12 best kitchen sharpeners
Kitchen sharpeners are essential tools for maintaining the sharpness and effectiveness of knives and other cutting implements in the kitchen. They help ensure that knives remain safe and efficient for various food preparation tasks. Here's what you need to know about kitchen sharpeners and their related aspects:
Types of Kitchen Sharpeners:
Manual Knife Sharpeners: These are handheld devices that require manual effort to sharpen a knife. They come in various forms, including sharpening stones, honing rods (also known as sharpening steels), and pull-through sharpeners.
Electric Knife Sharpeners: These are motorized devices that automate the sharpening process. Electric sharpeners are convenient and suitable for individuals who want quick and consistent results.
Sharpening Systems: These systems often consist of guided rods or stones that help maintain the correct angle while sharpening. They are favored by those who want precise control over the sharpening process.
Honing vs. Sharpening:
Honing and sharpening are two distinct processes. Honing is the act of realigning the blade's edge to keep it straight, while sharpening involves removing metal to create a new edge.
Honing rods or steels are used for regular maintenance to keep a knife's edge aligned between sharpening sessions.
Knife Sharpening Angle:
The angle at which a knife is sharpened depends on the type of knife and its intended use. For example, most Western-style knives have a bevel angle of around 20 degrees, while Japanese knives may have sharper angles.
Some sharpeners have built-in angle guides to help users maintain the correct angle while sharpening.
Sharpening Stones:
Sharpening stones come in various grit levels, from coarse to fine.Coarse stones are used for repairing damaged or very dull blades, while fine stones are for refining and polishing the edge.
Water stones, oil stones, and diamond stones are common types of sharpening stones.
Knife Compatibility:
- It's important to choose a sharpener that is suitable for the type of knives you own. Some sharpeners may not be appropriate for certain blade materials or sizes.
Safety Precautions:
- When using any type of knife sharpener, safety is paramount. Follow the manufacturer's instructions, and be cautious to avoid accidents or injury.
Maintenance and Care:
- Sharpeners themselves may require occasional cleaning and maintenance to ensure their effectiveness over time.
Benefits of Using a Kitchen Sharpener:
Regularly sharpening your knives with the appropriate tool ensures that they remain sharp and safe to use, reducing the risk of accidents.
Sharp knives are more efficient and precise, making food preparation tasks quicker and more enjoyable.
In summary, kitchen sharpeners are tools designed to maintain the sharpness and performance of kitchen knives and other cutting tools. There are various types of sharpeners available, from manual options like sharpening stones to electric sharpeners that provide quick and consistent results. Proper sharpening helps ensure that knives remain safe and efficient for food preparation tasks.

Product description
The Presto electric knife sharpener provides an easy, automatic way to sharpen most non-serrated kitchen and sport knives to a razor sharp edge. With a special two stage system, it precision grinds a perfect sharpening angle, then fine hones and polishes the edge for professional results at home, anytime. 120 volts AC. Features: Nonslip Base, Electric Sharpening, Preset Angles for Correct Sharpening, Sharpening Levels: Coarse and Fine
All kitchen and sporting knives, whether professional quality or inexpensive, need a blade tune-up now and then. This electric sharpener produces razor-sharp edges using the same rapidly rotating Sapphirite grinding wheels used by professional shops. A two-stage system allows knives to be ground and sharpened on the Stage 1 half of the machine, and then honed on the Stage 2 half. Blade guides hold the knife at the ideal sharpening angle for each side of the blade, as it is drawn slowly towards the user and kept parallel to the countertop. The sharpener is suitable for knives made of alloy, carbon, or stainless steel; it is perfectly normal for sparks to fly when knives of high carbon steel come in contact with the Sapphirite wheels. Non-electric serrated knives that are only serrated on one side can also be sharpened with this machine. Three suction cups on the bottom hold the sharpener securely on a table or countertop, and two receptacles underneath catch metal filings for disposal. The sharpener measures 8-1/4 by 5-3/4 by 4 inches, and is covered by a 1-year limited warranty against defects. --Ann Bieri

User questions & answers

Question: | I ruined my knife. Cutting edge looks bent? no longer sharp. what did I do wrong? did I put it too far into the sharpening space-- It got stuck twice.tx |
Answer: | Probably, but I would use a sharpener made specifically for ceramic knives. |
Question: | do I need spare sharpening wheels |
Answer: | Yes the glove was included when I got mine. |
Question: | Will it sharpen scissors |
Answer: | Not at all, the blade is sharpened better with minimal pressing inside the V. |

Answer: | The E2 Mini Kitchen Knife Sharpener creates the most often used 20° angle on each side of a blade. For more information, contact our Customer Service Dept. at 800-418-1439. |
Question: | Does it work on Cutco knoves |
Answer: | Cutco knives have a “forever guarantee” and they will sharpen your blades free of charge. If you want to do it yourself, you can sharpen them successfully. Be aware that Cutco also manufactures what they call "Double D" and "Micro-D" edges. These are considered "ever-sharp" so you wouldn’t want to sharpen those, as it would grind the serrations off. We recommend sending those types of knives into the manufacturer for sharpening. If you have additional questions, Work Sharp is here to help: 1-800-418-1439. |
Question: | What angle does this sharpener use to sharpen the knifes.? the asian cut is 15 degrees, the european cut which i believe is 18 degrees |
Answer: | The kitchen guide is 20 degrees, which allows you to put a small microbevel on your Asian blades, making them quicker to touch-up. If you have more questions, feel free to reach out to our service team at 1-800-418-1439. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this work better than conventional Sharpening Steel |
Answer: | I haven"t used it for that. I don't think it would work very well for sharpening the gut hooks. It does a great job on the knife blades though. |
Question: | can I sharpen scissors with it |
Answer: | Most of my kitchen and pocket knives are Shun and Al Mar Japanese knives. Received Work Sharp yesterday and all my knives (35+) are now sharpened and even polished with 6000 grit. The way the sharpening belt bends allow sharpening the 30deg edges with ease. I am way past the ritual of "perfect sharpening" the long difficult traditional way. With Work Sharp all my knives are as sharp or sharper than ever. It is so easy and convient while watching TV or listening to NPR radio to slide the blades through, wish I bought this 10 or 15yrs ago. It has always been a hassle to get out all the sharpening stones and tools, NO MORE! Happy Trails |
Question: | Can this be used for Japanese knives, which use a 16-17 degree angle as opposed to a 20-22 degree angle? I don't want to ruin my Shun. Thanks |
Answer: | Hello Stephanie, There are 3 major differences between the Ken Onion Edition Knife and Tool Sharpener and the Original Knife and Tool Sharpener: 1. Angle Guides: Ken Onion Version is adjustable from 15°-30° (in 1° increments) (Original KTS has 2 guides available, 20° and 25°) 2. Belts: Ken Onion Version uses premium ¾” x 12” Norton Norax belts (Original KTS has ½” x 12” abrasive belts) 3. Motor: Ken Onion Version has a variable-speed heavy duty motor (Original KTS can be run on Intermittent or Full power, non-variable) |
Question: | Will this work on serrated blades |
Answer: | No. The belts are too thin. You will wear out many belts to get just 1 blade sharp. This is a small knife sharpener, I wouldn't sharpen anything bigger than a kitchen knife or scissors. The sharpening belt is about 1" wide and paper thin. I wore out 2 med and 2 fine belts sharpening about 10 knives when I first got this machine. It works good but it is not built for things like shovels and mower blades. I am not sure I would sharpen a machete with it. |

Question: | Someone mentined it comes from china so is this USA or not |
Answer: | Yes manually in the top center slot. |
Question: | Is the 4643 fully identical to a 464 plus a 463? That is, are the Stage 2 slots on the 464 and the 463 the same, or is the 4643 Stage 2 a compromise |
Answer: | It has three settings ceramic, course, fine...I see no reason why it would not sharpen cleavers/Asian knives.....it is the best knife sharpener I have ever used because of the handle you can hold while running the knife through the sharpener. I think you will be very pleased with the purchase.... |
Question: | ideal for quality knives like Global and Wusthof? I know there are different slots for asian & european but wonder if they actually work |
Answer: | Yes |
Question: | I see this is an upgrade from model 4633, which is significantly less expensive. Has anyone tried both, and if so, is the 4643 worth the extra cost |
Answer: | Knife sharpeners usually don't sharpen scissors because of the very different angels of the blades. There is a sharpener here on Amazon that sharpen both it made by Henslow, and has good reviews.Henslow Knife Sharpener Is 4 In 1 Multi-Function |

Protect Your Investment
Since all knives dull with use, it's important to protect your cutlery investments with the right maintenance tools. A knife's long-term performance depends on how it is resharpened.
Knives made of the finest steel will hold an edge longer, but even the best of knives dull with use- and the initial factory edge only lasts for the first few days or weeks of use.
Than for more than 99% of a knife's useful life, it's edge performance depends on how it is resharpened. Replicating the initial factory edge is not particularly relevant, especially since today's modern sharpeners can apply a better factory edge on every knife.
- Bavarian Edge kitchen knife sharpener sharpens ALL your dull knives in seconds, unlike an electric knife sharpener or sharpening steel that only sharpens a couple different types of blades

- Sharpens, hones, and polishes your old knives – give your chef knife and butcher knife a makeover
- Professional and portable knife sharpener works on all types of knife blades, like standard, serrated, and beveled
- Includes 1 Bavarian Edge knife sharpener and instructions manual
User questions & answers
Question: | Will this sharpen a knife to a 15° angle |
Answer: | IMO serrations are only ground on one side of the blade. I only draw the opposite side over the sharpening steel for a touch up. Works to a point. Serrations can only be correctly sharpened using a round file type sharpener with a smaller radius than the serration grooves. Each groove is sharpened individually with the sharpening tool passed in the groove perpendicular to the blade |
Question: | how tall is the bavarian knife sharperner and how wide is it.? no info on this |
Answer: | Between 12 and 15 degrees. If you put a matchbook against the steel, that is the approximate angle. |
Question: | Can it be mounted on the wall |
Answer: | Less than 1/2". Our knife block hole is 1/2" and this sharpener fits in it easily. |
Question: | I am a bit concerned with some reviews indicating that this sharpener cannot handle hard-steel knives. Has anyone else tried with hard-steel |
Answer: | It is a HONING steel. It keeps already sharp knives sharp. It is an edge maintenance device. If your knives are dull, no amount of honing with this will give you a sharp edge. For sharpening, you need to remove steel from the edge, which this will not do. Have your knives sharpened professionally ( it's cheap) then use this to KEEP them sharp between sharpening. |

Answer: | Ma'am, I'm so glad you asked... I just got off the phone from those fine folks at WorkSharpTools... They, like their products, are incredible. I never hesitate to call, when I have questions. They're polite, patient, and thoroughly professional...To answer your question, they have a special diamond belt kit for the Ken Onion Edition. It includes two belts, a 180 grit, and a 1500 grit. These are what they recommend for sharpening ceramic blades. These belts are available here, at Amazon.com, with part #0002970, and have a price of $25.99... I could not be happier with my gear from WorkSharpTools, as they have exceeded my every expectation. Quality, efficiency, and adaptability, these devices do it all... I heartily recommend their Tool Grinding Attachment, #WSSAK081111, and their Belt Grinding Attachment, #WSSSAK0881112. Additionally, the belts that all of the Ken Onion Edition Knife and Tool Sharpener and Attachments use, are professional grade... You won't find better, even at twice the price...Hope I've answered your question... God Bless You and Yours... |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this sharpen scissors |
Answer: | I am not sure where to find replacement parts. I didn't keep my knife sharpener. I returned mine. I wasn't at all impressed with the product. |
Question: | Does this sharpener only sharpen to a 15 degree edge? Or can it do 20 also |
Answer: | You can buy ruixin stones on Amazon or eBay. You can buy aluminum backing plates on eBay. Use an epoxy to glue stones to backing plate. |
Question: | Will this knife sharpener sharpen small paring knife |
Answer: | I got fair results. Try it. Take your time. My knife has a very small recurve & I'm new to sharpening with a clamp in system since I got arthritis. I could not sharpen with this sharpener & slice paper so I got the KME with diamond stones & I'm very happy. Sold & sent all the chinese knock offs back. You can pick up a Lansky or Gatco system with diamond stones with a serrated stone about $80 almost as good as KME. Whatever you get Amazon has a pretty good return policy. |
Question: | Can I get replacement grinding stones for this sharpener |
Answer: | All are wet stones. Only issue is those mounted to the retention block. I soak the bare stones but only do a quick rinse with the mounted stones. The comments for dry use are usually just when doing the quick magic marker test. The residual water tends to wash away the color. |

User questions & answers
Question: | works with ceramic knives |
Answer: | Ceramic knives have a Rockwell C hardness of 95. Diamonds are 100, which is the hardest Natural substance. Talc (talcum powder) is 1. The edge on a ceramic knife is extremely brittle and easily damaged. A diamond "stone" will sharpen it, but you have to use Very Light Pressure or you'll chip the edge, and the result will likely be duller than what you started with! Worksharp has 1500 grit diamond belts for their machines. They will do the trick, but you can buy several ceramic knives for the price of a Worksharp sharpener! Do a search here on Amazon using " Worksharp " and there's plenty of information if you really want to try it. Good luck. BTW, Amazon sells Level 5 cut resistant gloves, also. They are inexpensive and I wear mine when I get a new knife 'til I get used to how it opens, closes and handles. |
Question: | will this hurt my brand new kabar |
Answer: | It shouldn't hurt your brand new Kabar knife if you run it straight and smoothly through the v notch slots (make sure it's on the desired angle setting) and don't apply too much pressure or the carbide and ceramic blades on the sharpener end up causing rips/scratches on the edge. The method for this tool should be a light, precise and gradual sharpening process so the edge is formed/honed to the desired shape and cutting angle. I also use this sharpener on $50 to $400 benchmade knives as well as 1060/1095 differentially hardened swords. It works well as long as you are patient and careful with the process. (some 2000 grit sandpaper helps too for smoothing the edge or appleseeding the blade geometry) |
Question: | Can this sharpen USMC KA-BAR |
Answer: | Yes. The sharpener handles angles from 14-24 degrees, and the USMC KA-BAR has 20 degree angles. |
Question: | Will this work with knives which are ground to a 15 degree angle per side |
Answer: | Oh come on, people. Listen, the simple answer is "no" - the Smith 50264 won’t allow you to sharpen a 15 degree angle. But the ‘real world’ answer is, "How adept are you at noticing a single degree difference in sharpness?" The Smith 50264 will offer you a 14 and a 16 degree options (and 4 other option up to 28 degrees). Most ‘pull through’ sharpeners have a single degree setting. Be happy, enjoy the benefits of a sharp knife, and leave the ‘geek stuff’ to frustrated people with nothing better to do in their lives. BTW I also have the WorkSharp and the Spyderco systems. They work fine. But for a quick, ease of use, no setup needed option the Smith system is awesome. And, in the ‘real world’ - the simple truth is, anything that easily keeps your knives sharp is far better than a ‘pricey system’ that you never use because it takes too much work to set it up. |

User questions & answers
Question: | what are the grit sizes on this sharpener |
Answer: | I've looked at all the documentation & manual but there is no obvious information on grit sizes. Suggest you contact manufacturer for help on this question.Good Luck. |
Question: | how well does it sharpen serrated knives with a diamond edge |
Answer: | I'm not sure about diamond edge knives, but I will say it only works on less than half of my kitchen knives as the width of the blade on many of my knives is too wide to fit in the slot and contact the stone. It didn't work well on my serrated knives. Good for smaller paring knives. |
Question: | st time sharpened 8 knives. Noticed that the blades have cut through the plastic to the metal as you bring blades through the slot...is this normal |
Answer: | ...not sure if it is "normal", but the same thing happened to me. I just ignore it.....what other choice do you have? If you want the blade sharpened as far as the handle, there doesn't seem to be any other way. Holding the blade level as you draw it through the slot seemed to ameliorate that problem somewhat. I do like the product. I don't see any other way to get the blade sharpened as far as the handle. |
Question: | why does the motor get to hot to touch |
Answer: | I do not have that problem. I sharpen maybe 7-8 knives in about 15-20 mins. The motor does not get hot. If you do not have it on for more than 15-20 minutes, it should not be getting so hot. If you are sharpening 50-100 knives over a 2 hr. period, then ya, it could get a little hot. If it is just a few knives, I would say your unit is defective and I would return it. There may be a dangerous wiring problem in the unit. Be careful. |
