14 best glue for leathers

Glue for leather, often referred to as leather adhesive or contact cement, is a specialized adhesive used for bonding leather materials. This type of adhesive is designed to create strong, flexible, and durable bonds suitable for various leatherworking and repair applications. Here's what you should know about glue for leather:

  1. Purpose: Leather glue is primarily used for bonding leather pieces together, attaching leather to other materials (such as fabric or wood), and making repairs to leather goods like shoes, belts, bags, and leather furniture.

  2. Types of Leather Adhesives:

    • Water-Based Leather Glue: Water-based leather adhesives are environmentally friendly and have a mild odor. They are suitable for many leather bonding applications but may not provide the same level of durability as solvent-based adhesives.
    • Solvent-Based Leather Cement: Solvent-based leather cements are known for their strong and long-lasting bonds. They are commonly used in professional leatherworking and repairs. These adhesives typically have a stronger odor and should be used in a well-ventilated area.
    • Spray Adhesives: Some leather adhesives are available in spray form, making them convenient for large leather projects or when an even coating is needed.
  3. Application: Leather glue is typically applied to both surfaces that need to be bonded. It is essential to allow the adhesive to become tacky before pressing the leather pieces together. This ensures a strong and secure bond.

  4. Drying Time: The drying time for leather adhesive can vary depending on the type and brand of glue. Some adhesives dry quickly, while others may require more time to set completely. It's essential to follow the manufacturer's instructions regarding drying times.

  5. Flexibility and Durability: Leather glue is formulated to remain flexible even after drying, which is crucial for maintaining the integrity of leather items. It should also provide a durable bond that can withstand the stresses and movements associated with leather goods.

  6. Color Matching: Some leather glues dry clear, while others may have a color tint. It's important to choose an adhesive that matches the color of the leather to ensure a seamless finish.

  7. Heat Resistance: Depending on the intended use, it's essential to consider the heat resistance of the adhesive. For applications where leather items may be exposed to high temperatures, a heat-resistant leather adhesive may be necessary.

  8. Storage: Properly sealing the container of leather adhesive is important to prevent it from drying out or becoming unusable over time. Store the adhesive in a cool, dry place.

  9. Safety Precautions: When working with solvent-based leather adhesives, it's crucial to use them in a well-ventilated area and follow safety precautions to minimize exposure to fumes.

In summary, glue for leather, including water-based and solvent-based varieties, is specially formulated for bonding leather materials. It offers flexibility, durability, and a strong bond, making it essential for leatherworking projects and repairs. Proper application and consideration of factors like drying time, color matching, and heat resistance are key to achieving successful results when working with leather adhesive.

User questions & answers

Question: How does this compare to aleene's leather & suede glue? i need to glue two pieces of leather together
Answer: The packaging says it's "Great for: weather stripping, car doors, windows, leather goods, shoe repair." And "Ready to use for: rubber, wood, leather, glass, cork, metal, etc." On the back: "This product contains ethylbenzene and formaldehyde which are chemicals known to the state of California to cause cancer." I have not used it for anything except leather work and to bond shoe soles back to the shoe. I suspect it would melt styrofoam though I don't know that for a fact.
Question: can I use this product to attach a diabetic alert patch to a small leather gun carry bag
Answer: It will bond a half sole, but I am uncertain how well it will stand up to the moisture or wetness it might encounter on a boot.
Question: I am wanting to attach an old watch face to a leather keychain as a sentimental gift. Would this allow for the leather to stick to those surfaces
Answer: 2 oz size will be plenty for one boot.
Question: Is it flexible? I need to glue snakeskin back to fabric on the shoe in the bend area. Will it crack
Answer: I've never actually used it on leather, but I feel certain that it would work. I use it primarily to glue the soles back on my grandsons shoes. It works great, but it's very important that the glued surfaces be clean, dry and that the glue be spread evenly on both glued surfaces and then well clamped. Also, don't be in a hurry. It says to spread the glue on both surfaces, and then wait for about ten minutes; DO wait those few minutes before contact is made. After the surfaces are mated, clamp it evenly and tight. I use wooden blocks and C-clamps to spread the load. Then leave it clamped for 24 full hours.

User questions & answers

Question: Does it dry clear? I want to fix snake leather tear on the shoe. Will it stay? If not, any other products to suggest
Answer: It dries clear, but I have not used it to mend tears in Fabric.
Question: Assuming the the top is closed properly, does it dry out if used infrequently
Answer: Though I have not tried that it certainly should work!
Question: Will it work to repair Muck boots
Answer: Can't remember how fast it works, just that I did not like it. When dried, feels rubbery. Much prefer the regular fabric fusion.
Question: would it work well for putting a woven sports patch on a jacket
Answer: I wouldn't use it for that application, because of the weight. However, I may have an answer for you. I had the same problem with a bimini top on my boat. Unless you have access to a heavy duty sewing machine you can't stitch it either. Here's what I did. Take an awl or small phillips screw driver, hold the material together and make a small hole in both sides. Now, install an aluminum pop rivet with a washer on both surfaces. This requires a little patience, but , my canvas top has been in place for four years, at speeds of up to 45 mph. This is not as unattractive as you might think, and is very effective. Good luck!

Boot-Fix Shoe Glue: Instant Professional Grade Shoe Repair Glue

Boot-Fix

Based on 6 reviews Check latest price

Product description

"Boot-Fix's Shoe Glue is a flexible super glue that works almost instantly on footwear! As my dad used to say "If the shoe fits, Glue It!" Even the famous Gorilla Glue and Shoe Goo can't compare with Boot-Fix Shoe Glue when it comes to re-attaching the soles and heels of your favorite boots, shoes, and sandals. The flexible super glue formula was specially created just for repairing footwear. Whether it's in the blistering summer heat or icy cold of winter, boot-fix glue is designed to hold. Most super glues dry rigidly and can take several minutes or more to fully cure. Boot-Fix Glue dries clear and flexible! Whether you need to glue your boots for a hard day's work, a tough day of training, or just a walking around the office, Boot-Fix Glue can repair your work boots, athletic sneakers, and your rubber soled dress shoes." - John Hnilica, Founder NJOY Distributors, LLC.

  • Not just regular "super glue"! It's what the professionals use. We know, because we've been doing shoe repair for three generations!
  • Professional strength and flexible shoe glue that bonds almost instantly with no clamping! Doesn't expand or dry thick like the other leading brands.
  • Re-attach your sole with confidence because unlike other shoe glues, Boot-Fix's shoe glue creates a flexible bond unaffected by heat, cold or moisture.
  • Formulated to use on all footwear materials, especially rubber and vinyl footwear where other glues fail, including boots, athletic shoes, climbing shoes, dress shoes and more.
  • Specifically formulated to create a lasting bond that stays strong so you can have confidence in repairing your shoes yourself.

User questions & answers

Question: Does anybody have the data sheet on this stuff i'm looking for something that will withstand high temp 160 to 170 F or 77c.I want to patch a car seat
Answer: I would just call an auto upholstery company local to you and see what they recommend.
Question: Why 3x$ compared to other super glue formulas? Enough to coat the soles of two boots and or other separated layers? Why such a little bottle
Answer: Thank you for your question. Boot-Fix retails for $9.95 but is $14.45 Prime to cover the cost of shipping. Boot-Fix is much stronger than regular super glues and contains an additive to keep the cyanoacrylate flexible when it dries. The formula and manufacturing process was intended for the shoe repair industry so you are getting the best of the best professional grade shoe repair glue. Boot-Fix contains 20 grams of adhesive and will last about 2 years. There is enough glue in the bottle to repair up to 10 boots or 15 shoes. Compare that to the $24 we charge to make the same repair in our shops. Thanks again. Hope that helps!
Question: Will it reattach running show soles that became completely detached from the upper soon after first use? New old stock shoes. Apply to entire sole
Answer: I'm certain it will. My boots I bought this glue for were DrMartens. The fabric mesh style. And sadly it this glue wasn't useful with fabric. I used the glue for my other old England original DrMartens and it worked perfectly well. Also used this glue (out of curiosity) for other projects and it worked so well. So besides fabric....This boot glue fix worked on every other project.
Question: Is this just like "krazy/super glue" only packaged for shoes at a higher price, meaning might as well just use the cheaper version? or is this better
Answer: Shoe-Fix and Boot-Fix are LIKE Krazy Glue or super glues, because it is a cyanoacrylate formula. BUT, Shoe-Fix and Boot-Fix have been specifically formulated for the shoe repair industry to bond to all types of materials used in today's footwear and remain flexible after curing to hold as long as possible. Regular super glues dry hard and would crack apart and break during shortly after use. We are professional shoe repairmen! We've been using this type of shoe glue in our two Florida shops for over twenty years and thought it was time for the retail market to be able to use the same glue we do - so here it is!!!

Product features

THE BOOT-FIX DIFFERENCE:

Boot-Fix is a super glue (cyanoacrylate) that is specifically formulated for the shoe repair industry.  We know because we’ve been using this type of glue in our shoe repair shops for almost 30 years now and we think we’ve found the best formula yet!  Boot-Fix Glue is the strongest footwear adhesive that works on all different types of shoe materials. What makes Boot-Fix Glue different from your average super glue?  Boot-Fix remains flexible after it dries so it doesn’t just break apart again when the footwear is worn.  Also, it’s viscosity has been specifically formulated to bond to the types of materials used to manufacture footwear these days. Unlike other shoe glues, Boot-Fix doesn’t require clamping for most repairs.  It’s ready to go in minutes, not hour or even days. Boot-Fix Glue is completely waterproof and it’s designed to hold even in the blistering summer heat, or icy cold of winter. Whether you need to glue your boots for a hard day's work, a tough day of training, or just a walking around the office, Boot-Fix Glue can repair your work boots, athletic sneakers, rubber soled dress shoes, and much more!. As my dad used to say “If the shoe fits, Glue It!”

HOW TO USE:
HELPFUL TIPS:

*  Have a tri-folded paper towel handy to wipe off any excess glue.

*  For completely detached soles, preset sole to desired position and hold. Repeat above steps to the toe or heel first, then repeat for opposite end until entire sole is attached.

*  If there’s a white film on the surface of the material, or if the footwear has been washed or exposed to soapy substances, you will need to use more Boot-Fix and apply more pressure for a longer period of time to allow for the adhesive to soak through the film and bond to the intended materials.

*  For porous materials, use Boot-Fix as described in the directions.  If the bond does not hold after 1 minute, simply repeat the steps again with more glue now that the porous material has been filled with some glue. This repair might also require more pressure for a longer period of time for the adhesive to work as intended.

*  Latex or other types of gloves are not required to use Boot-Fix and may get glued to your footwear accidently. We recommend doing the repairs carefully with your bare hands. If you do accidently get Boot-Fix on your skin, apply cooking oil to bonded areas and gently rub to peel bond apart.

*  Store Boot-Fix in a cool dry place or refrigerator and ensure the cap clicks shut when closing for longest life.

User questions & answers

Question: What to use to remove glue from hands
Answer: I would not recommend what you suggest. This adhesive needs to be absorbed into a porous material like leather to adhere. Metals, glass and many plastics are not porous enough to get good adhesion. A urethane adhesive like gorilla glue would be a better choice.
Question: how do you keep the cap from becoming glued shut
Answer: It should remain quite flexible in thin sections such as your snakeskin. Make certain the area to be glued is clean and dry and wipe off any excess glue.

User questions & answers

Question: A liter is a big quantity to use up. What's the base of this? Do you have to use the branded thinner? How about turpentine
Answer: I use an acetone for clean up and for thinning if necessary.
Question: Would this glue Plexiglass to Rubber
Answer: barge is a contact cement. Stick it on each surface and let it dry about ten minutes, then stick the two pieces together. Wait overnight. Do it with two small pieces first. See what happens. I think any adhesive is going to rely on how much pressure you put on its performance down the road.
Question: Will this work for gluing leather to wood
Answer: Hmmm, haven't tried that application but would guesstimate it would as long as the wood to which the leather will be adhered is roughed up a bit with a file or some such.
Question: Will this be a good option for gluing a fabric/embroidered patch onto a leather shoe
Answer: Indeed it will. It's excellent for gluing the entire sole of the shoe back on if and when it delaminates. I get an extra 8 months out of running or athletic shoes using barge which is a contact cement. I like the applicator in the can. If the lid gets sticky clean it with actone. Apply to both surfaces and wait 20 mins. then stick it together. If I'm gluing soles back on, I use a clamp. It is great for regular leather as well. Be sparing on the patch with the amount you use.
