14 best fermentation jar for wine
A fermentation jar for wine, also known as a wine fermentation vessel or wine fermenter, is an essential piece of equipment used in the home brewing and winemaking process. These jars are designed specifically for fermenting grape juice or other fruit juices into wine. Here's what you need to know about fermentation jars for wine:
Purpose: The primary purpose of a fermentation jar for wine is to provide a controlled environment for the fermentation process. During fermentation, yeast consumes the sugars in the juice and converts them into alcohol and carbon dioxide. The fermentation jar holds the liquid and allows this process to occur.
Materials: Wine fermentation jars are typically made from food-grade materials such as glass, plastic, or stainless steel. Glass and plastic are the most common choices for home winemakers due to their transparency, allowing you to monitor the fermentation progress.
Airlock: Most wine fermentation jars come with an airlock or fermentation lock. This device allows carbon dioxide to escape from the jar while preventing oxygen and contaminants from entering. It helps maintain a sanitary and controlled fermentation environment.
Capacity: Fermentation jars come in various sizes, ranging from a few liters to several gallons. The size you choose depends on the quantity of wine you intend to produce.
Lid or Cover: The jar typically has a secure lid or cover to seal the container during fermentation. Some lids may have a small hole to accommodate the airlock.
Cleaning and Sanitizing: Proper cleaning and sanitizing of the fermentation jar are crucial to prevent contamination and off-flavors in the wine. Thoroughly clean and sanitize the jar before each use.
Temperature Control: Maintaining the right temperature during fermentation is important for producing high-quality wine. Some fermentation jars have insulating properties or come with temperature control accessories to help regulate the temperature of the fermenting wine.
Racking: After primary fermentation is complete, the wine is often transferred to another vessel through a process called racking. Some fermentation jars are designed with a spigot at the bottom for easy racking.
Secondary Fermentation: Some winemakers choose to transfer the wine to a secondary fermentation vessel to clarify and age the wine further. The choice of vessel for secondary fermentation can vary.
Monitoring: It's essential to monitor the fermentation process by taking regular gravity readings and checking for signs of completion. Transparent fermentation jars allow you to visually assess the wine's progress.
Aeration: During the early stages of fermentation, the wine may benefit from gentle aeration to encourage yeast activity. Some fermentation jars have built-in mechanisms for stirring or aerating the wine.
In summary, a fermentation jar for wine is a dedicated vessel designed to facilitate the fermentation process in winemaking. It provides a controlled environment, prevents contamination, and allows for easy monitoring of the fermentation progress. Choosing the right size and material for your fermentation jar is important for successful home winemaking.

Question: | what kide of glass? Borosilicat |
Answer: | Thanks for asking. These are not made of Borosilicate glass or tempered glass because they are not intended to be used under extreme temperatures. If you need that type of material, you will want to consider laboratory glass or that which is specifically described as resistant to thermal-shock. |
Question: | Can i make kombucha using this jar? Never done any fermenting before |
Answer: | You can certainly use the glass jars, but don't use the lid and airlock bubbler--kombucha needs a fresh air supply to ferment, so just cover jars with cheese cloth or a large coffee filter and use rubberbands or string to hold the cloth/filter on. You need an airlock to prevent fresh air from reaching things that are pickling, like suaerkraut. |

What Is The 3-piece Airlocks?
①Our 3-piece airlocks are made up of silicone grommet & the cup-shaped piece & airlock body & top cap
② The purpose of the airlock kit is to allow the CO2 out but not allow anything into the airlock.
The 3 piece airlocks keep mold and bacteria out.Airlocks are to create a air free seal within the mason jar
Notice: You can also use vodka in the airlock instead of water to limit bacterial growth
How do you use the three-piece airlock for fermentation?
Ⓐ Remove the cap, then full the half of the air lock with the water or vodka
Ⓑ Put the cap back on and insert the tip of the airlock with silicone grommet into the mason jar lid, bucket lid, carboy lid, etc. Make sure there is a tight seal
Ⓒ Gasses are released during the fermentation process. You will see bubbles forming and escaping through the water in the airlock
Ⓓ Airlocks prevent oxygen from entering the ferments. Oxygen will ruin the fermentation process

User questions & answers
Question: | What size hole do you need to make on the lid |
Answer: | I don't know why they say a 5/8" hole, that is the outside diameter of the grommet. I drilled a 1/2" hole on the side of a plastic milk bottle to see what size was needed and I used a 1/2" drill bit. Fit perfect. The grommet will fall through a 5/8" hole |
Question: | What are the advantages of these three-piece air locks compared to the S-type air locks |
Answer: | The airlocks work better then the S shaped airlocks because they are easier to clean. The water stops any unwanted and unsanitary bacteria from getting in. These fit our one gallon and our five gallon jugs. They are very easy to use . |
Question: | Will these work on a plastic bucket lid with the included grommets |
Answer: | Yes, that is how my husband uses them. They work great! |
Question: | Could I use this with a 2-liter growler |
Answer: | If you drill a 5/8" hole the hole in the growler it will be too big for these seals, unless the top is at least 1/2" thick, if not then you will need to use a drilled #3 stopper. These seals use a 1/2" hole for thin lids and metals. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this PVC |
Answer: | The tank is made of Tritan which is a medical grade polymer that is completely inert and can withstand temperatures unto 230F. |
Question: | How do you clean and sanitize the lid? Do you have to remove that gasket to effectively sanitize it |
Answer: | The removing the gasket is the easy part, getting the gasket back on while it's slippery from Sanitizer is the harder part. But seriously it's not anywhere as troublesome as trying to clean an old school carboy or sanitizing and using the autosiphon. I just flip the lid upside down with the bung in it, support it so it stays still and pool my sanitizer in it like a shallow bowl. |
Question: | Is it possible to use it to decant the trub after boiling the mash? Is it high temperature resistant |
Answer: | Ely F, This was a gift to my son in law, so here is his answer to your question.: But, yes it collects all the undesirables, he can’t add boiling liquid to it. He’d have to chill the mash to 70-75 degrees. The Catalyst will withstand the temperature from a dishwasher, but if they are asking if they can pour boiling hot wort into it, they should use a wort chiller before adding it to the Catalyst. 16 oz. mason jars are recommended for collecting the trub. After that, 8 oz jars are recommended for collecting yeast if they choose to reuse it for future batches. |
Question: | When you unscrew the mason jar, will it be completely full and spill everywhere |
Answer: | It can drip a bit. On YouTube on the CraftABrew channel there is a video that shows a demonstration. They place a small bowl under the mason jar to catch any excess. Expect the jar to be full, which is a good thing in terms of reducing gas in the headspace of the jar. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can these be used to keep food submerged under the fermentation liquid, like the glass weights do |
Answer: | These are very small and very lightweight. There is absolutely no comparison between these and glass weights when trying to ferment food. These are used to accommodate the air locks. A whole must be drilled in the top of a plastic lid and then the grommet can fit tightly and snugly, preventing any air from entering which would ruin the fermented food. Then, an airlock is placed in the opening, with a slight amount of water. The airlock has a cap with tiny wholes to allow the carbon dioxide to escape. Yes, a glass weight is necessary to hold the fermented food under the brine and away from any possible air. |
Question: | Will the silicone grommets get cut with metal lids, or are they of a thickness/material that won't get sliced into by a metal lid drilled hole edge |
Answer: | If the drilled hole is the size of the recessed center of the grommets then they should not move. However any moving part rubbing against a stationary part will over time likely deteriorate. Sometimes I use non-reactive sleeves around unlike metals to prevent electrolysis and corrosion. |
Question: | What are the min and max thickness of lids that this grommet can work with? (what are the dimension of the channel |
Answer: | The thickness of my lids (the Ball brand, for canning) are .75 inch thick. |
Question: | Do these grommets have a “lid” or “plug” to make the jar spill-proof |
Answer: | No. The whole purpose of these grommets is to create a small opening, just big enough for an airlock to fit snuggly, without letting in any air. This is necessary when fermenting. The lips hug the small opening on the lid that you either drill out or buy pre-drilled. It is not designed to be spill-proof at all, but to accommodate an airlock. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Once the fermentation process is complete, would I remove this lid and put a regular, wide mouth lid in its place |
Answer: | Once fermentation is complete there is no reason to keep venting process going. Place regular lid on jar and move to refrigerator. Wash venting lid parts in soapy water. |
Question: | Has anyone made kvass with these |
Answer: | https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6OsLi9mHeQs Different jar, but these will work. |
Question: | Would these lids work for making water kefir |
Answer: | Yes! they'd work for any fermentation process. |
Question: | Can these be used to make mead |
Answer: | They probably could... BUT you won't get carbonation built up in mead with these because any carbonation bubbles will escape through the top resulting in flat mead, beer, kombucha(I didn't get any carbonation), which is how I know. These lids are meant for fermented apple cider vinegar or fermented fruits and vegetables where fizz is not desired. They will keep ferments of these foods from exploding or oozing out of jar. I haven't made mead, but I presume you want it fizzy like beer, right? So, best bottles are Grosch beer brewing bottles. Lots of carbonation over several days if it takes as long as my kombucha does. Don't burp them either or fizz will go flat. Amazon has many vendors of these bottles. a Six pack of 15 oz bottles will cost between 14.00 and 18.00 for a box and they are perfect for fizziness. You can get different sizes as well, but I recommend short broad Grosch bottles because they fit easier in the fridge. Best of luck and hope this helped. maureen |
