shaped to fit specific dimensions and requirements. Industries such as aerospace, automotive, manufacturing, and engineering often employ shim stock to fine-tune the positioning or alignment of components, ensuring optimal performance and accuracy.
Overall, shim stock made from materials like brass serves a critical role in industries by aiding in precision adjustments and providing solutions for achieving proper fits and clearances in mechanical and industrial applications.

User questions & answers
Question: | Do these flex, or bend |
Answer: | I have not...but the sheets are large, maybe 8 1/2 x 11 or slightly less. You would have to cut the sheet to fit into the space....rough edges, bent edges, etc. And you get a bunch of sheets you cannot use for that. I would think an auto parts store would sell something much more suitable. |
Question: | Anyone use these for valve clearance testing between the cam? 2003 toyota tacoma 2.7L |
Answer: | Sure, if the cutters are sturdy enough for the thickness. I cut mine down as needed using tin snips. |
Question: | Can the shims be cut with metal cutters to a narrower width? I'm also using these to take up clearance in a trailer hitch. Thank you |
Answer: | It goes from .001, aka about 1/4 the thickness of a typical sheet of paper, all the way to either .012/.015, aka as thick or thicker than 3 sheets of paper. That said, this material is soft (annealed) and isn't a spring, in addition, it is 1008 allow (aka .08% carbon) which is REALLY _LOW_ carbon, so it can't be hardened into a spring (Note, you may be able to case harden/nitride). In general, for a spring, you want at LEAST 55 points of carbon, aka .55%, and some spring alloys are 75+ points of carbonAKA this won't make a good spring |
Question: | is this shim stock thin enough to make small leaf type springs for firearms |
Answer: | yes |

Answer: | Brass is made with lead. |
Question: | Why does the have a cancer warning |
Answer: | The laser marking are 1/8" height and the sheet dimensions are 12" by 6". The marking are 1" from the 12" edge and has two lines approximately 6" long. |
Question: | reviews said that these are marked, is it very small writing how many inches does it cover is it visible from the other side |
Answer: | HI, Depending on the Olfa Blade, I know it can cut up to several layers but that depends on what blade you are using. A 45mm blade will cut several layers. For purchasing the same thickness, what size are you looking for? |
Question: | What thicknesses can be cut with an olfa blade? Can I just buy several sheets of one thickness |
Answer: | yes they will flex and bend. I have not seen any steel or aluminum shim stock that does not bend or flex at such thin thicknesses. in fact the reason I purchased this package was to use as shim material inside tubing. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the max temperature of this shim material |
Answer: | For the most part yes. The thicker the shim the more likely it would be to break if folded in half. |
Question: | Can this material be bent/folded shaped without breaking/tearing |
Answer: | It says High Quality Plastic Material. It doesn’t say anymore than that. I’m a tool & die maker and stay in the grinding room and use them and they work great |
Question: | Hi, does any one know what exactly the kind of this plastic shim stock is? like pvc, pp |
Answer: | I’m not using these plastic in a hot environment. The pressure from a surface grinder magnetic chuck doesn’t have enough pressure to hurt them |
Question: | What is the working temperature range? What is the compressive psi before this material fatigues |
Answer: | yes sir it can... i bought this to tighten up a 12g double and shimmed the bearing pin to move the barrels back against the back plate...i used a 1/8 drill for a mandrel so a 3/4 should be easier |

User questions & answers
Question: | What is/are the precision of the thickness of the shims |
Answer: | They are labeled |
Question: | Is it easy to determine the thickness of individual shims |
Answer: | varies from .0001 to 0.075 |
Question: | What is the thickness of the shims |
Answer: | The product is flexible plastic shim stock. The thicker the stock, the less flexible it is. I used an 8 thou piece I cut with scissors to about 1" by 1/2" and shimmed a rifle scope in the holder. The scope body is 1" in diameter. I hope this helps, it's the only application I've used shim stock for that required bending. As far as tear proof, even the thinnest pieces can't be torn with your hands, like you'd tear a piece of paper. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can you cut it with scissors |
Answer: | never put a magnet to it as I was most concerned about corrosion aspects. I would expect it to be slighlty magnetic but not nearly like carbon steel. |
Question: | Is this magnetic |
Answer: | The precision brand shims that I have bought are dead on up to .050”, and those were only only shy 0.001”. I don’t know about the bigger ones |

User questions & answers
Question: | Hi. How many pieces of brass in the package? Just one of 6” x |
Answer: | Define "sensitive" as all steel based metals inherently are magnetic in nature. Is your magnetic field static or dynamic? I have magnets that will stick to this and some that will not. |
