14 best polyurethane glues
Polyurethane glue, also known as PU glue, is a type of adhesive known for its versatility and strong bonding properties. Here's what you need to know about polyurethane glues:
Chemical Composition: Polyurethane glue is made from a chemical compound called polyurethane. It typically comes in a liquid or gel form and cures (hardens) when exposed to moisture, often from the air or the materials being bonded.
Versatile Bonding: Polyurethane glue is versatile and can be used to bond a wide range of materials, including wood, metal, plastic, ceramics, stone, glass, and more. This versatility makes it a popular choice for both household and industrial applications.
Water-Activated: One of the unique features of polyurethane glue is that it requires moisture to cure. This means that you should dampen the surfaces you want to bond before applying the glue. The presence of water initiates the curing process.
Strong and Durable Bonds: Polyurethane glue creates exceptionally strong and durable bonds. It is known for its ability to withstand extreme temperatures, moisture, and environmental factors, making it suitable for both indoor and outdoor use.
Expanding Properties: When polyurethane glue cures, it expands slightly. This can be advantageous for filling gaps and irregularities in the materials being bonded, resulting in a more solid and tight bond.
Longer Curing Time: Compared to some other types of adhesives like cyanoacrylate (super glue), polyurethane glue has a longer curing time. Depending on the brand and conditions, it may take several hours to reach full strength.
Flexibility: Polyurethane glue remains somewhat flexible once cured, which can be beneficial for applications where the bonded materials may experience movement or stress.
Cleanup: Cleanup of excess polyurethane glue can be done with solvents or mechanical removal before it cures. Once cured, it can be difficult to remove.
Applications: Polyurethane glue is commonly used in woodworking for tasks like laminating, joining, and bonding wooden components. It's also used in construction, automotive repair, and various DIY projects.
Safety Precautions: When working with polyurethane glue, it's essential to follow safety guidelines provided by the manufacturer. This may include wearing protective gear and working in a well-ventilated area.
Overall, polyurethane glue is a versatile adhesive that is valued for its strength and durability. It is suitable for a wide range of bonding applications, particularly when you need a strong and lasting bond that can withstand different environmental conditions.

The product that started it all. Original Gorilla Glue built a name for itself with its incredible, industrial holding power and versatility. The water activated polyurethane formula expands into materials to form an incredibly strong bond to virtually anything. Gorilla Glue is a 100% waterproof glue, safe for indoor and outdoor use and strong enough to stand up to the elements. Gorilla Glue’s your solution for almost any project or repair. Sand it, paint it, stain it. Simply stated, it’s the Toughest Glue on Planet Earth. Directions: 1. Prepare and Dampen the Surfaces: All surfaces must be clean, dust free and tight fitting. For shiny surfaces, such as metals, glass and some plastics, roughen up the material to give the glue something to bite into. Lightly dampen one surface with water. We recommend using a damp cloth or spraying with water. Do not saturate the surface. For dense hardwoods, lightly dampen both surfaces prior to gluing. 2. Evenly Apply Gorilla Glue Onto the Dry Surface. Carefully apply onto the dry surface. Do not over apply. We recommend wearing gloves or spreading the glue with a disposable brush. 3. Clamp the Two Surfaces Together Tightly. Make sure the clamping pressure is distributed evenly across the surface. Or, if you don’t have a clamp, use heavy objects or Gorilla Tape to achieve the appropriate clamping pressure. Clamp objects for 1–2 hours. For best results, allow 24 hours to cure. 4. Clean up: If you need to remove any uncured “squeeze out” or wet glue, we recommend wiping with a dry cloth or using a standard paint thinner. Once the glue is dry, it is best removed mechanically: Try sanding, chiseling, scraping or picking. 5. Storage Tips: After each use, wipe the bottle’s lid and nozzle clean with a dry cloth. While still squeezing, tightly replace the cap and then store in a cool, dry place. You should expect a year shelf life. User questions & answers
Question: | Will this work on vinyl |
Answer: | polyurethane glue sticks to practically everything - including your skin and clothing. One thing you should know about it is that as it dries, Gorilla Glue expands when it cures, creating a foam 3x thicker than the original application. If you are trying to seam-seal vinyl flooring, this would not be a good choice. |
Question: | Does this work with concrete to concrete? My 4' blue stone step fell and I don't want to redo the mortar |
Answer: | Answer: VHB Tape provides the simplicity of a tape fastener with incredible strength. May replace rivets, bolts, screws, spot welds, liquid adhesives and other permanent fasteners. Glue is unaffected be extreme heat, cold, or water - great for indoor and outdoor repairs - 100 Percent waterproof Creates an incredibly strong bond to most surfaces including wood, stone, metal, ceramics, foam, glass, brick, concrete and more Glue expands 3-4 times while penetrating the surfaces for additional strength; Dried glue is paintable, stainable and sandable |
Question: | Can I use this to add tile to painted sheetrock |
Answer: | The glue swells as it dries, it would not be suited for gluing anything together that you would want to be perfectly flat and can not vice together. Since this glue swells according to how much you use, you would have to be pretty darn accurate per tile. |
Question: | How do I get gorilla premium glue off my hands? I have tried thinners, turpentine, meths, petrol & hand cleaner |
Answer: | First off, never use soap and water initially, or it will just make it alot harder (nearly impossible) to remove. The best solution I have found is to just use Goop all by itself first. The stuff with pumice seems to work best. Anyway, apply the Goop to your hands and rub them together vigorously, use one hand to wrap around each finger of the other a clean each finger individually, then repeat with the other hand, then sprwad your fingers on both hands and interlace them to get between all fingers. THEN (very important) wipe off your hands completely with a DRY paper towel or rag. If your hands still feel at all sticky, then do the above AGAIN. Once you have wiped off all the glue and most of the goop with the paper towels you can wash your hands if desired, but it would be best to wait if you can as the goop will continue to break down the slight glue residue. If after all this you still have sticky hands tyou can make them less annoying by applying talcum (baby) powder. |

User questions & answers
Question: | what is the best glue for boat building Plywood |
Answer: | There’s a spray paint called Chalk. It’s an ultra-matte finish, delivering a velvet like appearance. Using Minwax satin over a chalk type paint should be no problem, if you want to raise the sheen. The thing to remember is you can ALWAYS use an oil-based paint or finish over a water-based finish...but NEVER use a water-based over an oil-based product. It will curl up and peel or flake off over a short period of time. Easiest way to remember this...oil floats on water, not the other way around. That’s why they can clean up oil spills...it floats on the surface. |
Question: | Manufacturer claims on their chat service that this glue will not last more than 36 months additionally company refused to replace product |
Answer: | I’d use a lacquer, available in spray. You may try an acrylic lacquer...it probably won’t wilt the flowers like a solvent based lacquer may...and it comes in a few different finishes, like satin, gloss, or matte. Alternately, a dulling spray can be used to give a flat appearance. I think Krylon makes this spray, but it does wipe off easily. A chalk ultra-matte finish is permanent. Hope this helps. |
Question: | Is this the one that dries hard like plastic |
Answer: | Can does not say a min but drying times very above 77 F. I have put it on in the 50 F and no problem. |
Question: | Will Gorilla Glue bond leather to rubber (shoes |
Answer: | I suppose you could, but I personally wouldn't. This product is more designed to be used as a finish on wooden surfaces. There are probably better products out there for use on metal. |

Question: | How long does this take to bond? I can't get it to stick |
Answer: | I used it to put up sign letters in humid weather. It took about 3-5 minutes to set and within 30 minutes each letter was secure. Bonus was that an hour after I did the job we had one of our FL surprise torrential downpours. It rained for several hours. I was just sure that I would find all the letters of the sign on the ground the next morning, but they were still in a straight line secured to the wall. This is not the product I use for that kind of job as a rule, but I was in a bind so gave it a shot. No complaints. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can I use this to re-glue some self stick floor ties that have come loose |
Answer: | Yes, I believe it will work. You should be careful not to apply too much as it may ooze around the edges of the tiles. Wipe up any that does seep out right away with a paper towel with mineral spirits. You will probably want to weigh the tiles down until the glue fully sets - about a half hour should do it. Avoid full traffic for 24 hours. |
Question: | Will this work on a painted concrete surface ? Applying a stone veneer to an outside painted cinder block wall |
Answer: | I used it to waterproof holes in a reinforced concrete roof for the passage of solar electric cables and solar hot water circulating pipes. The roof was painted with standard latex. Worked perfectly. |
Question: | could I use this product to "glue" metal screen to concrete block (to block out rats |
Answer: | The "performance Facts" as written on the label reads: Adheres to Wood,OSB,Drywall,Brick,CONCRETE, Masonry,Stone,Marble, Granite,METAL,Pvc,Foam Insulation.I have used it to glue together broken Roof tiles and it works pretty good for that too. I would suggest using some tape To help maintain the screen in its place while the glue completely cures. |
Question: | can glue be used to reinforce stick on tiles in corners and around pipes and radiators |
Answer: | Yes, it will stick and it will stay. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Cutting board safe |
Answer: | I use this glue for just about any wood application. But I have no experience with boat building, if that is relevant. |
Question: | Is this product food safe |
Answer: | Been using g-glue for 15 years. It holds up well in recommended apps. Slick surface materials are a no-go. O/W, what else is better ??? |
Question: | is it thin enough to use with a 14 gauge adhesive syringe |
Answer: | It is urethane. If you do not get air in the surface product it will dry clear. If you get air in the glue it will dry yellow with air bubbles in it. Urethane is used for finishing wood table tops and wood floors. It take a long time to dry. But works as advertised. If you want the one that dries quickly you want the so called 5 second fix. The 5 second fix uses UV light to dry quickly. Warning the 5 second fix does not work as advertised. It is best to use as a filler not a glue. If you have gaps and cracks to fill in plastic, 5 Second fix is your desired product. If you need to glue something and have time to let it dry Gorilla Glue is your desired product. Both have their desired effects and uses. |
Question: | Will this work to repair a 1/8 " crack on tick terra cotta flower pot |
Answer: | Hello, We would not recommend Original Gorilla Glue for this application. Instead, we suggest trying our Gorilla Clear Grip contact adhesive which will provide a flexible, waterproof bond. The same serious strength you expect from Original Gorilla Glue, in a dries white, faster formula. White Gorilla Glue is a 100% waterproof glue, safe for indoor and outdoor use and strong enough to stand up to the elements. The white glue easily bonds foam, wood, metal, ceramic, stone and much more! White Gorilla Glue is a moisture activated adhesive. It is important to replace the cap tightly, and store in a cool, dry place. You should expect a year shelf life. Directions: If you’re using White Gorilla Glue for the first time, we always recommend trying a test piece first. All surfaces must be clean, dust free and tight fitting. Carefully apply a paper thin layer of White Gorilla Glue onto the other, dry surface. Do not over apply. We recommend wearing gloves or spreading the glue with a disposable brush. Clamp the two surfaces together tightly. Make sure the clamping pressure is distributed evenly across the surface. Or, if you don’t have a clamp, use heavy objects or Gorilla Tape to achieve the appropriate clamping pressure. For lighter objects, try using rubber bands to hold the pieces together tightly. Clamp objects for 30–60 minutes. For best results, allow 24 hours to cure. If you need to remove any uncured “squeeze out” or wet glue, we recommend wiping with a dry cloth or using a standard paint thinner. Once the glue is dry, it is best removed mechanically: Try sanding, chiseling, scraping or picking. After each use, wipe lid and nozzle clean with a dry cloth. Answer: | Yes, it will be good enough. One of the ladies in our office had a shoe sole issue with a pair of heels she was wearing and the Gorilla glue was a permanent fix. |
Question: | does this product foam when drying |
Answer: | Yes. It does foam after a few minutes, so you need to wipe off the excess before leaving the item unattended. It's hard to get off once it hardens. You don't need to apply too much of the glue. It works great. You have to make sure you squeeze the bottle to remove most of the air. I also keep it doubled bag in plastic, so air doesn't harden the glue in the bottle. The new cover/top is a great improvement. |
Question: | What is the difference in this "white" gorilla glue versus the original which dries white |
Answer: | This glue also dries white |

Product description
Question: | Will this glue work on wood that is not completely cured and still slightly damp |
Answer: | I don't recommend using this product. Epoxy based glue works better. |
Question: | Does it work on rope |
Answer: | Clear, pale yellow. |
Question: | can i use this glue on leather book binding |
Answer: | I've used this glue to bond different things to one another, but not things that needed to stay together under stress; I'd recommend a test to see how strong the bond would be. So, it's a matter of trying, in my opinion. |
Question: | Can I use gorilla glue with polyurethane to seal a thin crack in a pipe |
Answer: | No. You may use clear silicon sealant instead. It is often used to glue aquarium panels together. Home Depot, Lowes, Ace all have it in squeeze tubes or cartridges. |
