Question:	How long does it take to dehydrate meat
Answer:	I agree with the other responses. We started dehydrating various foods years ago and have experience with a couple of the much cheaper units. The Excalibur 3900B was a huge move up. It really does dry dozens of pieces at a time. We tried apples, pears, and even experimented with summer squash and tomatoes. It is fast and works great. Organic apple chips with no additives at all - hard to beat! I didn't rank ALL of the choices either, but did quite a bit of research, too. It was well worth the purchase price for us.
Question:	I bought this to dehydrate chicken breast meat for my cats. The instruction booklet says to cook the chicken first. I thought I could use raw chicken
Answer:	Depending on how thick you slice the meat, you could reasonably put 4-5 lbs. A friend gave me two elk roasts that weighed in about 5 lbs. I sliced it on the thin side and used 8 trays. I had the butcher slice a 3.5 lb. beef roast and only used 5 trays. I spaced the heat about 1/4 in. between pieces. I hope this answers your query. Happy Dehydrating.
Question:	Is it safe for the dehydrator running over the nigh or in day when you need to pop out
Answer:	When I fill it with 25 pounds of peaches or apricots, it will take around 6 kWh to dry a batch that big using the Kill-a-watt meter. For most, that would cost about 60 cents to $1 for electricity. That is about 24 hours of drying time. It uses a lot of heat during the first several hours and tappers down as the food gets dryer and dryer. I also use it to make yogurt using 9 quart size jars. Since the milks is already at temperature and I am only running it at 115 degrees, it uses much less electricity. Vegetables like tomatoes and zucchini use a lot less electricity than doing fruit. In the fall, you can run it inside the house and it will add some heat and humidity to the house reducing slightly the amount of heat the furnace has to put out. That is a bigger factor if you have electric heat than if you have natural gas heat. This thing makes large batches of much better yogurt with less work than the toy yogurt makers that most people use.
