14 best iron skillets
Iron skillets, often referred to as cast iron skillets or cast iron pans, are versatile and durable cookware items commonly used in kitchens around the world. Here's what you should know about iron skillets:
Material: Iron skillets are typically made from cast iron, a type of metal known for its excellent heat retention and even heat distribution. This makes them ideal for various cooking methods, including frying, sautéing, baking, and even outdoor grilling.
Seasoning: Cast iron skillets require a process called "seasoning" to create a natural non-stick surface. Seasoning involves coating the skillet with a layer of oil or fat and heating it to a high temperature. This process polymerizes the oil, forming a protective layer that prevents food from sticking and helps develop a rich, dark patina over time.
Non-Stick Properties: A well-seasoned cast iron skillet can become nearly as non-stick as modern non-stick cookware, without the use of chemical coatings. This makes it an excellent choice for cooking items like eggs and pancakes.
Heat Distribution: Cast iron skillets distribute heat evenly across the cooking surface, which helps prevent hot spots and allows for consistent cooking results. This makes them great for searing meats and achieving a nice crust on dishes.
Versatility: Cast iron skillets can be used on various heat sources, including stovetops (gas, electric, induction), ovens, and even open flames or grills. This versatility makes them suitable for a wide range of cooking techniques.
Longevity: Properly cared for cast iron skillets can last for generations. They are highly durable and can withstand high temperatures, making them a timeless addition to any kitchen.
Care and Maintenance: To maintain the seasoning and prolong the life of your cast iron skillet, it's essential to avoid using harsh detergents or scouring pads that can strip the seasoning. Instead, clean it with a gentle scrub brush and hot water. After cleaning, thoroughly dry the skillet to prevent rusting.
Rust Prevention: If your cast iron skillet develops rust, you can easily remove it by scrubbing with steel wool or a scouring pad and then re-seasoning the pan. Regular use and proper maintenance will help prevent rust from forming in the first place.
Weight: Cast iron skillets are heavy, which can make them a bit cumbersome to handle, especially when filled with food. However, this weight also contributes to their heat retention and even cooking properties.
Cooking Tips: When using a cast iron skillet, it's a good practice to preheat it gradually to allow the heat to distribute evenly. Also, using a silicone handle cover or oven mitts is essential when handling the hot skillet.
In summary, cast iron skillets are prized cookware items known for their durability, versatility, and natural non-stick properties. With proper care and maintenance, they can become cherished kitchen heirlooms that improve with age and use. Whether you're searing, frying, baking, or sautéing, a well-seasoned cast iron skillet is a valuable addition to your kitchen arsenal.

Ready to Use: Factory Seasoning
To provide you with ready to use cast-iron skillets, all our cast-iron cookware pass through factory pre-seasoning stage in which soy-based oil is used on these high head allowing the polymers to create an initial layer of seasoning. This one factory seasoned layer is equivalent to 10-15 rounds of normal home seasoning. The normal cast iron seasoning we create at home is attained when the fats and oils used in cooking are collected on the cast iron.
This makes our cast iron cookware completely ready to be used straight out of the box. No initial seasoning is required. However; in order to maintain the factory-seasoned cast iron layer, you need to season it from time to time. Factory seasoning is just a kick-start to your cookware’s seasoning life. Not to forget that seasoning is an on-going course. If you want your cast iron to maintain a perfect black, non-stick patina, then get started with the cooking. Regular use and proper maintenance is the key to a coveted black non-stick surface.
Seasoning Tips
- Before cooking, rub some olive oil over your cookwares' surface
- After washing, rub some oil over your cookwares' surface and place it in an oven at low temperature for the oil to seep in
Enjoy a Healthy Lifestyle
Our cast iron skillets have an added advantage over the regular non-sticky pans. You can avoid the harmful effects that are found in regular non-stick pans.
Care Instructions
Cool the skillets completely before washing in hot soapy water with a sponge using a regular dish washing liquid soap; season with a thick coating of vegetable fat or oil.

- Hand wash even before first use and dry immediately; rub with a light coat of vegetable oil after every wash
- Allow cast iron skillet to cool completely before washing them in hot soapy water with a sponge using regular dishwashing liquid soap; it is not dishwasher safe
- Its superior heat retention will keep your mouth watering food warm for a long time
User questions & answers
Question: | Is the skillet very sticky to cook? nothing like non-stick |
Answer: | Surprisingly, no. This skillet is not sticky to cook. Not even cheese really sticks like in some pans, and the skillet cleans easier than I expected. |
Question: | Is This Dishwasher Safe |
Answer: | Hand wash with water. Never submerge cast iron or use a dishwasher. |
Question: | where is this made |
Answer: | The cast iron skillets made in China that are made for use in the USA have to meet specific FDA regulations. So grab them up quickly as the current administration in Washington DC is getting rid of a LOT of regulations for clean air, clean water, specific regs for cooking utensils made elsewhere. Otherwise get Griswold, Wagner, or Lodge pans all made here in the USA. Or you can go to yard sales, farm sales etc and find one made 75 years ago. But come on! How many great chefs do we have here? As a doctor I love the people who get upset about cast iron pans, then drink sugar sodas (probably #1 for obesity and heart disease) and all processed foods. Folks who go for gluten-free when the only people who need it are those with celiac disease...and so on. These Chinese made pans are cheap---that’s why we buy so much stuff made in China. |
Question: | Does it protect against firearms |
Answer: | This is actually a complicated answer that depends primarily energy dissipation. Cast iron's higher carbon content translates to a very stiff molecular structure of iron, carbon, silica, and impurities; which is physically very hard and has more ceramic / brittle characteristics than ductile metals. Cast iron won't bend; structural failure is driven by unpredictable and catastrophic crack propagation. Cast iron will shatter like a clay pot in a direct strike, but has a very high surface hardness, resilient to compression and superior at deflecting less-hard materials. If you bought 20 or so skillets and embedded them in a matrix of rubber and kevlar at varying surface normal angles, it would protect against smaller firearms. Need thicker plate for bigger rounds. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Whith what OIL was it seasoned |
Answer: | Our cast iron had been seasoned with Kosher Certified Palm Olein for years. We changed the seasoning to organic Flaxseed oil on the second half of 2017, which has had better results in testing, and skillets with that seasoning started hitting store shelves in August 2017. So both oils are vegetable oils baked at super high temperatures, but we just changed from Certified Kosher Palm Olein to Flaxseed, which is not certified Kosher. If you buy one today from Amazon, it'll be a flaxseed oil pan. |
Question: | Where made country |
Answer: | Colombia |
Question: | Is this skillet dishwasher safe |
Answer: | No! Cast iron pan without porcelain enamel should never be placed in dishwasher. |
Question: | How deep is this skillet |
Answer: | Well it recites Shakespeare, so I say pretty deep. |
Question: | Can this 11 inch enameled cast iron skillet be used in the oven |
Answer: | Doubt it since it has a non-stick surface. Enamel is better, see Lodge's Dutch oven http://www.amazon.com/Lodge-EC6D43-Enameled-Island-6-Quart/dp/B000N501BK/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1389456778&sr=8-3&keywords=lodge+cast+iron+dutch+oven |
Question: | Will it work on a glass topped electric stove |
Answer: | I have an induction stove with a glass top and it works fine. I bought it specifically for my glass top since a regular cast iron pan is a bit rough on the bottom this is smooth and will not scratch my stove top. However, it is heavy I always use care setting it down on the stove I think it is heavy enough that if dropped it has a possibility to break the glass. |
Question: | any one know of a cast iron or glass or even steel lid that fits on this skillet |
Answer: | I have the Lodge Dutch Oven and I use the lid from this which fits the skillet. I would assume that you might be able to pick up a lid from Bed, Bath and Beyond because they sell individual lids. |
Question: | What size dutch oven lid will fit the 11 inch cast iron enameled skillet and be safe to use |
Answer: | I have a 11" enameled skillet and the lid from my 6qt enameled Dutch Oven fits it nicely |

After perfecting the art of casting, Raúl’s passion for cooking and fresh foods lead him to create Victoria Cast Iron Cookware.

User questions & answers
Question: | induction usage possible |
Answer: | Yes the rule if a magnet will stick to the bottom it is induction ready I have only used mine on my induction cooktop. |
Question: | Anyone with experience cooking salmon? Suggestions? Recipies? (I don't like highly-seasoned foods |
Answer: | 1. season your salmon with some oil seasoning paste (oil + seasoning+ salt+ other spices of your choice). Let rest for 10-15 mins for the oil seasoning paste to be absorbed into the fish. If you don't like highly-seasoned foods, then make sure you buy good quality salmon, and you can just season it with some salt and a thin layer of oil, then adding some fresh lemon juice before serving. If you want to skip the oil too, then you need the part of the salmon that has more fat)2. Heat the pan until very very very hot, you don't need to put oil into the pan.3. Use medium high heat. Put the fish with the side you want to present on the plate DOWN. Seal for 2-4 mins depending on the thickness of your salmon.4. Flip the fish when you see the meat is almost half way cooked (you will notice the cooked part has a slightly different color)5. Turn OFF the heat or turn the heat down to low, because the heat from the pan will cook the meat for you and this process will prevent from over-cooking your fish.6. Cook for about 2 to 3 mins or until you see the color of the fish meat is slightly pinkish and when you press the fish with your finger the meat will not bounce back.7. Serve with some freshly cut lemon wedges, the squeeze the lemon juice on the fish before eating. |
Question: | The best way to clean a cast iron grill pan |
Answer: | Cast iron cookware is my favorite! I usually just rinse with hot water and use a mild scrubber on mine. After some time, however, my cast iron gets buildup on the sides - I put the pans in the self-cleaning oven and they come out like new. They do have to be re-seasoned but that doesn't take much effort. I'm sure it would work fine on this ridged pan that is sure to be more difficult to clean. |
Question: | how does this compare with the much more expensive enamel coated version? and why |
Answer: | Much better. I have this Lodge and the LC enamel version. Trust me on this - never buy this style pan with enamel coating. Grill type pans are more difficult to clean because of the ridges, nooks & crannies. Because cast iron seasons better and becomes more non-stick than enamel, it is MUCH easier to clean with use. My LC is in the garage awaiting disposal. I love LC, but their grill pans should be avoided. |

User questions & answers
Question: | OK for induction stove top |
Answer: | Hi, Thank you for your interest in Cuisinel cast iron! Yes, you can use our cast iron on an induction stove top. Best, Rose |
Question: | How tall is the pan |
Answer: | This is a great pan (got 2) ,love it ! One ☝️ for my son and for me. Biscuit pan for me ,keep it oiled. |
Question: | How does the manufacturer pre-season this pan....i.e., with what materials....resin, oil or |
Answer: | Think of seasoning like this: if a pan says it is "seasoned" by the manufacturer, that simply means it is "food grade anti-rust protection". You can use the cleaning mode on your oven to remove this layer and apply your own although it will heat up your house and stink it up as well with burnt oil. Your best bet is to take some sand paper to it and smooth it out so it's not so rough to remove some of the "seasoning" applied by the manufacturer and then reseason it with whatever you'd like. You can use pretty much anything you have on hand although I'd recommend something cheap but with a high smoke point like peanut oil or canola oil. I personally prefer peanut because when it burns it tends to smell sweet and canola tends to smell fishy. Aside from that if the above paragraph sounds like too much work, just start using it out of the box after washing it well and you'll never have to worry about it. The more you use it the better the seasoning will get. You can use wood, plastic or metal spoons or spatulas but I'd avoid plastic because it'll melt on ya. It will be strong like glass once it's seasoned properly. I personally use a sander on any new cast iron that isn't pre-polished. I know it will wear down over time but I just hate the rough finish it has and prefer to get it broken in quicker. |
Question: | what country was it made in |
Answer: | After much research the best I could find was, it was made in China |
Question: | I returned these cuz i didnt get the handles and scrappers. Why was my refund only $30? Ipaid almost |
Answer: | I don't know. Mine came with the handles. I use them like everyday. The handles are a big help when moving it. My husband doesn't cook, however he is my set up team in the morning. He chooses my pots and skillets. Since I started using thee, he always have one or both on the stove waiting. My mom loves to fry fish and chicken in her cast iron pot. She told me buy cast iron and take care of them and they will out live any skillet I own. So I will get her a set and write the seller about the handles. If doesn't get the handles as promised, I would send it back also, unless the agree to send the handles. The skillets are with keeping. |
Question: | I ordered this item but I didn’t even open it can I return it |
Answer: | Yes you can...even if you did open it you can return it in its original packaging. |
Question: | where are they made |
Answer: | Honestly I don't know but I always assume unless stated "made in america" that it is likely made in China like most things these days |
Question: | how to start with pre seasoned pan out of the box, does it need to b cleaned |
Answer: | i cleaned them and I believe they are already pre-seasoned |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can I leave the silicone covers on while I season them again |
Answer: | No you can't. In the book that comes with it says to use the silicone handles or heavy duty oven mitts when using them so I didn't use them while seasoning. |
Question: | Do they have lids |
Answer: | The company has a lid that you can purchase on Amazon, as I did for the 12inch pan I bought. It works wonderfully with the pan. |
Question: | how to keep food from sticking |
Answer: | Hot pan, cold oil. Keep your pans seasoned. Don't put your food in until your oil is well heated, cold oil will cause your food to stick. Let your food cook a while before you flip or move it. |
Question: | Where were these pans made? Thank you |
Answer: | The skillets are manufactured in China. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can I use broiler for this pan |
Answer: | It is heavy. |
Question: | How heavy is it |
Answer: | It’s made in France the cookware is by no means cheep but it’s the best cookware I’ve ever purchased. If your purchase the skillet get the rubber handle cover it does get hot. The skillet is heavier than traditional cookware but will last forever. |
Question: | In what country is this pan made |
Answer: | Both are made of cast iron and well suited for frying, baking, etc. Lodge pans need to be “seasoned” before first usage, and cleaned without soap. Le Creuset pans are pre-treated to be somewhat non-stick and can be washed with soap (but not in a dishwasher.) So, Le Creuset pans are a little easier to use. They are also very beautiful with their colorful enamel exteriors. That said, I have both Le Creuset and old fashioned iron skillets and love them for their individual strengths. If the price of Le Creuset is too high to suit you, the traditional iron skillets are just as useful! |
Question: | Can I use this exactly like a Lodge cast iron pan |
Answer: | We use this for popping. Add this and flavacol while heating before the popcorn seeds go in and you have movie style popcorn with no additional topping. Yum! |

User questions & answers
Question: | can rubber handle be on while cooking |
Answer: | Hi, Thank you for your interest in Cuisinel cast iron! Yes, you can leave the silicone handle on while cooking. Best, Rose |
Question: | Can you use it on a glass top stove |
Answer: | Yes you can use it on a glasstop and any other heating element including induction. For glass tops, try not to move, or slide the Skillet around while cooking. It may scratch the surface, though it won't affect the heating element. And a note to Chris... Don't use a metal pad. Use a pinch or two of course Kosher Salt in the pan and scrub. The salt will release the sticky foods and clean the pan. Seasoning the pan regularly will build the anti-stick properties of the skillet. Over time it will become completely non-stick if properly cared for and seasoned. I use a number of Cast Iron pots and pans, and am a Home and Personal Chef. They are awesome cooking devices! |
Question: | Made in the USA |
Answer: | Lodge is made in the USA. So is Finex, Field, Butter Pat, Stargazer, and others. Lifetime warranties, better pans |
Question: | Why is the surface bumpy not smooth at all, I have never seen a CI pan like this |
Answer: | All pre seasoned Skillets come that way, I researched on Google before I purchased and learned what to do so I wouldn't have to go thru the process taking months to get the pan seasoned properly. Use sandpaper on both sides until smooth, then oil and leave the oil in the pan until you use it, wipe and reoil for cooking. Please do some research, it's easy to find on google.. C. Diaz..... |
