Answer: | The torque in a stepper motor is proportional to the current. For the motor in question, the max current is shown as 2A. The winding resistance is given as 1.4 ohms per phase which works out the 2.8 Volts (2 amps x 1.4 ohms). However, this is not the end of the story. In order to achieve the 2 amp rating once the motor is in motion, requires a much higher supply voltage than 2.8 Volts. This is because once the motor moves, it generates a internal voltage that subtracts from the supply voltage. Additionally, the motor winding inductance prevents the current from rising immediately. To counteract these two forces, you need to apply a much higher voltage to the motor to force the current to the desired level. Using a modern stepper driver that provides adjustable current limiting makes this easy. The overdrive voltage needed will depend on the maximum voltage that the driver can handle, the insulation breakdown voltage of the stepper motor, and the desired speed you need reach. A good starting point is 10 X the value obtained by looking at the the winding resistance and maximum current ratings. In this case 2.8V (see above). That would imply that an overdrive voltage of 28V would be reasonable to use. If you chose this voltage, make sure the stepper driver can handle it. Also make sure your power supply can supply the current. You can back this value down as needed if you don't have to run a very high speeds. Hope this helps you out. |
