14 best wort chillers
A wort chiller is an essential piece of equipment in the process of beer brewing, particularly for homebrewers. It plays a crucial role in cooling down the wort quickly after boiling. Here's what you need to know about wort chillers:
Purpose: The wort is the liquid extracted from the mashing process during beer brewing, and it needs to be rapidly cooled down after boiling to a temperature suitable for fermentation.Wort chillers are designed specifically for this purpose.
Types of Wort Chillers:
- Immersion Wort Chiller: This type of chiller consists of a coiled or straight copper or stainless steel tube. It is submerged directly into the boiling wort. Cold water flows through the chiller, absorbing heat from the hot wort, and exits at a higher temperature. Immersion chillers are relatively easy to use and are a popular choice for homebrewers.
- Counterflow Wort Chiller: Counterflow chillers have two coiled tubes: an inner tube through which hot wort flows in one direction and an outer tube through which cold water flows in the opposite direction. This design allows for efficient heat exchange and faster cooling of the wort. It's a more advanced but effective option.
Cooling Process: Wort chillers work on the principle of heat exchange. As the hot wort flows through the chiller, it transfers its heat to the cold water or coolant running through the chiller, rapidly lowering the wort's temperature.
Advantages:
- Rapid cooling helps to prevent the growth of unwanted microorganisms in the wort.
- It preserves the delicate flavors and aromas of the beer by reducing the risk of oxidation.
- Faster cooling can lead to clearer beer by facilitating the precipitation of proteins and hop particles.
Usage: After the boiling stage of beer brewing is complete, the wort chiller is typically placed in the boiling wort for the last 15-20 minutes of the boil. This helps sanitize the chiller. Then, it is connected to a water source and allowed to cool the wort to the desired fermentation temperature.
Cleaning and Maintenance: Wort chillers should be cleaned and sanitized before and after each use to prevent contamination of the beer. Cleaning can be done with a suitable cleaning solution, and sanitation is crucial to ensure the wort remains free from unwanted microorganisms.
Home Brewing: Wort chillers are particularly popular among homebrewers because they offer a convenient and efficient way to cool wort quickly. They are available in various sizes and designs to accommodate different batch sizes and budgets.
In summary, wort chillers are essential tools in the beer brewing process, helping brewers rapidly cool down the hot wort, which is a critical step in achieving the desired flavors and quality in the final beer. Whether you're a homebrewer or a commercial brewer, a wort chiller is a valuable piece of equipment for your brewing setup.

User questions & answers
Question: | How tall is it to the top of the coil |
Answer: | 16 inches tall |
Question: | I have a 5 gallon pot (10 inches high, 11 inches diameter). Would I be better off with a 25' coil or would this 50' coil work |
Answer: | I am no expert. I bought the larger coil because the price wasn't prohibitive. 50 will cool it faster. I use a 5 gallon pot. By the time you get to the cooling part, the 10 - 15 minutes or so you may save is worthwhile. Especially with a buzz on. :-) |
Question: | Could I connect this to a kitchen sink? I don't have access to an outdoor garden hose outlet. Any suggestions for adaptors, etc |
Answer: | Yes just but a 3/4 MNH x 1/2 MNPT adapter connect what they supplied to a sink or just buy a 1/2 threaded bard and replace the parts they sent |
Question: | Can it be used to heat water |
Answer: | Only if you’re able to pump hot water through the coil itself. (But if you have hot water to pump through the coil, why would you need to heat water?) |

User questions & answers
Question: | Would this be suitable for a 17" deep boiling pot being that the max height on this is 14"? Or should the cooler size match the pot size |
Answer: | It is totally fine if you are doing a 5 or 6 gallon batch. The 14" max height is liquid height inside the pot. |
Question: | What is the width of the coil |
Answer: | The 25' stainless chiller has a 6.75-Inch coil diameter, 6-inch coil height, 13. 5-Inch inlet/outlet height. It is not 10" like the other answer states. |
Question: | How do I sanitize and clean this? I get nervous putting some foreign device into my wort |
Answer: | You can put it in the last 10 minutes of your boil, or stick it in a bucket of a properly mixed StarSan solution (this will keep it shiny as StarSan is acidic). When done, rinse right away and store in a dry location. https://www.coldbreakbrewing.com/blogs/homebrewing-help/16297193-cleaning-and-sanitizing-an-immersion-chiller |

User questions & answers
Question: | What would you need to hook this to a kitchen faucet |
Answer: | There are faucet adapters that can be purchased to use with this item. However, it will only work with the older style screw on faucet, not the newer faucets that also work as sprayers. |
Question: | What are the outside diameter and height of the coil assembly? I need to know what size container I can fit the coil into |
Answer: | The coil diameter is just over 9 inches, the height of the coils is about 4 inches. The bend at the top is at 16 inches. |
Question: | Do you happen to have 1" copper coil in 50 feet or is that something you could custom make |
Answer: | I have the stainless steel which would be much harder to work with. Lots of people do buy their own copper coil and fashion their own wort chillers. There is a plethora of info available online on how to do this! |
Question: | Is it possible to easily wash between the coils with a sponge |
Answer: | I use a stiff Libman brush. Gets right in there and cleans it up. Of course, the sooner you wash it after use, the easier it is to clean it up. If you do it soon, within 30-45 minutes, the shower head will wash away 90% of the stuff you want to get rid of (I wash all my brewing stuff in the tub/shower, since I don't have a commercial kitchen setup handy). After the shower head, the brush cleans it up in no time. Again, the key is to not let it sit for long after you get your wort cooled down. |

Question: | Is the hose 1/2 " internal diameter |
Answer: | It is 3/8" inside x 1/2" outside. |
Question: | Can I use this product with a spigot instead of a faucet |
Answer: | I'm not really sure what the difference is between a spigot and a faucet. I thought they were different names for the same thing. The connections are garden hose connections. Hopefully that helps. |
Question: | Will this connection fit on a standard sink or do I need an adapter |
Answer: | This "deluxe package" comes with an adapter that converts a standard sink to a garden hose fitting. It works perfectly fine in my experience. Just make sure to double check for it when you receive the package, since they assemble these kits manually and could forget a part. User questions & answers
Question: | temperature rating on vinyl tubing supplied? Is it food grade |
Answer: | The tubing we supply for this product is made by Kuri Tec. It is food grade vinyl tubing that is Phthalate free and made in the U.S.A. The temperature rating is unknown but is fine for temperatures of 220 degrees, which is the temperature of boiling wort.Tarn,HomeBrewStuff |
Question: | What is the diameter of the coil |
Answer: | It is exactly 9 & 1/8th inches across the outside edge of the coils. It's 16 & 1/2 inches tall, from the bottom coil to the top of the curved "cobra fangs" (but, that height is a bit adjustable if you change the spacing between some of the coils). |
Question: | How tall is it? I use a keg for a brew pot, does it reach above the open end |
Answer: | Ok, the whole thing is 17 inches tall from the bottom to the top of the bend where the hoses connect to it. The top of the coils are about 6 and a half inches from the bottom to the top of the coils, and across from side to side, it's right at 9 inches. I read somewhere, don't remember where, that the coils could be adjusted a little, as in they could be pulled apart a little (think, like a spring) to give more height. I don't know how much more height you could get with that trick, but it seems like it adjusts fairly easy. But, I imagine it's one of those "once you go too far, you might ruin it type things", so I wouldn't adjust too much at one time.It also seems like you could fairly easily just suspend it in the brew kettle, since the one I got has quite a bit of length after that bend at the top. The prongs there at the top are about 3.75 inches long and both extend out from each other at about a 60 degree angle from each other. Looks like the design has gone through a couple of upgrades since that picture was taken. They have also installed a small "caterpillar" clamp there around the longest part of the vertical tubes to prevent separation and to give it durability. |
Question: | What is the coil diameter, approximately? I'm trying to determine whether it will fit in my boil pot, or how big a pot to buy next. Thanks |
Answer: | My pot is OD 18.5" and it has lots of space. You shouldn't base your next pot size on the beers you'll be making and not the size of the chiller though ;) I highly recommend 9+ gal pots for full-boil 5 gal batches. Cheers! |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is it food safety aproved |
Answer: | yes, our wort chiller have got the food safety approval. |
Question: | What size hose barbs are needed for this because the 1/2 ones do not work |
Answer: | I put 3/4 inch hose adapters on it to fit standard garden hoses for the water in and out. 1/2 couplings should work on them. |
Question: | It could work by gravity |
Answer: | Yes it works by gravity. I would suggest testing it first, might need to be put into an ice bath to get it down to temp tho. |
Question: | Which tube diameter use |
Answer: | 1/2 inch |
