13 best diamond knife sharpeners

Diamond knife sharpeners are specialized tools used for sharpening kitchen knives and other cutting implements. Unlike traditional sharpening stones or honing rods, diamond knife sharpeners employ diamond-coated surfaces to effectively sharpen blades. These sharpeners are highly regarded for their efficiency and precision in restoring a knife's edge.

Key features of diamond knife sharpeners include:

  1. Diamond-Coated Surface: Diamond sharpeners have a surface embedded with industrial-grade diamonds, which are exceptionally hard and durable. This surface is used to grind and reshape the blade's edge.

  2. Fast and Efficient: The hardness of diamond abrasive material makes the sharpening process quick and efficient. It can easily restore a dull or damaged knife to a razor-sharp edge with minimal effort.

  3. Versatility: Diamond sharpeners are suitable for a wide range of knives, including kitchen knives, pocket knives, hunting knives, and more. They can also be used for serrated edges and other blade types.

  4. Durability: Diamond sharpeners are known for their long-lasting performance. The diamond-coated surface does not wear out as quickly as traditional sharpening stones, ensuring consistent results over time.

  5. Ease of Use: These sharpeners are typically user-friendly, making them suitable for both professional chefs and home cooks. Many models come with guides or angle presets to help users maintain the correct sharpening angle.

  6. Different Grits: Diamond sharpeners come in various grit levels, ranging from coarse to fine.Coarse grits are used for repairing damaged or very dull blades, while finer grits are for polishing and honing the edge to a fine finish.

  7. Maintenance: While diamond sharpeners require less maintenance than traditional stones, they may need occasional cleaning to remove metal particles that accumulate on the surface during sharpening.

In summary, diamond knife sharpeners are valuable tools for maintaining the sharpness and performance of kitchen knives and other cutting tools. They offer speed, precision, and durability, making them a popular choice among chefs and culinary enthusiasts.

User questions & answers

Question: Can it be used to sharpen ice skates
Answer: Yes, it can be turned around. It also has marks on the second side for a left handed person.
Question: What degree does it sharpen to
Answer: There are two styles. One has a slot on the bottom for scissors. It looks entirely different than the pic. in the ad. You have to click where it gives you a choice of 3 or 4 slots. I don't think many or anyone apparently saw that part. Look and see. I am not saying that its good. I am just saying the other model claims to sharpen scissors. I don't know which sharpener I am going to buy. I would be nice to be able sharpen my scissors though. ciao
Question: Will this sharpen an 8 in. blade with an angle of 15 degrees
Answer: Do NOT use this on Japanese or Asian style knives. They require a steeper angle for sharpening that this sharpener cannot provide. At best, you'd be taking off the entire edge and replacing it with a non-hardened western-style edge. At worst, you'd be destroying your knife.
Question: sirve para cuchillos dentados
Answer: I would not put a serrated knife in any sharpener. A sharpener is designed to smooth a blade to the point of being sharp.

User questions & answers

Question: How many (stones) fit into an altoids tin? i'd like to carry stones in my sheath so i can sharpen if needed. too small for 4-6 inch blade?? ty
Answer: This stone is very coarse and aggressive, for putting the initial bevel on the blade. It will not work for serrated blades, or serrated portions of blades. If the blade is already pretty sharp, it would be better to go with a finer stone to maintain the edge. The best way is to use an ascending series of stones, starting with very coarse to very fine, maybe 1200 grit or so to finish. In my knife sharpening business, I finish up each blade using stropping compound on a leather strop, so my routine is 7 ascending grits in all.
Question: Is this for DMT pro aligner kit
Answer: Hello, This is a sharpener, not a lapping stone for flattening other stones. The surface is not designed to withstand the abuse of flattening. DMT has a DiaFlat with our developed hard coat technology; this is the only stone we recommend using for this application.
Question: Can these be used to sharpen woodworking chisels and plane irons
Answer: It depends but if they are already sharp then the finest grit is best to keep them in shape. to resharpen you"ll want a coarser grit. the 'fine' stone is probably best for all around.
Question: Can these stones be use to flatten whetstones
Answer: I use it dry ! But also take a wet towel to it wipe it down every now and again .

Product description

Uniquely designed diamond sharpening stones will hone the hardest material with less time and effort than conventional stones. Interrupted pattern increases cutting action while clearing fines from the diamond surface. Remains flat, requires only water as a lubricant and is virtually indestructible.

This all-purpose whetstone sharpens and hones a variety of household tools and equipment, maintaining the accessories for the hobbies of just about everyone in the house. Its most common use is for sharpening kitchen cutlery and scissors; however, this whetstone also works on chisels, planes, masonry drills, and other shop tools; garden tools; ice skates; climbing equipment; ski edges; fishhooks; ceramic; stone; and glass. The whetstone is durably and uniquely constructed of perforated steel molded into a plastic base. The surface features minute pieces of diamond, the hardest known material for sharpening, embedded into a nickel plate, to achieve an extremely sharp edge. The bonded diamonds are arranged around an innovative pattern of plastic discs and the combination of these two materials greatly reduces sharpening time and resists wearing over time.

This particular whetstone is encrusted with a fine diamond grit of 600 mesh to put a razor-sharp edge on any type of blade. The surface should be moistened before sharpening and the blade should be passed over the whetstone with light pressure at a 20-degree angle to get the proper edge without dulling it. After sharpening, the whetstone may simply be wiped off and its nonporous properties prevent water from seeping below the surface.

This whetstone measures 6 by 2 by 3/4 inches and has rubber safety feet underneath it to prevent sliding during sharpening. DMT generously vows to replace any product found to be defective free of charge. --Cristina Vaamonde

User questions & answers

Question: I have a smith & wesson border guard 2 rescue knife swbg2ts.. would this work well for that
Answer: Just had a look at mine--nope, no abrasive on the edge--the cards are really thin, so I don't there really could be, anyway.
Question: Can you use this to level other whetstones
Answer: Never have tried to cut them in half. Haven't experienced your problem with wear either. love these little stones. They do wear out though.
Question: What grit or grits work best to sharpen wood plane irons
Answer: I don't think there is any danger of snapping the Dia-Sharp card by accident (or on purpose, for that matter). The substrate appears to be steel, about 1.5x the thickness of a credit card, with the finishing surface diamond-impregnated.
Question: does it work better wet or dry
Answer: Please do not buy from this seller, I had to get a refund from amazon because it only came with the extra fine sharpener. I have however used it several times on my mora which is effective but by sight and through refracting light seems to be no presence whatsoever of diamonds. As much as this will probably be criticized, I recommend just grabbing a good ol' reliable puck sharpener.

ENJOY SUPERIOR SLICING & DICING

Dull knives are obvious, right? Not always! Just because your favorite kitchen knife can still make it through a tomato doesn’t mean it’s as sharp as it could be. Most of us use our knives so frequently we just get used to a dull blade. We don’t realize how much easier and faster our chopping endeavors could be.

To test it out, try this: slice through the middle of an onion. If it produces tears, your knife needs sharpening. The explanation? A dull knife damages an onion’s cellular structure and releases a chemical that causes our eyes to water. The lesson? A sharp knife always makes a cleaner cut.

Sharpening your knives doesn’t require much time or effort with the right tool. Priority Chef 3-Step Knife Sharpener System makes it quick and easy. Repair, restore, and polish your knives and keep them honed for everyday use. We included a special sharpening slot just for scissors too.

STRAIGHT UP, THE BEST KNIFE SHARPENER

  • No-slip safety grip
  • Soft-cushioned base keeps it anchored
  • 3 stages to sharper kitchen and utility knives
  • #100 and #600 grit superior diamond rods to repair and sharpen
  • Premium #1000 grit ceramic rods to polish your knives
  • 1 tungsten carbide slot specially designed for scissors
  • Includes level 5 cut-resistant safety glove & instruction booklet

CAN I SHARPEN MY CERAMIC KNIVES?

Yes––it accommodates and is safe for ceramic blades. However, slot 1 may be too abrasive for ceramic, which is prone to micro-chipping. We suggest using slot 2 for ceramic knives.

DO I NEED TO USE A SPECIAL TECHNIQUE?

It’s as easy as 1-2-3. The diamond rods are precisely angled to expertly sharpen your blades. Just drag the knife blade through the slot approximately 4

  • Easy & Expert Level: Repair and restore your carbon or stainless steel kitchen and utility knives with our professional-grade kitchen knife sharpener recommended by expert chefs. Just a few quick strokes bring your blades back to life.
  • A Smoother, Sharper Edge: Our knife sharpener gives your favorite knives TLC. The coarse grit is abrasive enough to repair very dull, worn knives. The fine grit hones, polishes, and smooths blades to an exceptionally clean edge.
  • From Start To Finish: We took the guesswork out of knife sharpeners - just 3 quick and simple steps to razor-sharp knives. Superior diamond rods restore, sharpen, align, and polish any straight-edge blade with just a few strokes.
  • Design For Safety: Knife sharpener best design features include a comfortable grip for safe control and a soft cushioned base that keeps it anchored to the countertop. To make it complete, we added a bonus safety glove and a set of instructions.
  • A Sharper Look: That last thing you want are clunky looking appliances taking up counter space. That’s why we designed our knife sharpener in the clean, svelte, minimalist style of black and stainless steel that looks sharp in any kitchen.

User questions & answers

Question: What angle does this sharpen at
Answer: Sharpening steel doesn't remove material from the knife, therefore if a knife is dull, steel will not be able to make it sharp again. The main purpose of the steel is to "shape" the edge of the knife by deforming material along the knife edge to smooth it out. I found this KitchenIQ 50009 is the easiest and cheapest solution to sharpen the knife. However, this tool is designed for the right-handed people in mind. If you are left handed, it'd be a little awkward to use. You need to place this tool on a stable surface and hold it with your left hand. Place the knife in the coarse slot, nearest to the handle, apply little pressure down and pull the knife toward you. (Too much pressure can gouge you knife due to uneven material removal.) Lift the knife up and repeat as many times as you want until you can cut a piece of paper with ease. You should see some metal shaving in this step. Once the knife is sharp, you can use the other slot or steel to hone the knife edge to smooth it out.
Question: I had high hopes for this sharpener but it is not having any effect on my Henkel knives. If anything they seem duller. Can anyone give me tips
Answer: I’ve read that you can sharpen scissors by cutting through a few layers of aluminum foil. Seems to work. (but I would NOT do that with barber/hair scissors!!)
Question: What degree is the sharpener set to
Answer: most knifes are at 15de. not 16 or 17. please check with Buck Knifes and see for your self. never the less after using this sharpener for some time the knife will be at 15 de. Have fun
Question: Is this item made in the USA
Answer: According to the package, you can sharpen serrated blades on the fine side of the sharpener only. However, I would use a serrated combo knife sharpener like this (http://www.amazon.com/Lansky-3143-PS-MED01-BladeMedic/dp/B0085PPSIQ/ref=pd_sim_200_1?ie=UTF8&dpID=41SK1bQyxRL&dpSrc=sims&preST=_AC_UL160_SR160%2C160_&refRID=1XY4G6XQJ5VC3THHF9XZ), which handles almost all sharpening tasks. Honestly, the only thing I use serrated blades for is cutting tomatoes and grapes. A serrated edge bites into the tough skin without mashing the delicate fruit and is best when making tomato skin rosettes. I have a great (and inexpensive) Rada tomato knife for that. That way, if it does get dull, I can easily buy a new one. A well-honed blade will cut through everything else easy-peasy.

User questions & answers

Question: Is it tough enough to sharpen hard steel
Answer: The grit is 600, 23 microns. This level of accuracy is ideal for routine maintenance. If you need sharpness at the scalpel level, you can use this level to prepare for the next level of sharpening.
Question: Can I wash my sharpener? How
Answer: If you're referring to the original kabar fighting/combat knife, then not very well. I have one and tried it with this sharpener and it was less than ideal. The sharpener is just too short to get more than half the length of the blade in a stroke. It works great for normal length pocket knives though.
Question: Can it be used to grind my scissors
Answer: I suspect most guys who really appreciate quality knives also want a good sharpening tool. As a collector of folding pocket knives and kitchen knives, about 35 of each, I have many of the most popular sharpening systems. Sharpeners have one thing in common they take quite a bit of time to use, skill no matter what anyone says, and pretty dramatic differences in success no matter how much you practice. From watching many videos of pro knife makers sharpening theirs the most common technique involves a fast rotating belt or stone. Most Japanese quality knife makes use BIG spinning stones, i.e. 5" x 48"+ diameter! Pro sharpening services also use large belt type, i.e. 2-4" wide x several feet long spinning fast. Work Sharp WSKTS Knife and Tool Sharpener makes a $70 smaller version of the belt type. It has built in guides is about 3/4"wide x 6" and spins much slower than the big ones BUT it is forgiving because it removes material much slower while many times faster than any of the hand operated types. Touching up kitchen knives takes a few minutes start to finish with one of several belt "grits". A belt lasts through 100+ sharpens. It is so fast and so good I NEVER use any of my others anymore. There is a fancier version for about $125 designed by Ken Onion a justifiably famous knife designer. If you anal retentive and small minded fanatic like I was keep using your slow, SLOW hand sharpeners noting with pride how sharp your blades are. After a couple sessions with the Work Sharp WSKTS Knife and Tool Sharpener you'll be born again with edges better than ever but you must have electricity in you home, LOL Happy Trails
Question: How long can this last? Will it wear out after some time
Answer: The instructions with mine say can be used with lubricant (oil or water) or used dry. They recommend (of course) Smith's honing solution. Avoid any petroleum based lube. I just use water, and rinse it off occasionally while sharpening.

  • 【GET RAZOR SHARP EDGE】Your knife, which may have previously felt sharp as a razor, starts to bite and catch on the food you're cutting. You can sense some resistance that wasn't there before. By running the blade along the honing steel, you can pull that microscopic edge of metal back into an upright position, and regain a good deal of its cutting power in the process.
  • 【EASY & SAFE TO USE】 With a 12-inch honing steel, you'll be able to use the vertical honing method with little risk of the knife hitting the work surface below. Ergonomic handle fits all hands, making it easy to use. The slip-resistant bottom durable handle will make the rod easy to handle and will stay in place while being used, so it becomes safer for you.
  • 【RETAINS MORE METAL ON YOUR KNIFE EDGE】The Honing steel sharpening rod is designed to be used often, it corrects the edge without shaving off much, if any, of the blade’s material. Its diamond coating gives kitchen knives an extremely fine sharpness when honed, quickly restoring their original cutting performance.
  • 【PRUNER AND KNIFE SHARPENER】Comes with a pocket pruner sharpener. It is made with long-lasting, hard sharpening tungsten carbide and ergonomic textured rubber handle to make sharpening your tools a breeze! Designed for sharpening blades of garden tools including secateurs, grafting knives, loppers and even lawn mower blades.
  • 【EASY TO STORAGE】The easiest way to keep your honing steel clean is to give it a quick clean after each and every use. This needn’t be a time-consuming process, simply wipe the honing steel with a dry cloth after every use. Please wipe dry completely after washing and hang in a cool place to air-dry, do not put the sharpener into the dishwasher.

User questions & answers

Question: Is this a sharpening steel or honing steel
Answer: No angle guide
Question: What is the diameter and length of the rod it self. I want to know if it will fit in my knife block
Answer: Diamond rod sharpeners only work on already sharp blades. They will turn a sharp blade into a razor blade. You need something like The Hunters Edge I think they call it. It's a diamond grinder disk sharpener to get the blade sharp. Then use the diamond rod sharpener to finish the job.
Question: Is the steel rod smooth or groved
Answer: Yes. I washed mine with warm water and i let it dry thoroughly before using it.
Question: How many knives can I sharpen before the grit is worn off
Answer: I would use the small sharpener which is included in the package for scissors and tools for your application... the 12 inch tool is exceptional for knives.

SHARPENING STEEL VS HONING STEEL

A sharpening steel removes material from your knife. By moving the edge alongside the steel remove steel to restore the V-shape of the edge. A sharpening steel can therefore be used to sharpen knives that have become blunt after frequent use.

A honing steel, on the contrary, is not used to sharpen but to restore the bent edge. It doesn’t remove any metal from the blade and can’t damage it in that way that a sharpener can.

The main difference between a sharpening and a honing steel is therefore whether or not material is removed.

Brace your steel

Brace that tip on a solid surface, like a chopping board on a kitchen counter, and hold your steel vertically in your non-dominant hand.

Position the knife

With your dominant hand, hold the knife against the steel, as close to the handle as possible. Twist the blade, so it’s at around a 20‑degree angle away from the steel.

Draw down

Using only gentle pressure, draw the blade down and away from the steel, so the edge runs along and down the steel from the part nearest the handle all the way to the tip.You don’t need much pressure at all to realign the edge.

Switch sides

Move the knife to the opposite side of the steel and repeat the process, using exactly the same steps above. Doing this for four or five strokes on each side of the blade should be more than enough to realign the edge.

User questions & answers

Question: Does this sharpen scissors
Answer: I am not sure where to find replacement parts. I didn't keep my knife sharpener. I returned mine. I wasn't at all impressed with the product.
Question: Does this sharpener only sharpen to a 15 degree edge? Or can it do 20 also
Answer: You can buy ruixin stones on Amazon or eBay. You can buy aluminum backing plates on eBay. Use an epoxy to glue stones to backing plate.
Question: Will this knife sharpener sharpen small paring knife
Answer: I got fair results. Try it. Take your time. My knife has a very small recurve & I'm new to sharpening with a clamp in system since I got arthritis. I could not sharpen with this sharpener & slice paper so I got the KME with diamond stones & I'm very happy. Sold & sent all the chinese knock offs back. You can pick up a Lansky or Gatco system with diamond stones with a serrated stone about $80 almost as good as KME. Whatever you get Amazon has a pretty good return policy.
Question: Can I get replacement grinding stones for this sharpener
Answer: All are wet stones. Only issue is those mounted to the retention block. I soak the bare stones but only do a quick rinse with the mounted stones. The comments for dry use are usually just when doing the quick magic marker test. The residual water tends to wash away the color.

Protect Your Investment

Since all knives dull with use, it's important to protect your cutlery investments with the right maintenance tools. A knife's long-term performance depends on how it is resharpened.

Knives made of the finest steel will hold an edge longer, but even the best of knives dull with use- and the initial factory edge only lasts for the first few days or weeks of use.

Than for more than 99% of a knife's useful life, it's edge performance depends on how it is resharpened. Replicating the initial factory edge is not particularly relevant, especially since today's modern sharpeners can apply a better factory edge on every knife.
