13 best qualitative lab filter paper
Qualitative lab filter paper is a type of specialized paper used in laboratories for various filtration processes. It is related to lab filters, filtration, and industrial scientific applications. Here's what you need to know about qualitative lab filter paper:
Filtration Purpose: Qualitative filter paper is primarily used for qualitative analysis in laboratory settings. It is not designed for precise quantitative measurements but is suitable for separating solids from liquids or gases.
Composition: Qualitative filter paper is typically made from cellulose fibers, such as cotton or wood pulp. Some variations may include added materials to enhance specific properties like wet strength or porosity.
Pore Size: Qualitative filter papers come in various pore sizes, which determine the particle size they can effectively capture. These sizes range from coarse to fine, allowing for filtration of a wide range of substances.
Thickness and Weight: Filter paper can vary in thickness and weight, depending on the intended application. Thicker papers are often used for filtering larger volumes or more substantial particulate matter.
Grades: Filter papers are available in different grades based on their filtration speed and retention capacity. Common grades include fast, medium, and slow flow rates, each suitable for specific applications.
Application: Qualitative lab filter paper is used in a variety of laboratory procedures, including gravity filtration, vacuum filtration, and filtration of precipitates or particulate matter from liquids or gases.
Chemical Compatibility: The choice of filter paper should consider its compatibility with the chemicals and solvents involved in the filtration process. Some filter papers are chemically treated to improve resistance to aggressive chemicals.
Sterility: In certain scientific and medical applications, sterile filter paper may be required to maintain aseptic conditions.
Disposable: Qualitative filter paper is generally considered disposable after use, as it may become clogged or contaminated during the filtration process.
Quality Control: Manufacturers of filter paper adhere to quality control standards to ensure consistency in pore size, thickness, and other properties, allowing for reliable and reproducible filtration results.
Availability: Qualitative lab filter paper is readily available from laboratory supply companies and comes in various shapes and sizes, including sheets, discs, or rolls.
In summary, qualitative lab filter paper is a crucial tool in laboratory filtration processes, used for separating solids from liquids or gases based on pore size, thickness, and other properties. It is commonly employed in a wide range of scientific and industrial applications to isolate and analyze substances effectively.

User questions & answers
Question: | Would this be the correct filtration level to remove waxes only, from winterized cannabis oil/ethenal |
Answer: | Not expert in this process but from literature, you would want to start with grade 4 as a pre-filter to remove the bulk of the wax. Then grade 1 and eventually grade 2 to eliminate the smallest traces. For an example of what grade 1 would remove, have a look at Tony3 review of this grade. To expand a bit as this is a growing usage of our filters: The wax filtration is slow so you better use vac filtration with a filter as large as possible. Using gravity filtration would work but will take forever. As previously mentioned best start with coarse filtration (grade 4) and increase retention (grade 1 then 2) this will also improve speed. If you plan to buy the 3 grades, we have a cost effective bundle for most sizes, search for "zenpore bundle". |

User questions & answers
Question: | Are these filter papers very absorbent when it comes to small droplets of water? I want to cut in strips to get at small droplets of water in sensors |
Answer: | Filter paper is more absorbent than normal paper, but it's not bloating paper. Depending on your needs it might work or not. I would need more details to answer better. I would suggest you buy the smallest size of grade 4 (fast) and test it. |

Clarifies liquids in routine laboratory applications and for air pollution monitoring. Used in air monitors to collect atmospheric dust for assessment of stain intensity. Also available in 46 x 57 cm sheets.
Product description
This Whatman 12.5cm, grade 1, cellulose filter paper is the most widely used filter paper for routine applications with medium retention (11µm) and flow rate. Traditionally, this grade is used in qualitative analytical separations for precipitates such as lead sulfate, calcium oxalate (hot), and calcium carbonate. In agriculture, it is used for soil analysis and seed testing procedures. It is also used for numerous routine techniques in the food industry to separate solid foodstuffs from associated liquid or extracting liquid; and is widely used in education for teaching simple qualitative analytical separations. In air pollution monitoring, using circles or rolls, atmospheric dust is collected from airflow and the stain-intensity is measured photometrically. For gas detection, the paper is impregnated with a chromogenic reagent and color formation is quantified by optical reflectance. Retention: 11µm. Diameter: 12.5cm. 100/Pack. Whatman #: 1001-125.
- 12.5cm
- Grade 1
- Covers a wide range of laboratory applications; frequently used for clarifying liquids
- Areas of use include the food industry, agriculture, air pollution monitoring, and gas detection
- Widely used in education for teaching simple qualitative analytical separations
User questions & answers
Question: | Are these ashless |
Answer: | Good Morning, These papers are Grade 1 and are not considered ash less. |
Question: | Will this be acceptable for fine particles |
Answer: | This filter paper is designed to remove particles 11 microns and larger from the liquid sample you are filtering. If your sample contains particles finer than 11 microns you can use a Millipore filter to remove them. However, Millipore filters require a special filter funnel and must be run using suction, so the overall cost would be high. I suggest you go on the Whatman website and find the Whatman filter paper with the smallest micron rating you can find and see if it can remove the solids from your sample. |
Question: | Are the filters absolute or nominal |
Answer: | These filters are nominal with particle retention rating at 98% efficiency. |
Question: | What Is It Made Of |
Answer: | According to our manufacturer, 98% Cellulose. |
