Reproducing an object can be time-consuming, tedious, and error-prone. The SOL 3D scanner and software allows you to easily create a replica of objects using six simple steps:

1. Scan the object using the SOL 3D scanner with included software.
2. Review your scan in the SOL Viewer.
3. Export in one of the supported formats: OBJ, STL, XYZ, DAE, and PLY files.
4. Import your scan into your slicer software (such as Slic3r, Simplify3D, and Cura) for evaluation and any clean-up required.

Scan-to-Model

Answer:	Yes, you can use it to scan a face by walking around the person. Note that it can't scan hair at all, so you'll only get the skin. And (at least on the Pro) you need to move it with the smooth slow motion of a tai-chi master or else it will lose tracking, which requires you to back up and hold-still for it to recover. Recovering tracking seems to get harder and harder as a scan progresses (more points?) and at some point I always just give up. When it works the results are truly amazing! But it's a serious pain in the butt to use.

Question:	I am looking to purchase a 3D printer as a gift for a beginner. Does anyone have any recommendations? Thank you
Answer:	My son is 15 and he handpicked this one as a gift. He doesn’t know that I’ve purchased it, but he was very adamant that this was the best one. If the recipient is very technically inclined, I think it would be a great fit. I’ve read tons of reviews and watched several on YouTube. Once it’s properly assembled ( does seem to take some time), then operation is suitable for a beginner (again, must be very technically inclined). My son did request a different type of filament that I also purchased on Amazon, because the included roll isn’t that great. I don’t remember which one I purchased, but it was about 20.00. He also suggested getting or building a table to sit it on, as you should not sit it directly on the floor. He’s making one to put beside his desk, but I’m sure any small table would do. I’m very excited myself to see it in action, but I guess I’ll have to wait until Christmas.

Answer:	It is very straightforward, but the downloadable PDF instructions leave a lot to be desired. I highly recommend using the top-rated "how to build" video, along with the PDF. Answer:	Frankly, the BEST thing you can do is contact them and take a tutorial class. More than likely, you will be the only person in the class. They can help you solve that issue.
Question:	Can someone please post online an stl of a common household item they scanned with this scanner? like a pair of glasses or a fork or
Answer:	Neither of those objects would scan properly unfortunately. The clear lenses of the glasses and the reflectivity of the fork would destroy the scan. Shiny opaque plastic won’t even work properly. You either have to sand the shine off, or matte the surface completely with powder or paint.
Question:	How easily can you take multiple scans and combine them? I have relatively complex injection molded parts with holes, etc. and I need to capture them
Answer:	The MFStudio software for the scanner will automatically combine your scans, but to capture complex injected molded parts with through-holes and bosses and similar features often requires a hand-held scanner to get into the deeper areas. The Matter and Form V2 scanner can definitely capture the overall shape of such a part, but it will have difficulty capturing into holes and into deep crevasses.

Question:	is it easy to scan a person with out using something that rotates the person
Answer:	It's going to be hard. Scanner picks up other objects in the vicinity. You need a rotating base, or you need to walk around the person and be 70cm or 14 inches away from them at all type. The cord is not long enough, so you needs to use a Microsoft surface tablet or laptop with Intel core i5 cpu.

Question:	What is your personal use for this device? Because I want one, but I am trying to make it very practical for myself
Answer:	I got it to have more fun with the 3d printers. A friend scanned my bust and I printed a 1.5" tall head that is recognizable. I also scanned a phone in an attempt to make a case. It got the general shape, but I had quite a bit of tinkercad editing to get it to the actual size. There are better scanners for items who's size is critical. But they are small and the least expensive ones cost starts at double. The XYZ is more for capturing emotional things like for art, gaming or general ideas. Not for reproducing mechanically exact, and functional items. Sometime this week I will be scanning a small Gundam model, and try to reprint it. I haven't really found a practical use for it, but it is a lot of fun.

Question:	What version is the board
Answer:	The newest version of the board is 1.1.5, it does not come with the printer though. Mine came with 1.1.4 which is very similar to the 1.1.3. Creality Sells the 1.1.5 separately right now as the Creality v1.1.5 Silent Main Board. It is $50 bucks and you might find it cheaper but it is a worthwhile upgrade. It has newer stepper drivers that make the stepper motors virtually silent. I can't hear them anymore only the fans now. The board also has thermal runaway enabled and has a boot loader preinstalled so if you wanted to switch to Vanilla Marlin or the TH3D software you could do so very easily. Installing this board and the TH3D software also made adding a BL Touch kit easy.

Question:	What is the physical footprint of this unit
Answer:	The actual base footprint itself requires a flat 12" x 12" surface, however certain parts such as the display panel overhang requiring a bit more space. A roughly 16" wide by about 20" deep space should be about right, although you will want to make sure both the back and front have an additional few inches to spare as the bed does move back and forth during operation. I mount mine on top of a 16" x 18" patio paver block for support and stability. I place the paver block over some dense foam that is cut about 1" in from the block edge (14" x 16"). This gives the printer a platform that helps contribute mass to absorb vibrations as well as offer a bid of noise reduction cause by sound transmission through the base. Placed a few inches from the back wall it also ensures the printer travel area remains clear. There is also YouTube video on using this technique if interested (not mine but I came across it after I came up with the same idea separately).

Answer:	It does come with a very old version of Cura. The lastest version of Cura is what I am using. Just download it from https://ultimaker.com/en/products/ultimaker-cura-software/list. If all you are doing is downloading models and printing this is all you need. If you want to make your own 3D models that complicates things. There are many, many 3d modeling programs and which one to use is a very personal choice and each takes time to learn to use. Blender is free, Sketch-up is also I think. But there are commercial programs that can cost up to a couple of thousand to use. Zbrush, Studio Max, and others. Answer:	There is no lighting inside the box. A small hole is provided in the top of the box for the camera. The hole may need to be enlarged to accommodate the flash. A couple of strips are provided to act as a guide for aligning the camera once you have aligned your cell camera to get a good pic. I find that getting good alignment leaves something to be desired. I bought a couple of small LED lights to mount on the top inside of the box for good lighting. Painted the bottom with flat black spray paint to prevent glare.
