12 best spiral point taps
Spiral point taps, also known as gun taps or through-hole taps, are cutting tools used in machining and metalworking to create threads in drilled holes. They are a type of threading tap known for their specific design and function. Here's what you should know about spiral point taps:
Thread Creation: Spiral point taps are primarily used for creating internal threads in through-holes. Unlike some other types of taps, they are not suitable for blind holes where the hole does not go all the way through the material.
Flute Design: The defining feature of spiral point taps is their flute design. These taps have flutes or grooves that spiral up the tap at an angle. This spiral design helps in ejecting chips and facilitates efficient chip removal during the tapping process.
Cutting Action: Spiral point taps have a cutting edge that moves in a forward direction, away from the operator, as the tap is turned clockwise. This forward cutting action allows for faster and more efficient threading, making spiral point taps well-suited for production environments.
Material Compatibility: Spiral point taps are commonly used with materials such as steel, stainless steel, aluminum, and other metals. They are particularly effective in softer materials where chip evacuation is crucial to prevent clogging.
Types of Threads: Spiral point taps are available in various thread types, including metric and imperial (inch) threads, depending on the application and the specific requirements of the project.
Taper, Plug, and Bottoming Taps: Spiral point taps come in different configurations, including taper, plug, and bottoming taps. Taper taps have a more gradual starting point and are used to initiate threading. Plug taps are used for intermediate threading, and bottoming taps have a shorter, more pronounced point and are used to thread near the bottom of a hole.
Appropriate Speeds and Feeds: When using spiral point taps, it's important to follow recommended speeds and feeds to achieve accurate and efficient threading while prolonging the life of the tap.
Coolant and Lubrication: Proper lubrication and the use of cutting fluids are essential when using spiral point taps. This helps reduce friction, heat, and tool wear during the threading process.
Thread Depth Control: Operators should exercise care to control the depth of the threads, especially when using bottoming taps, to avoid over-tapping and potential damage to the workpiece.
Tapping Machines: In industrial settings, spiral point taps are often used with tapping machines or CNC machines to ensure precision and consistency in thread creation.
Spiral point taps are valuable tools for professionals in machining and metalworking industries, offering efficiency and speed in creating threaded holes. However, it's important to select the appropriate tap type, size, and configuration based on the specific threading requirements and materials being worked on, as well as to follow proper tapping procedures to achieve high-quality results.

- Spiral point taps are also called screw-point taps, suitable for processing through-hole threads and deep-hole threads. Featured with high strength, fast cutting speed, clear tooth pattern and long life.
- Spiral point tap is a deformation of the straight flute tap. The cutting edge of the straight flute is slanted to form an angle, and the chips are discharged forward along the direction of feed. The through-hole threads should be preferentially drilling by spiral point taps.
- Made of high speed steel (HSS), threading tool is good for general purpose applications, offering high hardness, toughness and wear resistance.
GENERAL SELECTION BASIS
- Use with tapping oil to get higher quality thread and more durable taps. It is easy to cause damage for uneven force if the machine taps are used by hand.
- When selecting the cutting speed, please consider the tap material, type, thread teeth, hole shape, effective diameter of the bottom hole, processing material and cutting oil .
- Cutting oil is lubrication, cooling and anti-sticking. Be sure to select the appropriate cutting oil for complex tapping process.

User questions & answers
Question: | Can this be used to tap stainless steel? I only need to use the tap once, then I am willing to dispose of it |
Answer: | I use my tap to clear block holes in galvanized electrical switch boxes. I however believe the tap would work on stainless steel. Just as long as you drill the appropriate pilot hole for the tap. |
