Answer:	Your assumption is correct, the center threaded shaft pushes on the CV axle shaft while the arms attached to the wheel studs pull the bearing hub off. Two opposing forces to get the job done without ruining your axle by beating it with a large hammer causing it to mushroom and therefore not allowing your axle nut to go back on.😉

Answer:	This puller is designed to pull the hubs on a tapered axle such as my 1949 Plymouth. However, if you can get it mounted on the hub it should work. This puller will develop a bunch more pressure that a standard 3 jaw puller. I know because I bent one before I broke down and bought this one. Once mount it worked with seemingly little effort.
