12 best kreg deck screw

Kreg deck screws are a type of wood screw specifically designed for use in deck construction and outdoor woodworking projects. Kreg, a company known for its innovative woodworking tools and accessories, produces these screws to provide a reliable and durable fastening solution for decking applications.

Here are some key features and characteristics of Kreg deck screws:

  1. Corrosion Resistance: Kreg deck screws are typically made from materials that offer excellent corrosion resistance. This is crucial for outdoor applications where the screws are exposed to the elements, including rain and humidity.

  2. Coating: Many Kreg deck screws come with a special coating to enhance their durability and protect them from rust. Common coatings include zinc plating or other weather-resistant finishes.

  3. Self-Tapping: Kreg deck screws are often designed as self-tapping screws. This means they have a cutting edge that helps create a pilot hole as the screw is driven into the wood. This feature simplifies the installation process and reduces the likelihood of splitting the wood.

  4. Thread Design: The screws usually have a specific thread design optimized for wood. The thread helps provide a strong grip and prevents the screw from backing out over time.

  5. Head Types: Kreg deck screws typically have a flat or pan head. The choice of head type may depend on the specific application and personal preference.

  6. Compatibility with Kreg Jigs: Kreg offers a range of pocket-hole jigs, and the deck screws are often designed to work seamlessly with these jigs. This ensures accurate and efficient screw placement in woodworking projects.

  7. Various Lengths and Gauges: Kreg deck screws are available in different lengths and gauges to accommodate various decking materials and thicknesses. This allows for flexibility in design and construction.

When using Kreg deck screws, it's essential to follow the manufacturer's guidelines for proper installation to ensure optimal performance and longevity. These screws are a popular choice among DIY enthusiasts and professional woodworkers for building strong and reliable outdoor structures.

User questions & answers

Question: Does it come with a drill bit
Answer: I would think so. You could allways drill a pilot hole but you would need a long bit. The one you have referenced are for soft wood and plywood. I think I would look for one that is made for hard wood. I hope this helps.
Question: What length do i need for securing 2x4 butt joints
Answer: I don't believe they come in that size (blue coat). They do seem to have a pocket screw in 1" the Kreg SML-C1-500 1-Inch #8 Coarse Washer-Head Pocket Hole Screws. They are priced at about $20 for 500.
Question: Can these be used for hard wood
Answer: Hello, The SML-C250B-125 will come in a nice little plastic storage box. Thanks!
Question: Does Kreg have these blue kote screws in 1" or 3/4"? I'd like to pocket hole 1/2" to 5/8" plywood for a outdoor planter box. thx
Answer: The 100 count screws do not include the KTX driver that is needed to drive these screws. However, they do come inside of the 700 count boxes. The part number for just the driver is DECKDRIVER if you need to purchase this separately.

KREG

Product description

Kreg Zinc Screws are a good choice for a wide variety of indoor projects with limited exposure to the elements. Zinc screws provide adequate rust protection, and serve as an affordable alternative to our more protective Blue-Kote and stainless screw varieties. Available in a variety of sizes, thread options, head styles, and quantities.

From the Manufacturer

This 2" coarse thread, #2 square drive washer head screw works well in softer material. The washer head of this screw is our most popular head style as the wide bearing surface of the head will not overdrive in the bottom of the pocket. This is especially important in softer material such as plywoods and composites. The screw also features a type 17 auger tip that self-taps its' own hole, eliminating the need to predrill in even the hardest materials. Kreg screws also have larger diameter steel shanks than many other screws on the market today making for an impressively strong screw that is almost impossible to break. Our screws have a zinc finish and a dry-lubricant coating that eases driving torque and provides greater rust resistance. For maximum rust resistance, look to our Sun-Seal coated weather resistant screws.

  • Square-drive head and self-tapping tip for easy driving without bit slipping, wood splitting
  • Flat-bottom head and smooth shank draw the pocket-hole joint together tightly
  • Case-hardened steel won’t bend, snap, or break
  • Coarse threads for softwoods, such as pine; and for plywood, MDF, particleboard
  • Maxi-Loc washer head for standard Kreg pocket holes

User questions & answers

Question: I need to join 3/4" baltic birch plywood to 2x4 oak board. would these be the correct pocket screws to use? thanks
Answer: I used these screws for hanging exterior vinyl siding. The washer type head was similar in size to the head of a roofing nail. IMO they were much better than the nails my contractor was using (We worked side by side) because if I made it to tight I could easily back it off to leave room for expansion. Again IMO If you don't mind the look of the head or if the head is not going to show these screws will work fine for any project. GL
Question: According to the SKU (and price) these are zinc and not stainless steel as described in the technical details, ie only for indoors w/ no moisture
Answer: According to the Kreg charts that I have found, if you are joining 1 1/4 to 1 1/4 you need 2" screws. If you go to the Kreg website they probably have screw size charts that will confirm this size. So, yes ... 2" is correct.
Question: Has anyone used these for project's that don't involve pocket holes? I'm looking to hang some panels on a wall through studs
Answer: The Kreg Blue-Kote Screws will not include a drill or driver bit.
Question: Would these be best to join 1 1/4" stock or should I order the 2 1/2" screws? Thanks, Matt
Answer: 2-1/2 inch screw is needed.

  • Sharp edge of self-tapping tip drills a cleaner pilot hole

User questions & answers

Question: Can I use the square but that came with my Kreg kit for these screws
Answer: It doesn't seem not bleed. What might have given rise to the rumors that it does is that the blue coating can scrape off if hammered or screwed past a tight fit. This leaves a blue streak that does not come off easily. If someone saw this after the fact, they might assume the blue just leashes out over time.
Question: I am building an outdoor dining table. Which Kreg system and screws are best suited to this project? I will be using treated 2x4s, and 2x6s
Answer: Gary, I decided not bother with coated vs uncoated on projects, so I use the coated screws exclusively. Most of my projects are outdoor projects where coated screws are needed, but even when building shelving for workshop or house, I use the coated 2 1/2" screws when I'm using 2x lumber. Kreg pocket hole system is the way to go!
Question: I have had a couple of people tell me that if the blue kote screws are used on a project that is stained, over time the blue color will bleed through
Answer: they are longer than you need since the weakest part of the joint will be the small amount of plywood captured by the screw. Either 1 1/4 or 1 1/2 would be fine. I'd use 1 1/2 just because.
Question: It appears the blue coated 2 1/2" screws cost the same as the zinc plated. What would be the downside of just using the blue always
Answer: You are correct, these are just standard hardened steel with a zinc coating and not stainless. I have notified Amazon of the error. You could also use them outdoors, but depending on how much moisture or other corrosive elements are involved, you would then need to check and possibly replace them periodically.
