9 best pocket screw jigs
A pocket screw jig is a woodworking tool used for creating strong and secure joints when working with wood. It is particularly popular in woodworking and DIY projects where a clean and hidden joint is desired. Here's what you need to know about pocket screw jigs:
Purpose: Pocket screw jigs are designed to make pocket holes, which are holes drilled at an angle into one piece of wood and connected to another with screws. These holes are typically used for joining pieces of wood together, such as in constructing cabinets, furniture, and other wooden structures.
Angle: The jig allows you to drill holes at a specific angle (usually around 15 degrees) into the edge or surface of a piece of wood. This angle is essential for creating strong and hidden joints.
Ease of Use: Pocket screw jigs are known for their user-friendliness. They often come with built-in guides and clamps that make it easy to position and secure the jig to the workpiece. This ensures that the holes are consistently drilled at the correct angle and depth.
Hidden Joints: One of the main advantages of pocket screw joinery is that it creates strong joints while keeping the screws hidden from view. This is especially important in woodworking projects where aesthetics matter.
Versatility: Pocket screw jigs are versatile and can be used for various types of joints, including butt joints, miter joints, and edge-to-edge joints. They are suitable for joining different types of wood, including hardwoods and softwoods.
Types: There are different types of pocket screw jigs available, ranging from simple and manual jigs to more advanced models with additional features. Some jigs may be designed for specific applications or projects.
Screw Selection: When using pocket screw jigs, it's important to choose the right type and size of screws. Pocket screws are typically self-tapping and have a special head that helps pull the pieces of wood together tightly.
Strength: Pocket screw joinery is known for its strength and durability. It can provide a solid connection between wood pieces that can withstand a considerable amount of stress.
Finishing: After the screws are inserted, they can be covered with wooden plugs or filler to hide them completely. This adds to the overall aesthetic appeal of the finished project.
Maintenance: Proper maintenance of the pocket screw jig, such as keeping it clean and lubricating moving parts, will ensure its longevity and accurate performance.
In summary, pocket screw jigs are valuable tools in woodworking and construction projects, enabling the creation of strong and concealed joints. They are easy to use and offer versatility in joining different types of wood for various applications.

User questions & answers
Question: | how many screws |
Answer: | Mine came with just a few sample screws but I have an assortment of a couple thousand screws so it was no matter. I make furniture in a home shop so I mostly use construction screws and furniture grade FH screws in #6, #8; in 1&1/4, 1&5/8, and 2&1/2 inches. |
Question: | What is the primary difference between the R3, R4, & R5 units and which would be better for an advanced cabinet maker |
Answer: | If you build cabinets, furniture or any think to do with joining wood the one I would recommend is the K4 or K5. The K5 is the newer version which incorporates some innovative additions. The other jigs in the system are more portable, but a lot slower to use. The K4 is perfectly adequate for my shop. Buying the kit and the "briefcase" of screws will get you up and rolling fast. The video is very enlightening. Good luck. The R3 Jr. is fine for casual use and some specialty uses as explained in the offering but if you do a lot of woodworking with Kreg the K4 & 5 are more accurate and repeatable. |
Question: | Do you have to use their screws with this tool or can you use regular wood screws you buy at any hardware store |
Answer: | I vehemently dislike the Kreg style pock hole screw (which are "modified truss" head screws) for the simple reason that I dislike square drive screws. There are other manufacturers which offer pocket hole style screws but with a No. 7 or 8 torx drive (T15 size). These are much more user friendly than square drive screws which require the drill driver to be perfect aligned with the screw otherwise the square becomes rounded out. The torx drive screws allow for some wiggle room with the alignment won't damage the screw head. |
Question: | If this is more expensive than the R3 and clamp separately and the clamp is smaller why get this kit |
Answer: | Because with this kit you become irresistable to women, your beard becomes the envy of lumberjacks and your dog can jump 4 feet high on two legs. Who would not want all of that? |

Kreg Jig R3
The Home Improver's Solution
The Kreg Jig R3 is a great way to get started building with Kreg Joinery. It's a good choice if you build a few projects each year, or if most of your projects are smaller in scale. Plus, the R3 is handy to have on hand for making repairs around the home.
Clamp Pad Adapter
The Kreg Jig R3 includes a Clamp Pad Adapter, which allows the R3 to be easily secured to your workpiece using any standard bar clamp, C-clamp, or Kreg Face Clamp. For faster and more repeatable pocket holes, choose a Kreg Face Clamp.
Material Thickness Setting
From thin drawer boxes and craft projects to stout 2x4s, this Kreg Jig R3 can handle just about anything. Independent positioning sliders feature nine depth settings, allowing you to easily join materials from 1/2 inches to 1 1/2 inches thick in 1/8 inches increments.
Secure the R3 in Tight Spots
In certain, restrictive situations where the use of a clamp is not possible, the Kreg Jig R3 can be secured in place with a common wood screw. All you have to do is drive the screw through the mounting hole on the top of the jig. This application is demonstrated in the photo.
Fix Broken Wood Joints Fast
A Kreg Jig is the perfect tool for repairing broken drawers, beat up bookcases, wobbly chairs, fractured frames, and so much more—without messy glue or nails. You’ll be amazed how easy it is to fix what you have—instead of having to replace it—using the Kreg Joinery System.
Organized Carrying Case
A compact yet durable carrying case is included so that you'll always have a safe place to store your Kreg Jig R3 and organize all of the accessories it comes with. As a bonus, a depth-collar gauge has been molded into the case for handy reference.
Glass-Reinforced Nylon
The blue body of every Kreg Jig is made from a heavy-duty, glass-reinforced nylon. This composite material offers the resiliency and flexibility you need without sacrificing the strength and durability Kreg customers have come to expect.
Superior Angle
Unlike competing jigs with a shallower angle of approach, the Kreg Jig R3 features an optimized drilling angle specifically designed to increase driving efficiency and minimize the overall size of the pocket hole. The result is a compact pocket hole, less than 1 1/2 inches in size.
Wood Chip Relief
The Kreg Jig R3 includes one wood chip relief hole for every drill guide hole, designed to keep the drill bit clear of excess wood chips, minimizing drill-torque, increasing the longevity of your drill bits, and allowing you to complete a perfect pocket hole in just one plunge.
Hardened-Steel Core
The core of every Kreg Jig features hardened-steel, which carries a lifetime guarantee. The R3’s core shrouds the bit and supports the workpiece through 100% of the drill-stroke for minimal bit deflection, reduced tear-out, and a clean, pluggable pocket hole.

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this adjust for 1/2 inch material or do you have to buy the special 1/2 inch insert |
Answer: | The Kreg Jig 720 will work with 1/2" material. However, the screw head will finish even with the material and you will not be able to plug the holes. The addition of the Kreg Micro-Pocket Drill Guide Kit 730 will make a 25% smaller pocket-hole allowing the screw to set fully and you can plug the pocket-hole using the Kreg Micro Pocket-Hole Plugs. |
Question: | Can i put a 2 x 4 in this jig |
Answer: | The max thickness that can be used in the Jig is 1-1/2". |
Question: | Do the storage containers come off |
Answer: | Yes they do come off. I take mine apart after using it and store it back in the original box it came in. |
Question: | Are you, too, annoyed that Kreg shifted production to China |
Answer: | Yes. |

User questions & answers
Question: | I am needing a jig for 4(in.)x4(in.)x10(ft.) wood post. i realize this wouldn't work, but can anyone recommend one that can? thanks in advance |
Answer: | As it states in the description, deflects chips and connect 2 grippers for better control of large pieces. Check the video: https://d1y6jrbzotnyjg.cloudfront.net/V3MSA/cfd7863774ee4067ae4a3c816a4fd10e/V1/ad7607ded66c4f77898c5981786beb86/ShortForm-Generic-480p-16-9-1409173089793-rpcbe5.mp4?Expires=1552759553&Signature=TXTx0fF1p4Uzt68tNOVHzaO1K4UUbz1qJoX9WVsDe~ReJnbou3MLRqyMf2qM06MydXQMud4lf2zChbFp-YQbr7t731MJ2pn~tgK64bjXMcE1ko8UnnYlzgaBtLVGA4l4YXyBvhEk9ZREzLwvu0hXURT9-OHG-TkCcq1XN-stsmg_&Key-Pair-Id=APKAJ62XWKZ35EOVO4XA |
Question: | Is it possible to use this kit with material thicker than 1-1/2 inches? I ask because the site offers spacer blocks for user with "thicker" material. It would be nice to use the kit on 2x4s for example |
Answer: | The "deflector plate" is actually a gravity operated "heel" that simply drops down and hooks on the material you are pushing. There's considerable grip in the rubber pad portion of the push block, but when you reach the end of a board or similar, the heel drops down and catches on the edge of wood, permitting easy/secure push through of the wood. |
Question: | how would i get a long piece of wood to position in the clamp, like an 8ft 2x4? I see short pieces stand up in the jig, would a long board be flimsy |
Answer: | We have a video showing how to build a GRR-RIP BLOCK Stand that magnetically mounts to your jointer! Watch it on YouTube here: https://youtu.be/3qUBe90H-Q8 |
Question: | What country is this made in |
Answer: | I don't have the Bench Dogs push pad but I do own 2 of these Gripper pads as well as several "plain" push pads. In my experience, the GRR-Rip Block is different in 2 ways. The Gripper has 4 "heel hooks" that hang over the edge of your work piece to get a better push on the end stock. And it can also be used on its edge (it have been formed with a 90 degree angle) so you can push stock on a router table or to stabilize wood while re-sawing on a band saw (and this is where those hooks really help). But the price of the Gripper is 2-1/2 times the Bench Dog, so the question would be: is the GRR-Rip Blockr twice as good as the Bench Dog. And I would probably say no to that. But the ultimate decision is of course yours. Hope this helped. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Comes with the 3 clamps show in the picture |
Answer: | If you mean fasten, then yes; but only if the timbers are sufficiently cured to avoid twisting and warping after installation. I recommend 3 on the long side and 2 on the short side. If using cedar, 2 and 2 may suffice. 4 inch GRKs, or longer, will hold better, but are harder to recess, although fewer will be required. |
Question: | What is the difference between the two k5 master system with screws and clamps offered other than price? why is one more expensive than the other |
Answer: | They are square drive screws. |
Question: | Does the k5 master kit come with 1 clamp or three? The image used doesn't match the description |
Answer: | Yes, they are. I just finished a project using these and 2X6s. You end up using three screws per joint rather than two per joint for 2x4s. |
Question: | Where is this made |
Answer: | I just measured one with a ruler. The shank of the screw is dead on 2 1/2 inches. |

The Kreg Jig offers our simplest workpiece-clamping system ever. The ratcheting clamp simply slides into place against your workpiece. Then, you lift the handle until you hear and feel two 'clicks' and that’s it. Now your clamp is set until you change to a different material thickness.
Support with Built-In Storage
Two large support wings can be attached to both sides of the K5 base. This way, long workpieces get solid support and won’t tip. Plus, there’s a large storage compartment under the lid in each wing where you can keep your drill bits, screws, and accessories close at hand, but out of the way.
Swiveling Dust Collection
The Kreg Jig K5 comes with a removable dust port that swivels from side to side so that you can position it exactly where you want it, and then attach it to a standard vacuum house. This keeps your work area free of chips and debris, makes drilling easier, and prolongs drill bit life by reducing heat.

User questions & answers
Question: | beginner easy |
Answer: | If you mean a scribe or a wheel, then no. There is a little divot in the end of the ruler where you can rest the tip of a sharp pencil to mark a line. That would be accurate enough for most work. |
Question: | How long does the specialized drill bit last? Looks like you must buy from Kreg. Also, can I find these screws elsewhere |
Answer: | Not at all. Has 90 and 45 degrees only. ..and even in 90 and 45 it's works bad. .because it has this movement even when you tite it with the gold screw. ..it can be 88 or 92 so it's not square. ... |
Question: | i'm having difficulty deciding between this and the K4MS. Both around the same price although the K4MS seems to have extra items. Suggestions |
Answer: | The Kreg Foreman requires the use of the Kreg Quik-Bit which is included in the Kreg K5 Jig Package. |
Question: | Have you tried the K4 as well? Which do you like better |
Answer: | I started with the Jr. then moved to the K5 Master system. I am about to move up to the Foreman because I'm doing so much. This will be much easiest than using a drill, it will take it out of you after hours of drilling pocket holes even on the K5. |

User questions & answers
Question: | I noticed that some one mentioned an app that will tell what type of pocket screw to use with what ever thickness and type of wood what is its name |
Answer: | I have not heard about an app, but Kreg Tools has a template that does this. Current price is 9.99 at Kreg.com. Inside on the top lid of the pocket hole screw kit is a quick reference guide also. Just a note, I find it works best for me to round down the wood size. |
Question: | Must I use Kreg screw? Can I use other type of screw 'non kreg' type |
Answer: | I have used Kreg screws for other non-pocket hole projects as well I love them so much. The screws are very durable - I have unscrewed and screwed in the same screws with no evidence of wear and the square drive heads I've never stripped. They're also, in my opinion, pretty nicely-priced - I accidentally bought two types of wrong-length screws for my first pocket hole project but I've later used those for other things! Very high quality self-drilling screws! |
Question: | Do you set the depth guide to the drilling board, or the receiving board? They may differ in thickness. Thanks |
Answer: | STEP ONE: Measure the width of your work piece. The first step in using your Kreg pocket hole jig is to measure the thickness of the material you will be drilling into. You will use that measurement for the next two steps. For our example we will use a measurement of 3/4 inch.Your pocket jig includes drill, collar and allen wrench.STEP TWO: Set up your drill bit.The drill bit that came with your Kreg pocket hole jig has two pieces: the drill bit and the stop "collar" which slips onto the smooth part of the drill bit.Your pocket jig also came with an allen wrench that fits into the hole on the side of the collar. Use your allen wrench to loosen the collar by turning it to the left. As soon as you can move the collar up and down the drill bit, stop turning.Look at your drill bit. The very tip of your bit will drill a short, narrow hole. The wider, longer section in the middle of the bit will drill a bigger hole. That bigger hole is the "pocket" that will hide the pocket holes screw.Find the mark that's right for your plan.Your pocket jig has scale markings from 1/2 inch to 1 1/2 inch molded right into the base to make setting up the drill bit very easy.Lay your drill bit in the slot of your pocket jig. Line the very first part of of the wider section of your drill bit with the 3/4 inch marking. While holding your bit in place, slide the collar toward the tip of the drill bit until it is stopped by the front end of the pocket jig. Make sure the hole in the collar is visible.Still holding the bit in place, use your allen wrench to tighten the collar in place by turning the allen wrench to the right.Once your collar is tight, double-check that your drill bit is still lined up at the 3/4 inch mark.Your drill bit is now ready to drill the right depth required by your plan!Insert the drill bit into your drill and tighten it securely. The Kreg pocket hole jig has adjustments for drill angle.STEP THREE: Set up the drill guide on your pocket jig.We will use the same 3/4 inch measurement from Step One. Loosen the brass nut near the top of your Kreg pocket hole jig, so that you can move the drill guide up and down.Find the 3/4 inch mark on the side of the drill guide, and then tighten the brass nut to hold the drill guide in that position.Your drill guide is now ready to drill your pocket holes at the correct angle.STEP FOUR: Position your piece in your Kreg Pocket Hole Jig.With the adjusted drill bit securely fastened in your drill, put the drill bit into one of the guide holes. Start the drill. When it reaches full speed, slowly lower it into the wood.To keep wood chips and sawdust from accumulating in the guide hole, bring the drill bit partway up several times as you are drilling each hole.Your Kreg Pocket Hole Jig makes fast work of these holes.Unclamp and move your workpiece so that you can drill the rest of the pocket holes needed on that piece. |
Question: | What length and thread do you use mainly for 3/4" plywoods and 3/4" hardwoods |
Answer: | 1 1/4 length screws, I find that the coarse threads are the best about 90% of the time. Cheers |

Pocket-Hole Screw Kit
Square-drive prevents bit slipping while driving
When you’re building a project, there are few things more aggravating than having your driver bit slip, spin, and strip out the screw head. All too often, that leaves you with a screw you can’t drive the rest of the way in or back out, so you’re stuck. Kreg Screws have a square-drive head that works with a #2 square drive bit to drive screws without the driver slipping. That means you can drive every screw completely, quickly, and with confidence.
Flat-bottom head seats firmly in pocket hole
Ordinary woodworking screws and drywall screws have a head with a conical shape on the underside. The head on a Kreg Screw is perfectly flat on the bottom. That flat shape mates perfectly with the flat pocket in a Kreg pocket hole. So, when you drive a Kreg Screw into the pocket hole, it the force is applied straight toward the screw tip, presses evenly on the pocket, and holds the joint tightly together, without deforming the pocket, which could split the wood.
Smooth shank draws the joint together
The threads on a Kreg Screw stop partway up the screw shank, which leaves a smooth area below the screw head. It’s there for good reason. When you drive the screw in, the threaded portion grabs into the workpiece you’re attaching to, pulling the screw in. The other piece glides freely over the unthreaded part of the screw, allowing that piece to pull tightly against the mating piece — without interference from unnecessary threads.
Self-tapping tip drills its own hole without splitting
When you assemble a joint with Kreg Screws, the pocket hole is all you have to drill. There’s no need for a pilot hole in the mating piece. That’s because Kreg Screws have a self-tapping tip that 'drills' its own hole, so the screw drives in quickly and easily without splitting the wood, like ordinary screws often do. This makes assembly much easier, too, since you don’t have to worry about whether your pilot hole will line up correctly.
