12 best fall prevention alarms

Fall prevention alarms are devices commonly used in healthcare settings to enhance patient safety by alerting caregivers or healthcare professionals when a patient attempts to leave their bed or chair without assistance. These alarms are designed to help prevent falls and injuries, especially among patients who are at a higher risk of falling, such as the elderly or those with mobility issues. Here are some key points about fall prevention alarms:

  1. Purpose: The primary purpose of fall prevention alarms is to notify caregivers or healthcare staff when a patient attempts to get out of bed or leave a chair unassisted. This prompt notification allows caregivers to provide timely assistance and prevent potential falls.

  2. Components: A typical fall prevention alarm system consists of several components, including a sensor pad or pressure-sensitive mat, an alarm unit, and sometimes a remote control. The sensor pad or mat is placed under the patient in bed or on a chair. When pressure is removed from the pad or mat, it triggers the alarm unit.

  3. Types of Alarms: There are various types of fall prevention alarms, including wired alarms, wireless alarms, and infrared alarms. Wired alarms connect the sensor pad to the alarm unit with a cord, while wireless alarms use radio signals for communication. Infrared alarms use motion sensors to detect movement.

  4. Alarm Sounds: Fall prevention alarms produce audible alerts, such as alarms, chimes, or beeps, to notify caregivers or healthcare staff of the patient's movement. The specific sound can often be customized to suit the facility's needs and the preferences of the caregivers.

  5. Reset and Silence: Many fall prevention alarms have reset and silence options to stop the alarm once the patient is safely assisted back into bed or the chair. This feature allows for minimal disruption to other patients.

  6. Usage: Fall prevention alarms are commonly used in hospitals, nursing homes, long-term care facilities, and home healthcare settings. They are especially useful for patients who may be disoriented, have cognitive impairments, or are at risk of wandering.

  7. Benefits: Fall prevention alarms play a crucial role in reducing the risk of patient falls, which can lead to injuries like fractures, head trauma, or complications.By providing timely assistance, these alarms help maintain patient safety.

  8. Regulations: Healthcare facilities often have guidelines and regulations in place for the use of fall prevention alarms to ensure their proper and safe utilization.

It's important to note that while fall prevention alarms are valuable tools in healthcare, they should be part of a broader fall prevention program that includes risk assessment, patient education, and appropriate interventions to address the underlying causes of falls. Proper training for caregivers and healthcare staff is also essential to ensure the effective use of these devices while respecting patients' dignity and privacy.

User questions & answers

Question: Does this product fit for person that under 120 lbs
Answer: When the mattress the pad is being used upon is a firm, innerspring mattress, this item will likely still work fine for someone under 120 pounds. However, if the mattress is not firm, or has anything "non-standard" about it, such as it is a TempurPedic, memory foam, or air mattress, or if there is some type of padding that has been added to the bed, this 10" x 30" sensor pad may not properly register the body at all times. This can cause false alarms, or majorly delayed alerts. You may want to consider a system with a 20" x 30" sensor pad instead, which is more effective under those scenarios, and can be purchased here: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00KYA53BW
Question: does this have an on/off switch? is there an AC adaptor? how long do batteries last
Answer: Rob- it did have on/off. Not sure on the AC Adapter... Batteries lasted a few weeks minimum. I don't remember there being any issue with them at all.Was happy with the product. Good luck.
Question: Does this make a sound when the patient gets in the bed
Answer: No only when they get out. When I put my mom to bed I always press on it just to make sure it will sound when she gets up.
Question: The "C" batteries power the receiving alarm unit? What powers the transmitter in the pad
Answer: The transmitter inside the pad is powered by a non-replaceable lithium battery. The battery has been engineered to last the duration of the pad's life term, which is one year. Replacement pads are available separately from this system. Note that this system should always come with a one year warrantied sensor pad, not 45 or 90 days. If you ever receive anything but a one year pad, you should immediately contact Amazon and ask to return the item, as that means the seller you bought the system from is not offering the correct product. We do not recommend re-purchasing from the same seller, as you are likely to again receive the same incorrect product.

User questions & answers

Question: Can someone with a pacemaker use this device since it has a magnetic connection
Answer: Not sure.
Question: im actually looking at this to sound an alarm when my dog pulls a couch cushion to chew on it. it seems pretty straight forward, but it’d work
Answer: To turn off the alarm you have to hold the button in for almost a minute with ours. I do apologize if you have tried that and doesn’t work
Question: Does the chair pads work too with this same device
Answer: I would say it is fairly loud, but then if you need to monitor someone who may leave a chair when they should not without assistance, you want it louder. It is not a steady sound but more of an intermittent beep. It worked very well for me as I would move it from my husband's wheelchair to his recliner.
Question: Does it have a clip on the back? I want to buy something for my dad to alert if he falls and we are not in the room
Answer: I believe the monitor/alarm has to be attached to the pad.

Answer: Probably with soap and water
Question: Can you use an AC adapter or is it only battery powered
Answer: Until you break it.
Question: I am see conflicting comments about how loud the alarm is. One report, said, "jingling bells" and others talk about the piercing alarm. Which is it
Answer: Very few
Question: I am concerned that a loud piercing sound will create anxiety. Is there a lower setting that can be heard through baby monitor in adjacent bedroom
Answer: Either way would work. The chia seeds make a little goo when the get wet. Wait long enough for this goo to appear. It will assist greatly in getting the little seeds to stick all over the pet. Once the seeds get saturated with water they are committed to sprouting. If they dry out after germination has begun they will rapidly die and you will need to wash them all off and begin again.

User questions & answers

Question: Can i purchase a second transmitter so I don't have to move it from the bed pad to the chair pad
Answer: You use two pads with one transmitter. Contact the provider of the product and they can walk you through it. Works great.
Question: Does it come with an alarm ? And how long is the cord
Answer: One alarm two pads... One pad for the chair and one pad for the bed. Wish it had two alarms so I didn't have to move it back and forth from room to room. The cords could be a little longer, but then someone might trip over them. The cords are long enough - one can make due. One does not need to reach an electrical socket. It uses one or two (AA or AAA) batteries. The batteries last a long time. For us - it was well worth the money. My husband is in stage 4 parkinson's with dementia and is clinically blind. He has no balance and cannot get up on his own - even though he tries from time to time. The chair / bed alarm has allowed me the freedom to move around the house and not be in the same room with him. The alarm is loud enough that I can hear it throughout the house. I also use a baby monitor - and can take the dog out or go get the mail. It amplifies the beep beep beep - so I can immediately come back in the house - knowing he is trying to get up. Easily wipes off (if necessary) - with a warm cloth. Anything else?
Question: CAn pads be purchased separately? If so, what are product numbers
Answer: I think it only comes with both pads and the sensors
Question: I don’t want my father to be able to hear the alarm, I only want the alarm to come through the receiver that with me. Is that the case with this item
Answer: The alarm is next to the chair or bed and is very loud. We mainly used this at night so we when my grandmother tried to get up when we were asleep. It's like in the hospital, they use these for the high fall risk patients so they can get there before they fall.

Question: Does the actual mat sounds or just the monitor? Can the person in bed hear the alarm

Question: Can to pads be connected at the same time
Answer: It make a "jingle noise' that is not irritating at all. It's working quote well for my mother with dementia.

User questions & answers

Question: Will this work for a 15,000 pound aircraft or does it have a max weight
Answer: The sensors are on a thin plastic film- An aircraft is too heavy
Question: do you have to change the battery every 14 days
Answer: I delivered the kit to my mother's rest home and they used it for several months. She doesn't try to get out of bed on her own anymore so they discontinued using it. I'm not sure how often they should change the batteries but I'm sure they used the unit for several months and did not change the batteries at all.
Question: the patients in only about 100 pounds, will it sense her when she gets up
Answer: Yes, definitely. It worked when my 45 pound six year old tried it out for us.
Question: Does this item have an adapter to plug directly into an electrical outlet
Answer: It's been 2 years since we used this, but I believe that it runs on batteries. The cord is to attach the pad to the alarm box, which I always put at the foot of the bed away from the pad. It worked best for us to be under the fitted sheet or under a waterproof pad in his chair. We have a large house, and we could hear the alarm from any room. It was very helpful in keeping my father-in-law safe.

Question: Is there any way to extend the cord going to the alarm? Is there a possible extender cord
Answer: No doesn't look like it to me. My dogs got so distressed with the pitch of the alarm that I had to find another option.
Question: sorry, poor English. Is monitor a remote that can carry to through house and not be by bed
Answer: No. Monitor is connected to a pressure sensitive pad by means of a wired connection. I don't recall the length of the wire. Not over 6 feet to be sure. Pad can be placed on a bed or chair. When activated, an audible alarm sounds when there is no pressure on the pad. So, when a person gets up from bed or chair an alarm would sound. The alarm unit must be connected and in proximity to the pad. I tried this for use with my father. As he got older he suffered from a couple of calls resulting in minor injury. I bought the unit to alert when he was up and moving around. And it worked for a while. My father soon learned how to disconnect the monitor because he did not like someone coming everytime he got up. Alternatively, there are better but more expensive systems that are camera based and remote but do require some expertise to properly install. Hope this is helpful.
Question: The alarm doesn't always sound when my mother get's up. Is there a trick to it or do I need to make a return
Answer: If your mother's full body weight is removed from the sensor pad and the alarm is not sounding, there could be an issue with either the sensor pad or the alarm monitor. First make the sure the batteries are functioning by pressing the test/reset button on the side of the alarm monitor, and confirm that the alarm sounds briefly. If the alarm does not sound after testing please replace the batteries and check the system again. If you still have issues please contact us at 800-373-2873 to handle. Thank you for your business. -Personal Safety Corp.
Question: how long does the pad last 45? 90? a year
Answer: I purchased this about a year ago and it's still working fine.

User questions & answers

Question: How thick is the pad? Is the pad firm or soft
Answer: The pad is not very thick and the sides are even thinner. It is is flexible but firm - it is kind of like the floor mat in your car. We had to remove the area rugs in our home because they were hard for my mom to maneuver around - she has no issues with this pad. Buying this pad was easily one of the best decisions I have made - I am able to sleep at night knowing that the alarm will sound if my mom tries to get up during the night.
Question: What size is the mat? The picture looks like a 3' x 6' mat
Answer: Mine measures 2’ x 4’ It fits perfectly under a bed when not in use. The mat has altered me when my 90 year old mother attempts to get out of bed without my help. My mom is a fall risk and the mat is the best purchase to help avoid any falls. I strongly recommend it.
Question: Would a cat set it off
Answer: No. I have two dogs and a cat and they have never set the alarm off. This Mat has only gone off with my mom stepping on it.
Question: Would a 10 lb. cat walking on this mat trigger the alarm
Answer: I'm sorry, I don't know. Quite possibly though, it is sensitive to pressure.
