13 best wood waterproofings
Wood waterproofing refers to the process of treating wood surfaces to make them resistant to water, moisture, and the effects of weathering. This is essential for protecting wooden structures, furniture, and outdoor items from damage and decay due to exposure to water and humidity. Here are some key points about wood waterproofing:
Types of Wood Waterproofing Products: There are various products and methods available for waterproofing wood, including:
Wood Sealers: These products create a protective barrier on the wood's surface, preventing water penetration while allowing the wood to breathe. They come in clear and tinted varieties.
Wood Stains with Sealant: Some wood stains include built-in sealants that not only enhance the wood's appearance but also provide waterproofing properties.
Waterproofing Paints: Waterproof paints are specially formulated to repel water and provide a durable, protective finish for wooden surfaces.
Wood Preservatives: Wood preservatives contain chemicals that protect against decay, rot, and insect damage while also offering some waterproofing benefits.
Oil-Based Sealants: Oil-based sealants, such as linseed oil or tung oil, can be applied to wood surfaces to provide protection against moisture.
Epoxy Coatings: Epoxy coatings create a strong, waterproof barrier on wood surfaces and are commonly used for marine applications and outdoor furniture.
Preparation: Proper preparation is crucial for effective wood waterproofing. This typically involves cleaning the wood surface to remove dirt, debris, and any previous coatings. Sanding may be necessary to create a smooth surface for the waterproofing product to adhere to.
Application: The method of application depends on the chosen waterproofing product. It can include brushing, rolling, spraying, or dipping. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for the specific product being used.
Number of Coats: Most wood waterproofing products require multiple coats for optimal protection. Each coat should be allowed to dry thoroughly before applying the next one.
Maintenance: Regular maintenance is essential to ensure the continued effectiveness of the waterproofing treatment. Over time, wood surfaces may require reapplication of the waterproofing product to maintain their water-resistant properties.
Indoor vs. Outdoor Use: Some wood waterproofing products are designed specifically for outdoor applications where wood is exposed to rain, sun, and other weather conditions. Others are suitable for indoor use, where protection against water and moisture is still necessary but without exposure to harsh weather.
Environmental Considerations: When choosing a wood waterproofing product, consider the environmental impact and safety. Some products may contain volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and other chemicals that can be harmful to the environment and human health.
UV Protection: In addition to repelling water, some wood waterproofing products offer UV protection to prevent wood from fading and deteriorating due to exposure to sunlight.
Compatibility: Ensure that the chosen waterproofing product is compatible with the type of wood you are treating and any previous finishes or coatings.
In summary, wood waterproofing is essential for protecting wood surfaces from water damage, decay, and deterioration. Choosing the right waterproofing product, proper preparation, and regular maintenance are key to preserving the beauty and longevity of wood items and structures.

User questions & answers
Question: | Can nylon bristle paint brushes be used to put on oil stain on wood |
Answer: | It would depend on the project, but initially to answer your question - Yes. If you are staining any project, please remember, it's not what you apply the stain with, it's the finished product. Stain needs to be applied by an applicator. If its a small craft item or a large item or even a huge project like a deck, its important to remember the basics, Its not the applicator, its the way you wipe off the excess stain with a rag to eliminate brush bristles, brush strokes and excess stain. I actually stained a 20 x 27' deck using a 4 inch nylon brush, and aside from it taking forever, and throwing the brush out after staining. I wiped the deck down (aprox every row with a rag and it looks beautiful) for future advice: buy a deck pad it delivers stain more evenly, doesn't leave brush bristles, and takes a third of the time. Hope this Helps & Happy Staining ! |
Question: | Does this work great for thompson waterseal |
Answer: | Yes |
Question: | How do you effectively clean this brush so that it can be used again please |
Answer: | I use 2 canning jars. Fill 1 with mineral spirits or alcohol and place the put into it removing as much stain as possible I then fill the 2and jar with very hot water with dish detergent and place the paint brush from the mineral spirits or alcohol into the hot soapy water and let soak until clean |
Question: | Can I use this for applying polyurethane to hardwood floor |
Answer: | in theory you can.......... it will take a lot of time considering you have to do a minimum of 3 coats to obtain a proper finish. Polyurethane is applied by working into a wet edge. You'll kill yourself trying to keep up so you don't end up with a bunch of streaks and brush marks. look at video on youtube "applying polyureethane on hardwood floors" to see the proper, quick and efficient way of doing it. Not to mention you'll save your back and knees. |

User questions & answers
Question: | How effective is this compared to other wood preservative products--green/brown/copper stains--you have used for wood touching ground |
Answer: | It is not as effective as tinted products. I apply it every year, and it seems to have extended the life of my 22-year-old cedar deck. It's not great, but I think that's the cost of using a clear product. The deck gets a lot of snow. And there is one area that never sees the sun. Those boards never get to dry completely, and 2 of them needed to be replaced after about 20 years. Those that do get some sun are still solid. |
Question: | Can I use this to coat wooden clipboards to protect from liquids |
Answer: | Thompsons Water Seal will protect anything made of wood. Just paint the TWS on with a brush and let dry for 24 hours and apply a second coat. Make sure you coat the edges really well also. |
Question: | What is product sheen ? I want a matte / satin when dried. This is for cedar posts on a covered deck, doesn't see much sun or rain. Thanks |
Answer: | Not too much sheen. Great product for our fence. |
Question: | Is this appropriate for ground-contact Douglas Fir for kids sandbox/playset? Trying to avoid pressure-treated and the cost of redwood if possible |

For exterior use only. To avoid overexposure, if treating enclosed exterior rooms or porches, open windows and doors or use other means to ensure fresh air entry during application and drying. User questions & answers
Question: | Can this be applied to damp wood? How would it be on raised garden beds |
Answer: | I wouldn't recommend it. Even applying to untreated bare wood it started peeling and flaking after less than one year. Damp wood would certainly lead to bubbling before long. |
Question: | Is this solid, or semi-transparent? Title says solid. But description and product image show semi-transparent |
Answer: | Solid, worked nice but had to put two coats to really cover good. |
Question: | So is this 1gallon or 16 gallons? I’ve seen a similar question but I wanna be sure |
Answer: | One (1) gal. 1-gallon. |
Question: | In the description, it says 16 gallon. What size is it |
Answer: | I got 16 gallons! It took 3 UPS guys to deliver it to me. Cheaper than drinking water! |

User questions & answers
Question: | The listing says semi-transparent, but the picture says transparent, which version is this |
Answer: | Semi |
Question: | Is this a gallon container of the product |
Answer: | Yes this is a one gallon of Thompson water seal |
Question: | what clear seal do you recommend to use on 12year old pressure treated planks |
Answer: | I've used Thompson's water-based semi-transparent stain/sealer 3 times now for my 15 year-old pressure-treated deck and it has always done a great job of covering and protecting the wood. It doesn't really last the 4 years they claim, but still very good. They also make an oil-based clear sealer and I use that on my cedar pergola, also very good stuff but it's hard to work with because it doesn't cleanup with water. As an alternative to the oil-base they have an all-purpose water-based clear sealer for wood and masonry. I would use that on my pergola if it was made of pressure treated wood, but with cedar I really want a penetrating oil. So for your pressure treated deck, I would recommend the water-based clear sealer. Given how well the semi-transparent stain has worked for me, I would expect good results with the clear as well. You will certainly want to clean the wood first if you expect to brighten the gray appearance of aged wood. I spray oxygen bleach on the wood first and then scrub with a stiff brush and rinse before sealing. |
Question: | Would this product work well on untreated Adirondack furniture |
Answer: | Yes, I think it would be suitable. I have only used it on my deck however. Good protection in a wet climate. Rub it down well after it dries to keep the color from getting on clothes though if you're using a color stain. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this suitable to use on treated lumber |
Answer: | The directions for some such as Thompson's Water Seal specify pressure-treated wood as a suitable use. |
Question: | Would this good for a shed |
Answer: | This works great for anything you want to protect from wetness and from sun damage. I have used it on my deck, a wood retaining wall and 400 feet of solid wood 6 foot high fence. Tried others and they don't do the job, especially the sun damage. Also if you set the can in the sun on a pretty warm day you can use a weed sprayer to apply it. If it isn't fairly warm it stays too thick to spray so you have to roll it on or use a paint brush. Good luck |
Question: | Is this product expired?. Because in home depot all thomson 5gl clear paints are expired |
Answer: | They are changing from chemical base to water base so it is less toxic. That is also why it does not spray unless you let it heat up, but it does the same job. |
Question: | Is this product oil or water based, please? someone mentioned that thompson was changing to water based, so i am confused. thanks |
Answer: | This is oil based. Clean up brushes with paint thinner. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can I paint over this sealer |
Answer: | It’s very oily. I would say no |
Question: | Is it safe to use where food will be grown |
Answer: | Obviously not meant to be applied to soil. I assume you mean to wood nearby ? Probably OK once dried. Don't apply where heavy rain is imminent and runoff would be to food growing soil. |
Question: | does this go on as a clear coat or does it stain the wood a different colo?r |
Answer: | It does stain the wood a different color |
Question: | How much area will one spray can cover |
Answer: | I did one side of a wrought iron man gate with wood slats. There was only 1/4 can left. Just FYI. The color is not attractive and it doesn’t apply evenly. |

Question: | Can you apply with a typical garden sprayer |
Answer: | I think you can. I used an electric sprayer and it worked just fine. Good luck! |
User questions & answers
Question: | would this qualify for current Behr 's rebates |
Answer: | Find out yourself, will not do research for you. |
Question: | Is this oil-based or water-based |
Answer: | Yes it’s oil based. I used this brand last year to waterproof my deck. According to the instructions it’s good for two years before I can waterproof it again. It’s working great so far. One of things I noticed, when the summer is over , if you have any grilling mats on the deck take them up because of the rain, snow and the cold will remove or damage the waterproofing. |

Question: | Could this be used on an exterior door to help with swelling from humidity? If so how to apply |

Question: | Can the protector be applied on damp wood |
Answer: | I think not. |
Question: | Will this work on outdoor mahogany floor |
Answer: | Yes will protect it |
Question: | Hello, Do you have to re-apply every year |
Answer: | Probably. To tell, splash some water on the finish. If the water forms bubbles, the surface is OK for another season. However, after a year the surface may look dirty, and so you may want to clean it and re-seal it. Again, after you clean the surface, splash some water on it and see whether the previous seal still holds. |
