13 best salinity refractometers
A salinity refractometer is a specialized instrument used to measure the concentration of salt (sodium chloride) in a liquid, typically in aqueous solutions. These refractometers are commonly used in various industrial, scientific, and laboratory settings for applications related to quality control, research, and environmental monitoring. Here are some key points about salinity refractometers:
Principle of Operation: Salinity refractometers work on the principle of measuring the refractive index of a solution. When light passes through a liquid, its speed and direction change based on the liquid's composition and concentration. The refractometer measures this change and provides a reading that can be used to determine the salinity of the solution.
Units of Measurement: Salinity can be expressed in different units, such as parts per thousand (ppt), practical salinity units (PSU), or specific gravity (SG). Salinity refractometers may provide readings in one or more of these units, depending on the model.
Applications:
- Aquariums: Salinity refractometers are commonly used by aquarium enthusiasts to monitor and maintain the salt levels in marine or brackish water aquariums, ensuring the well-being of aquatic life.
- Marine Science: Researchers and oceanographers use salinity refractometers to study ocean salinity levels, which can impact marine ecosystems and climate patterns.
- Food Industry: In food processing and manufacturing, these instruments help monitor the salinity of brines used for pickling and preserving foods.
- Chemical Analysis: Salinity refractometers are used in laboratories for various chemical analyses where salt concentration is a critical parameter.
- Environmental Monitoring: They are also used for monitoring the salinity of water bodies in environmental studies and water quality assessments.
Calibration: Like other measuring instruments, salinity refractometers require periodic calibration to ensure accuracy. Calibration is typically done using standard solutions with known salinity levels.
Maintenance: Proper care and maintenance are essential to keep a salinity refractometer in good working condition. Regular cleaning and calibration checks are recommended.
Types: There are both analog and digital salinity refractometers available. Digital models often provide more precise readings and may have additional features like temperature compensation.
Sample Handling: When using a salinity refractometer, it's crucial to handle the sample properly, ensuring that the instrument's prism or measurement surface is clean and free of air bubbles.
In summary, salinity refractometers are valuable tools for measuring the salt concentration in various liquid samples. They find applications in diverse fields, from aquarium maintenance to scientific research, and help ensure that salt levels are accurately monitored for specific purposes.

Question: | Is this accurate when mixing salt and setting your salinity for water change. Iv heard can be off a little when hadn't been mixed that long |
Answer: | Yes, mine is always off -.002 compared to refractometers. All devices calibrated. Talk to Hanna support and was told it won’t match a refractometer lol. I like it because it’s fast and easy, if I want my water at 1.026, I just make sure the Hanna reads 1.023 I guess others haven’t had this problem but I do, or the others don’t know their salt mix is high |
Question: | Can this be used to measure salinity of saltwater fish tank aquarium? Thanks |
Answer: | 2 inches |
Question: | Have you tested the device against another? Inaccurate compared to calibrated refractometer |

User questions & answers
Question: | It says "fill with salty water and allow it to sit for 24 hrs". anyone following that and find it helpful? my new one is off |
Answer: | I purchased mine for testing the spoil pH and watering needs and they both seem to be very accurate. I do not know how accurate it is for light testing. I do not know what your application is for, but if it's to see how much light is present for growing a garden, then you need a minimum of 6 hrs of sunlight a day, preferably 8. Of course it also depends on what you are trying to grow, some plants need much more than others. |
Question: | Can it be left inside the aquarium for continuous readings |
Answer: | Since soil most often is in/close to neutral state (with pH value of 7), when you use it to test the pH value of soil, it is highly likely that you find the needle in display window stay still (because the default pH value is set at somewhere between 7 and 8) . The needle will not swing substantially unless the meter in soil with strong acidity or alkalinity. Customers sometimes are misled by this appearance and hence regard the tester as a defective unit by mistake. Here are the steps of How To Use this soil meter: Step 1: Gently wiped the probes all the way up and down with dry cloth a few times before use Step 2: Push the switch to MOIST or PH or LIGHT position Step 3: Stick the probes into the soil 4-6 inches (2/3 of the probes) or more deep Step 4: Adjust the position of the probe until the pointer on the dial swing slightly Step 5: Note moisture/pH/light level in the dial Step 6: Remove probes from soil and wipe clean with dry cloth after each use Tips: This soil meter is designed to measure moisture and ph level of soil, so it CAN ONLY be used in soil, it CANNOT be used to test any liquids, such as pure water, lemon juice, vinegar and so on, or the probes may be damaged. |
Question: | I want this to test my fresh water aquarium i fill with softener water. Will it work |
Answer: | Yes there is a small piece of sponge material in the cap that you can apply storage solution whenever you plan to leave the cap on. I recommend that if you will be using your pen daily, you get a small glass cup ( the 100ml measuring cups work ideal) and keep storage solution in this cup and keep pen placed in this as opposed to removing and replacing cap continuously. I generally mix 20ml of storage solution with 30ml of distilled water to keep in cup for pen. |
Question: | Does this work with swimming pools |
Answer: | These are great pens for the hobbyist just remember when you do not see the check mark on your pH pen or on your PPM EC conductivity bluelab pen it is time to calibrate if you do not see this check mark displayed on either pin on the screen calibrate. I also recommend using the 7.0 bluelab calibration solution followed up by the 4.0 bluelab calibration solution to get a more accurate reading of the pH solution. Also use blue lab calibration solution for your conductivity meter as well these meters will last a very long time I had mine for almost 4 years and still in good shape keep your meters clean keep your pH bulb moist in store in the pH storage solution that is made by blue lab. Never let the bulb go dry if you do it will take 24 hours or it is good to give 24 hours to rehydrate your pH bulb. And if I'm not mistaken on the bottles the calibration solution of either your conductivity meter solution for calibration or your pH pen calibration solution it says on the bottle after opening don't use after three months I don't know if this matters a whole lot or not but I've used my solution over three months plenty of time and no noticeable difference in this. I guess the main thing is to keep your pH pen glass bulb hydrated I believe that this is probably the most important thing when owning a blue lab pH testing pin. If there is anyone to add to this conversation or to give me any advice that's positive please do so I am always willing to learn and listen so please if anyone has any experience with these pins other than me and something that I may not have mentioned or know please tell me or leave a review thank you I hope this has been helpful. And please stay positive with positive feedback just remember people there are no stupid questions and no mistakes only lessons thank you. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this one refractor have light built in it ? Really cool if had a tiny solar cell ..never needing a battery ! (Idea |
Answer: | This refractometer is used with outdoor or bright lights. You put your frac or producer water on and point it in the light to get your salinity level. No battery ever required for that. Now... if it’s used for something other than testing chlorides... I don’t know how it’s used. |
Question: | What's the dimensions of the case this product comes in |
Answer: | The plastic case is about 8.2 (L) X 3.5 (W) X 2.2 (H) in inches. |
Question: | How often do you re-calibrate, and when would you know if it needs to be re-calibrated |
Answer: | I would check about every month or so. As for when you would know if it needed re-calibration just put a few drops of fresh water on lens and see if it reads 0. If it doesn't re-calibrate. |
Question: | Can I use it fot beer |
Answer: | I have a brewing refractometer and tried using it to read salinity and it just read 0 on my tank and my pond so I'm guessing there is a difference between the two. I wouldn't have thought so. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Unit doesn’t stay calibrated any more still under 1 year how can I get replacement |
Answer: | Suction tube will be fine if it's a freshly opened bottle |
Question: | Is the eyepiece adjustable to allow you to focus on the values you're looking at |
Answer: | First, you would have to define “easily readable”. I have terrible eyesight and bifocals. I need my son to read the numbers because they are so tiny through the eyepiece. It measures quiet accurately and is the gold standard for saltwater aquariums. However, I don’t know if it would work quite as well on a ppt scale. The device measures in specific gravity numbers and ppt. It does read to 0 on the ppt side, but I can’t be sure if it will be that specific for you. You may want to start with the cheaper hydrometer or a more expensive electronic reader. Check out WikiHow’s How to measure salinity. It gives directions on 3 different ways. |
Question: | Is suction tube long enough or I need to buy wine thief as well |
Answer: | I have had the same problem and you can calibrate it with distilled water, but mine was still off by 2ppm regardless. |
Question: | Hoping to test salt level in a fresh water pond which requires 5 ppt, would this be easily readable with this device |
Answer: | I don't understand your question - can you re-phrase it? |
Product features
Dual Scale Seawater Salinity Refractometer
- DESIGNED FOR - testing the concentration of saltwater, help you to monitor and control the concentration of salt water.
- WIDELY USE - Can be used for Aquariums, Marine Monitoring, Agricultural, Gardening & Educational Purposes.
- EASY , ACCURATE & AFFORDABLE - This refractometer is more accurate and easier to use than traditional hydrometers, more affordable than digital refractometers.
- DUAL SCALE -- Provides reading of 0-100PPT(parts per thousand ) and corresponding specific gravity range 1.000 to 1.070. You can get the both result at just one test.
- AUTOMATIC TEMPERTURE COMPENSATION --The build-in Automatic Temperature Compensation feature makes it get consistently accurate reading, no need to control the liquids temperature deliberately, just make sure it's at roomtemperature .
-
Dual Scale
The scale range of this refractometer is 0~100‰ and the corresponding specific gravity range 1.000 to 1.070. These are the most common units to show salinity of water.
With this refractometer you can get the result in two different ways at the same time in just one test.
The min reading resolution is 1 ‰, this make it possible to mearsure low concentrated salt solutions.
( 1‰=1 PPT=1000PPM, PPT means"parts per thousand", PPM means"parts per million")
1
Calibration: Place a few drops of distilled water on the prism and use the screwdriver to adjust the calibration screw untill the reading is"0".
2
After calibration, place a few drops of solution you want to test on the prism.
3
Close the daylight plate and hold it under a light source, then look through the eyepiece, you can get the reading.
4
Clean the instrument with a soft cloth after use, and put it into the storage case.
Product description
The usual salinity of selected aqueous solutions
Example:Salinity 36 ppt means that there are 36 grams of salt in 1 liter aqueous solution.
Fresh water ------<0.5 ppt
Brackish water---0.5 to 30 ppt
Saline water------30 to 50 ppt
Brine-------------->50 ppt
Measurement
The liquid measurement is very easy. Place a few drops of the liquid on the optical part of the refractometer, cover the prism (the liquid will spread more easily over the prism), look throught the eyepiece
against the light (focus, if necessary) and you will be able to read the result value on the scale.
