Differences in Steel

In metallurgy, stainless steel is defined as a steel alloy with a minimum of 11.5% chromium content by mass. Stainless steel does not stain, corrode or rust as easily as ordinary steel (it 'stains less'), but it is not stain-proof. For example, mayonnaise left on a knife blade in the sink seems to stain the blade a darker color.

There are different grades and surface finishes of stainless steel to suit the environment to which the material will be subjected in its lifetime. Stainless steels have sufficient amount of chromium present so that a passive film of chromium oxide forms which prevents further corrosion. Stainless steel's resistance to corrosion and staining, low maintenance, and affordability make it an ideal base material for a host of commercial applications including flatware.

There are different types of stainless steels: when nickel is added, the austenite structure of iron is stabilized. This crystal structure makes such steels non-magnetic and less brittle at low temperatures. For greater hardness and strength, carbon is added. When subjected to adequate heat treatment, these steels are used as razor blades, cutlery, flatware, etc. A typical composition of 18% chromium and 8% nickel, commonly known as 18/8 stainless, is often used in flatware. 18/8 has approximately 18% chromium, and from 8-10 percent nickel. The nomenclature 18/8, and 18/10 are sometimes both used to represent the same type steel. 18/0 has 18 percent chromium, and no nickel. This common steel is often used in flatware sets as it combines the stain resistant elements of 18/8 at a lower cost. In recent years the price of nickel has increased by tenfold.

Care

Most stainless steel spoons and forks are marked with their steel chemistry; usually 18/0, 18/8, or 18/10. All of these compositions should give you years of use with limited maintenance. If you notice discoloring, or small oxidation marks on your stainless, it can usually be cleaned off with hot soapy water, and a sponge. If that doesn’t so the trick, use a good quality stainless polish. Often, a rust spot on your flatware is not the flatware itself, but a dissimilar steel peeler or other item leaning against it in the dishwasher. There are many unique finishes available on flatware these days. The most durable and stain resistant is a high gloss mirror finish. A smooth mirror finish leaves little for oxidizing agents to attack. Satin finish (also known as brushed) breaks the surface of the steel, so it is more prone to staining. However, satin finishes, like on our Norse pattern, can be revitalized simple by scrubbing (in the direction of the 'grain') with a scotch-brite pad, or very fine steel wool. This cleans off the surface, and adds more micro scratches. Don’t try and scrub a frosted (also known as sand blast, or bead blast) finish, such as Pendulum. Just use a good stainless polish and a soft cloth.

Answer:	Yes, of course you can. There are so many variables in reed instruments that it really boils down to personal preference; how it feels, how it sounds. The strength of the reed, the lay of the mouthpiece, the mouthpiece material, the bore of the mouthpiece as well as the horn itself, all factor into how the notes sound. All that equipment turns on how you yourself play and what tone you're looking for. I was going to say that classical / concert band pieces would usually favor a rounder, softer tone than jazz, but I can think of dozens of exceptions right off the top of my head. I would recommend playing around and experimenting and go with what gives you the results you like best. I love Vandoren reeds and have played all their "varieties". The jazz and "standard" versions are the ones I find most adaptable to any style.
Question:	What is stone and beam doing to address the rusting issue on the knives? are they replacing them? Are they offering a refund
Answer:	I play this Zz 2.5 on my soprano saxophone on a Otto Link super tone 7*. It’s smooth, really smooth. I can get a Gato Barbieri tone out of it on the Otto Link. Go for it !

Answer:	The cr112 reeds provide a more quality, clear tone, while the cr102's are a bit less quality but not as pricey.

Answer:	Java are some of the top of the line reeds. They are used for smoother more controlled sound, typically for jazz. Rico are good for beginners, but vandoren and vandoren java have better sound quality control, especially as you begin to advance in music capabilities, experience and broadening styles.

Answer:	love these reeds. they are indestructible!! good for me who has only been playing two years. i guess they are unfiled, have to see what a filed reed looks like.
Question:	What is the warranty on this set
Answer:	My STM is a vintage model worked on to be at .107 (7*). I like how these reeds sound and play better than the ZZs and Javas. 2 1/2 are lighter, brighter and quick. 3 1/2 are darker and not as quick. I tend to use 3s because I want to slap it on and go. Of course, YMMV.
Question:	Does the knife in this Pfaltzgraff garland frost have serrated edges at the end
Answer:	No. The traditional reeds are harder than the javas. A 3.5 traditional is equivalent to a 4 java. However, make sure to purchase your feed according to your mouthpiece facing. Different mouthpieces need different reed strengths.

Answer:	The reeds are #4 if it says #4. The picture is just a generic picture. Plus, it's the old Vandoren reed box design. You'll get new #4's.

Answer:	Yes most reviews refer to it as for jazz band because it is the best you will find for jazz, but it's also my favorite for all other applications, as it will improve your tone quality, period, regardless of what you use it for. You can't go wrong with these!

Answer:	You probably want to start with a 3 if you have been playing on a Rico. Expect the vandoren to be harder than the Rico. I play on a Rico 4, vandoren 3 and a vandoren java 3.5.

Answer:	I actually found the Vandoren Java Red Reeds to be a little more consistent for performing use compared to the regular green box Java Reeds. I still like both though.
