12 best cylinder bore tools
Cylinder bore tools, also known as cylinder honing tools, are specialized tools used in machining and engine rebuilding processes. These tools are designed to precisely finish and smooth the interior surface of a cylinder bore, which is the cylindrical hole in an engine block where the piston moves. Here's what you should know about cylinder bore tools:
Purpose: Cylinder bore tools are used to improve the surface finish and size of cylinder bores in engines. This is crucial for maintaining proper engine performance and ensuring a tight seal between the piston rings and the cylinder wall.
Types of Cylinder Bore Tools:
Honing Stones: Honing stones are abrasive tools that are attached to a honing machine. They have abrasive grains embedded in them and are used to remove material from the cylinder bore while creating a crosshatch pattern for better lubrication and piston ring seating.
Honing Machines: Honing machines are specialized equipment used for automated or manual honing. They hold and move the honing stones in a controlled manner to achieve the desired bore size and surface finish.
Honing Oil: Honing oil is a lubricant used in the honing process to reduce friction and heat generation. It also helps to flush away metal particles generated during honing.
Benefits:
Improved Cylinder Surface: Cylinder bore tools can create a smoother and more uniform cylinder surface, which enhances engine performance and longevity.
Precise Sizing: They allow for precise control over the bore size, ensuring that it meets the engine manufacturer's specifications.
Crosshatch Pattern: Honing creates a crosshatch pattern on the cylinder wall, which helps retain oil and promotes proper piston ring seating.
Applications:
Cylinder bore tools are commonly used in engine rebuilding and maintenance, especially for automotive and motorcycle engines.
They can also be used in industrial applications where precision cylinder bores are required, such as hydraulic cylinders.
Materials: Cylinder bore tools are typically made from high-quality materials that can withstand the abrasive nature of honing. The honing stones themselves are made with abrasive materials like silicon carbide or aluminum oxide.
Process:
The honing process involves inserting the tool into the cylinder bore and moving it back and forth while applying honing oil. This action removes material and creates the desired surface finish.
The process may be repeated with progressively finer abrasive stones until the desired bore size and finish are achieved.
Safety: Proper safety precautions, including wearing safety glasses and gloves, are essential when using cylinder bore tools, as the process generates metal particles and can be hazardous.
Maintenance: Regular maintenance of the tools is important to ensure their longevity and performance. This includes cleaning, inspecting, and replacing worn honing stones.
In conclusion, cylinder bore tools are essential for maintaining and rebuilding engines by improving the surface finish and size of cylinder bores. They play a crucial role in ensuring engine performance and longevity by creating precise, smooth, and well-lubricated cylinder surfaces.

User questions & answers
Question: | Please confirm if this is internal |
Answer: | Probably, but telescopic gages depend a bit on user technique, so practice with a known bore. Also, it is necessary to rock the gage in the bore to find the minimum diameter, so the reach will be less than the handle length. More expensive gages have smoother action and should be more precise, but +/-0.001 is achievable. |
Question: | I'm interested in measuring shotgun bores and their chokes to within 0.001": will this set work |
Answer: | they come in a light weight soft side plastic case. they need to be stored where things can't get put on top of them. |
Question: | What sort of case do they come in |
Answer: | They have a spring that works to extend the arms and you tighten the threaded locking device on the end of the handle when the two arms are at the narrowest point. It takes a feel to get the exact. You try to tighten the just tight enough while at an angle in the hole that they won't extend but can still be pushed in by you moving the tool to and then past it's shortest point the theoretical diameter of the hole and then getting the lock tightened while this is happening. Then you use a mircrometer to measure across the two arms. These anytime tool ones are not the greatest. They work but are touchy at best. If you can, pick up the mitutoyo or starrett versions. http://www.amazon.com/Starrett-S579HZ-Centering-Telescoping-Gauge/dp/B00008IHTK/ref=sr_1_2?s=industrial&ie=UTF8&qid=1410299940&sr=1-2&keywords=TELESCOPIC+GAUGEhttp://www.amazon.com/Mitutoyo-155-905-150mm-Piece-Telescoping/dp/B001OBX2GS/ref=sr_1_12?s=industrial&ie=UTF8&qid=1410299940&sr=1-12&keywords=TELESCOPIC+GAUGE |
Question: | DO THEY ADJUST WHITH A SPRING OR WHITH THREADS |
Answer: | Doubtful. If the material is soft enough to cut that far with a hone, the hone will probably load up and stop cutting long before you remove 1/8". If the material is hard, you'll be at it for a long, long time, if it ever gets there. Best to enlarge the hole with something else, such as a reamer, and finish the last few thousandths with the hone. |

Answer: | Note : There are 2 empty anvil spots because 1 anvil is already installed in the foot and the largest spot is intentionally left empty. |
Question: | Is this tool made in USA |
Answer: | read the details it just depnds on what your using it for i.e. more precise is what i took from the details hope that helps |
Question: | What is the difference between this item and the one named "Extender Bore Gauge |
Answer: | The shaft is approximately 7" long. You won't be able to measuere cam bearings from the fron and it will probably be too long to measure them between the webs of the block. I reccomend a standard internal mike or one that is extended. now for the cylinders, this works every bit as good as the big $$$ ones. Hope that helpls. |
Question: | How long is the shaft? Is that a shaft extension that is included? trying to measure installed cam bearings |
Answer: | It's a a "dial" bore gage. Calibration is only checking for dial repeatability & damage. It is checked for size with standards at each setup. No previous calibration required. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will i need an oversize piston? If so how many mm overbore is it |
Answer: | I recommend using the same engine oil that will be used in the engine once completed. Of course it will be washed away when cleaning up but its one less chemical variance to introduce when engine building. |
Question: | What lubricant should I use with it while honing |
Answer: | Definitely very fine grit. I'd compare it to a 1200-1500 that you'd use for wet sanding. |
Question: | What is the grit of the stones |
Answer: | y0uwillhavetouseaelectricdrillorbatterydrillmotorthathasachuck sotheanswerisyesusevariablespeeddrillmotor ifyouhavethedirectionsonbackofpackage andpowerbuilthonethereisaphoneno.tocall1-800-423-3598 ifneedmoreinfomationandtypeoflube |
Question: | Would I have to use a chuck drive |
Answer: | It should work just fine for that bore application. The hone is on a flexible shaft, thus with the variation in the abrasive material and the flex shaft, it will hone that diameter. These hones cut very well, so go light and fast on each pass to make sure you don't remove too much material (assuming an aluminum piston?). |

User questions & answers
Question: | What material are the stones made from |
Answer: | The flex hone size is supposed to match your bore size and if your bore falls between standard Flex-Hone sizes, the next larger standard Flex-Hone should be selected. Thus the 3" (76mm) is the correct size for a 75mm bore. You should also select the right grit for your application. You can determine this by visiting the Flex-Hone web site at www.brushresearch.com. |
Question: | What stone sets are compatible or where do we buy another set of 220 stones |
Answer: | Probably not. They are a tight fit for the bore size they are listed for. Buy the hone for 70mm and you will have better luck than trying to stuff the 3" hone in a 2.75" bore.http://www.amazon.com/70mm-Flex-Hone-Cylinder-Silicon-Carbide/dp/B002T0B0GC/ref=sr_1_3?m=A221LQEWFFVQAG&s=merchant-items&ie=UTF8&qid=1405513153&sr=1-3 |
