12 best lab filtering funnels
Lab filtering funnels are essential pieces of equipment used in laboratory settings, particularly in chemistry and biology. They are designed to facilitate the separation of liquids and solids by passing a liquid through a filter medium while retaining the solid particles. Here's what you should know about lab filtering funnels:
Purpose: Lab filtering funnels are primarily used for the process of filtration. Filtration is a common technique in laboratories to separate solids from liquids or to remove impurities from a liquid.
Components: These funnels typically consist of a funnel-shaped glass or plastic body and a filter medium. The filter medium can be a filter paper, a membrane, or other porous materials that allow the liquid to pass through while trapping solid particles.
Types of Funnels:
- Büchner Funnel: This type of funnel is commonly used in vacuum filtration setups. It has a flat, perforated base that allows for suction filtration using a vacuum flask or pump.
- Hirsch Funnel: A Hirsch funnel is similar to a Büchner funnel but is designed for gravity filtration without the need for a vacuum source. It is often used for smaller-scale filtrations.
- Separatory Funnel: While not used for solid-liquid filtration, separatory funnels are used for liquid-liquid separations, often in organic chemistry.
Applications: Lab filtering funnels find applications in various scientific disciplines, including chemistry, biology, and environmental science. They are used for tasks such as removing precipitates from a liquid, separating suspended particles from a solution, or isolating specific compounds from mixtures.
Filter Medium: The choice of filter medium depends on the specific requirements of the filtration process. Filter papers with different pore sizes are available to accommodate various particle sizes and filtration rates. Membranes with specific properties may also be used for specialized applications.
Cleaning and Maintenance: Proper cleaning and maintenance of lab filtering funnels are essential to ensure accurate and consistent results. This includes regularly changing the filter medium, cleaning the funnel body, and ensuring that there are no leaks or blockages in the setup.
Safety: When using lab filtering funnels, it's important to follow safety protocols, especially when handling potentially hazardous chemicals. Proper personal protective equipment (PPE), such as gloves and safety goggles, should be worn, and work should be conducted in a well-ventilated area or within a fume hood if necessary.
Availability: Lab filtering funnels are readily available through scientific supply companies and can be purchased in various sizes and materials, including glass and plastic, to suit different laboratory needs.
Lab filtering funnels are essential tools in scientific research and analytical laboratories, aiding in the separation and purification of substances for a wide range of applications. Proper usage and care are crucial to obtaining reliable and accurate results in laboratory experiments.

Thermal Shock Resistance - average coefficient of expansion from 20° C to 200° C is 3.56 x 10-5, gradually increasing to 4.69 x 10-5 at 1050°C. Every batch of porcelain is heat tested in our factory. Glaze - No softening occurs up to 1000°C, and it is extremely white. Resistance to Chemical Action - Resistance to acids and alkalies is excellent, except for hydrofluoric acid.
User questions & answers
Question: | is this funnel intended for use with a 150mm dia filter paper |
Answer: | This all depends on the quality of your water and usage. This system can filter up to 750 gallons of drinking water before replacing the filter. Hope this helps. |
Question: | What is the dimension of the widest part of the funnel stem? This is to see if it will fit in my flasks. Thanks |
Answer: | Yes, this filter will leave minerals in your water but it will filter the bad contaminants. To correct user Allumaman - this filter uses a 0.5 submicron carbon block filter, it does not use a 20 micron filter. |

For vacuum filtration, this kit includes 500ml filter flask, 9cm porcelain buchner funnel, 9cm filter paper (100 pack), pre-drilled rubber stopper and 3/8 in. vacuum tubing with a 1/4 in. adapter sleeve.
User questions & answers
Question: | What size (diameter) filter paper does this use |
Answer: | what micron size filter |
Question: | Can this be autoclaved |
Answer: | This flask is very poorly made. It has bubbles in the glass. I don't know how it would stand up to autoclaving, but I don't trust it. |
Question: | What are its dimensions |
Answer: | The flask is bigger than a standard 500ml Pyrex erlynmeyer flask, but #7 stopper fits so mouth is the same. 7 3/4" tall by around 4 3/8" at widest diameter. Funnel is 1 3/4" deep by 3 5/8" ID around 9cm where paper sits. This tapers into a 3" stem and overall about 16cm total funnel length. Hope that helps, it's functional for the price, but a vac pump and fritted disk type funnel(magic) and that's why $200-300+ is needed for that setup. |
Question: | Its there anything holding the paper in place so there is no way for anything to bypass the paper and not be filtered |
Answer: | The paper does not secure very well around the sides. In fact, most paper filters will shed residue. I finally had success with singed polyester felt filter (for perfume filtering). They carry it in different forms on Amazon. You can buy it in different micron standards (depending on your needs). Good luck to you. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the correct rubber stopper to fit the 100mm size funnel |
Answer: | approximately 5" diameter and 14" length |
Question: | what's the diameter of the stem |
Answer: | Obviously that is not the intended use of the product and would probably require FDA certicication. I would, however, not have a problem using them in the kitchen for food I would consume. Hope that helps. |
Question: | What size filter paper does this funnel require |
Answer: | 190 micron is to fine for latex. |
Question: | Will this fit a 24/40 flask opening securly or do I need a rubber stopper |
Answer: | Yes it can, however, if you have a full can, you will have to hold up the strainer so the paint can drain into the can. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Which filter should I get for a 75 to 100 micron filtration |
Answer: | The diameter might differ from funnel to funnel and therefore I could not give you a definite answer, but what I can say is that it typically uses the #4 size silicone collar adapter and that is 35mm on the wider side of OD. |
Question: | For the 250ml funnel, it says the disk is 85mm, how big should the filter papers be? 85mm? Thanks |
Answer: | Possibly... I used them for air filtration. If you are filtering large amounts of ethanol, I think a larger system may be required. |
Question: | What size filter paper |
Answer: | It is safe material, highly durable and have a filtration rate of 99.97% that means they will filter down to .3 microns. I am not sure if it can be used for facial mask ,but someone has bought it for COVID-19 ,so I think you can try, |
Question: | what is the advantage or disadvantage to the funnel having two chambers in the neck |
Answer: | dear yes ,the Filter Discs is 90mm do not have to be cut to be 90mm |

User questions & answers
Question: | Puede utilizarse con filtro de diámetro 4.7 cm (1.85 in |
Answer: | The filter I purchased was a 60mm not a 100mm. The 60mm refers to the outside diameter of the funnel. I am using a fine screen which is 1.875 inch (47.6mm) in diameter rather than a standard filter paper. Assuming the wall thickness of the 100mm filter is not much different from that of the 60mm filter, you probably could use a 90mm diameter filter paper. If you are going to be using vacuum to filter ( I am not), the required diameter of filter paper only has to cover the holes in the bed of the filter rather than the entire inner diameter so perhaps 80mm diameter paper would do. |
