However, the shaft is made of metal and the metal is hollowed inside. Then, there is super hard plastic inside the metal that receives the 1.5 inch screw. I tried to screw the knob back in and it does not go back in! So, now my piece is damaged, but I think hubby can remedy that. Weird, huh? I hope this helps!

Answer:	It would probably help, but I'm not sure how much. Air and moisture can easily escape through the top hatches, since they don't form a good seal when closed, and you definitely don't want to caulk them. Caulking at least would make it sturdier (it's a bit flimsy and the walls can pop out rather easily).
