12 best dutch ovens

A Dutch oven is a versatile and heavy-duty cooking pot or kitchen cookware item known for its ability to perform various cooking tasks. Here is some information about Dutch ovens:

  1. Material: Dutch ovens are typically made of cast iron, although there are also modern versions made of other materials like aluminum or ceramic. Cast iron Dutch ovens are particularly popular due to their excellent heat retention and even distribution.

  2. Design: They typically have thick walls and a tight-fitting lid, both of which help in maintaining a consistent cooking temperature. The lid often has a handle for easy lifting.

  3. Uses:

    • Braising: Dutch ovens are excellent for braising, which involves searing food at high heat and then slow-cooking it in liquid at lower temperatures. The heavy material helps to distribute heat evenly, making it perfect for simmering stews and roasts.
    • Baking: They can also be used for baking bread, casseroles, and desserts. The heavy lid creates a moist environment inside, resulting in dishes with a crispy crust and tender interior.
    • Frying: Dutch ovens are deep enough to be used for deep frying.
    • Soups and Stews: These pots are ideal for making soups and stews because they can hold a large quantity of liquid and maintain a steady simmer.
    • One-Pot Meals: Many one-pot recipes are designed for Dutch ovens, simplifying meal preparation and cleanup.
  4. Seasoning: Cast iron Dutch ovens are often seasoned with oil or fat to create a natural, non-stick surface. This seasoning process helps prevent rust and makes the pot more durable over time.

  5. Maintenance: Dutch ovens require special care, particularly cast iron ones. They should be cleaned without using soap, as it can strip away the seasoning.Instead, they are typically cleaned by scrubbing with a brush or salt. After cleaning, it's essential to thoroughly dry the pot to prevent rust.

  6. Sizes: Dutch ovens come in various sizes, typically measured in quarts. Common sizes include 5-quart and 7-quart options, but smaller and larger sizes are also available to suit different cooking needs.

  7. Variations: Some Dutch ovens have enameled coatings on the interior and exterior. These enameled Dutch ovens are easier to clean and maintain than traditional cast iron ones and are available in a range of colors.

  8. Price: Dutch ovens can range in price from relatively affordable options to high-end brands, depending on the materials and craftsmanship.

In summary, Dutch ovens are versatile and durable kitchen cookware items that can handle a variety of cooking methods, making them a favorite among home cooks and professional chefs alike. Their ability to distribute heat evenly and maintain consistent temperatures makes them a valuable addition to any kitchen.

Cooking And Caring For Your Lodge Enameled Cast Iron

1. Allow cookware to cool.

2. Although dishwasher safe, hand washing with warm soapy water and a nylon Scrub Brush is recommended to preserve the cookware’s original appearance. Citrus juices and citrus-based cleaners (including some dishwasher detergents) should not be used, as they can dull the exterior gloss.

3. If necessary, use nylon pads or scrapers to remove food residue; metal pads or utensils will scratch or chip porcelain.

User questions & answers

Question: How much does the 3 quart dutch oven weight without the lid
Answer: I'm not sure. But keep in mind these puppies are heavy no matter what. Especially if you're thinking you may have trouble lifting things due to joint issues
Question: How do you prevent the non-enameled areas (like the edge of the lid) from rusting
Answer: This happened to me as well. First time I used it rust dripped into the simmering food and stained the enamel. I haven’t used it since.
Question: Has anyone ordered the 7 quart that does not specify oval? Is it round? I'm cooking on induction and need a round vessel
Answer: I have the 7 qt round. It is absolutely amazing. It cooks exactly like my $360 Le Creuset we got as a wedding gift. The fact that I paid $42 delivered same day as ordered makes everything taste even better. I have used it over a dozen times since receiving it and it cleans up like new. No chips, no damage and I toss it around and treat it like a $42 pot. I have used our Le Creuset only a couple of times in 15 years! I felt like I had to baby it out of fear of damaging it. In fact, we decided to make it a family heirloom - i.e. I won't use it again and will gift it to my daughter when she is married. She is thrilled! Of course, I had to let her believe that the Crockpot was nearly as expensive and the only reason I am keeping the Crockpot is because it is blue. The Le Creuset is red, her favorite color. I figure I'll deal with explaining my lie when the time comes. She's just a tween and has not yet fallen prey to the cynical capitalism that would have her checking prices on Amazon. Hell, maybe I'll be dead when she marries then I don't have to worry about the Crockpot lie (OR paying for her wedding!)
Question: Where is this pan manufactured ? Thanks
Answer: The package insert says made in China.

User questions & answers

Question: Why isn't this dishwasher safe
Answer: Great answer from Bec. Though I have to imagine people are treating it just as roughly with utensils and abrasive sponge pads, that I can't imagine it'd be much different than a run through the dishwasher. Thankfully, my le creuset has been fine in the dishwasher. But it's small and I was looking at this as an alternative. For $45, even if you have to replace it in a few years, you're not out the $300+ of other name brands.
Question: Can this be used for no kneed bread cooked at 450 degrees
Answer: I used it for no kneed bread (at 450) before I read it should only be used up to 400. Worked out great.
Question: Is the enamel used cadmium and lead free
Answer: I'm not sure but it's super thin enamel. Poor quality. Go with Lodge.
Question: What country is this enameled cast iron 6-qt made
Answer: If this is Lodge (and i doubt it, based on coloration and height of the rings on the lid) it is most certainly made in China. Steve L is wrong. Lodge bare cast iron is made in the US, but enameled pieces are not. From the "From the manufacturer" section of the listing for the Lodge (also found on their website) is this clear statement: "Our enameled cast iron is made to our strict specifications by our partner foundry in China."

User questions & answers

Question: will Calphalon honor the warranty if purchased directly from Amazon
Answer: Thank you for your interest in our products. If the 12-inch Classic Nonstick Omelet Fry Pan with Cover is purchased from Amazon we will honor the warranty.
Question: Can this be used on an induction cooktop
Answer: Thank you for your interest in our products. The Calphalon Classic Nonstick 12 Inch Jumbo Fryer is not induction capable.
Question: Is this pfoa free
Answer: Just to clarify this comment...All non-stick pans sold in the US since 2015 must be PFOA (C8) free. However it takes PFOA to create PTFE (C4). The difference is that most of not all PHOA (C8) is burned off by the time PTFE is created. Both are man made By DuPont in Parkersburg WV and contain carbon molecules, PFOA has 8 (C8) and PTFE has 4 (C4) and both contain floride (F). While PTFE is listed as safe up to 400° it however does start to break down little by little at lower temps. There are still many unknowns about long term effects of PTFE much like PFOA was when it was being applied to materials. Lastly, while you may not be absorbing PFOA in your kitchen you are still absorbing PFOA from the plants producing PTFE because PFOA still has to be used to produce the PTFE and carbons escape into the air which eventually makes its way by rain into the water supply. Good or bad I personally just want everyone to be knowledgeable about facts when purchasing.
Question: Is the bottom of this pan 100% flat or is it bowed in the middle/spins easily when the handle is tapped (assuming on a glass top stove
Answer: Was flat to start, warped over time and now it spins around on the glass cooktop everytime you try to stir or flip food. Extremely disappointed, I thought spending 90 bucks instead of 30 bucks i would get a long lasting product. Less than a year.

Le Creuset Signature Enameled Cast-Iron Round Dutch Ovens

The iconic Le Creuset Dutch oven is indispensable in the kitchens of home cooks and professional chefs alike. Long recognized for its strength and durability, cast iron is the prime material for slow-cooking, braising and roasting, thanks to its ability to maintain even and consistent heat. The enameled Dutch oven needs no seasoning, and it’s suitable for both stove-top and oven use.

Cooking with cast iron

Enameled cast iron is a remarkable and robust material that performs well with modern requirements for food preparation and cooking. Whether you choose to stir-fry, slow-cook a casserole, sear a steak or bake a cake, there is a shape that is suitable. Cast iron performs well for either slow cooking or high-temperature searing.

Cast iron can be used reliably on any heat source, including induction, and with any oven or grill. It has the ability to retain heat efficiently, which allows for use of lower heat settings in stove-top and oven cooking. On the table, a hot covered dish will keep food hot for second servings.

Cast iron can also be used to keep foods cold. A chilled dish becomes an ideal cold food server on a hot summer day. It can also be placed in the freezer for food storage or advanced food preparation.

Heat recommendations

Le Creuset cast iron cookware can be used on all heat sources including gas, electric solid plate or radiant ring, vitro-ceramic glass, induction, and ovens fired by gas, oil, coal or wood. When using any glass-topped stove, always lift the pan when moving it; never slide it, as this may damage the stove-top or the base of the pan.

Always match the pan’s base size to the stove-top heat zone to maximize efficiency, and to prevent overheating of the pan sides or damage to the handles.

Gas flames must always be confined to the base area, and must never extend around the sidewalls of the pan. Long handles should be positioned safely where they do not hang over the front of the stove or other heat zones.

Cleaning and Care

Always cool a hot pan for a few minutes before washing.

Do not plunge a hot pan into cold water. While Le Creuset’s enamel is designed to be the most durable on the market, thermal shock may still occur, resulting in cracking or loss of enamel.

If there are food residues, fill the pan with warm water and let soak for 15 to 20 minutes before washing. A brush can be useful for removing small food deposits, or for cleaning between the ribs on grills. Do not use scourers or abrasive cleaners on the cooking surface. Nylon or soft abrasive pads or brushes can be used to remove stubborn residues.

To avoid damaging the enamel, do not use metallic pads or harsh abrasive cleaning agents.

Light stains or metal marks caused by metal tools can be removed with Le Creuset cookware cleaner. An occasional cleaning with this product will also retain the new appearance of your pans.

Never store pans while they are still damp. Store pans in a dry cupboard or airy space away from steam.

User questions & answers

Question: what is the cover handle made of
Answer: The one I received does NOT have a stainless steel handle. It appears to be a plastic of some kind. How will this work if baking at high temps in oven?
Question: Can this pot withstand an oven temperature of 450 degrees
Answer: I just got one today and the box says 400 as well as the internal brochure. I should have looked at these questions beforehand as the Sourdough Bread recipe I want to use it for calls for 500. Now I'm leery about it and maybe should have purchased a less expensive pre seasoned cast iron Dutch Oven. I haven't used it yet, but it seems of good quality. I wish the description would have stated its temperature limitations.
Question: Is this pan enamel in the inside
Answer: YES, the inside is enamel...i LOVE IT !
Question: Where is this made
Answer: Made in China. used it numerous times to make stews. good heat distribution ,cleans easily. I use wooden utensils, do not know how metal spoons or other metal utensils react to enamel surface.

User questions & answers

Question: Just received my dutch oven in the mail. It is peeling around the edge and on the handle. What is this and what do I do about it? Thanks in advise for any/all advise
Answer: Sounds like the "preseasoning" is wearing off- no biggie, because their preseasoning's really no substitute for good ol' fashioned home seasoning. Give it a nice scrub (without soap, just water and elbow grease), dry it well, oil it up, and run it in a 350F oven for awhile, to start the seasoning process again. Over time, it'll get even better, with use and subsequent oilings and heatings. Alternatively, you could send it back, but really, you'd have to do this same process with a "perfect" one- there's nothing wrong with it, so long as it's not pitted with rust, or cracked. :) Congrats on your purchase- you'll be amazed at how many things you'll use it for.
Question: Is this 7-quart Dutch oven the best size for Jim Lahey's Perfect Bread recipe
Answer: I have the 5 quart and have made several loaves of bread in it. The recipe I have calls for 3 cups of flour. Perfect size oven for that size recipe. Haven't had one single loaf of bread stick to the pot. If you might want a larger pot for other cooking, you might prefer the 7 quart, otherwise, as others have said, 5 quart should do. It's a heavy pot, so a 7 might be more awkward to remove from oven.
Question: IS THIS MADE IN USA
Answer: Yes. All Lodge non-enameled cast iron cookware is made in the USA. On the other hand, Lodge enameled cookware, which this product is not, has to be manufactured out of country. It is my understanding that the enameling process is not allowed in this country. Anyway, rest assured, this product is fine.
Question: Can anyone give me the inside diameters at the top AND bottom for this? I want to use it with an existing fry basket and I need to make sure it will fit. Thanks
Answer: Oven measure 11.75" at the top, and 9" at the very bottom. However, the bottom is rounded at the edge, so it measures 10" about 1/2" above bottom. Total depth is 5".

Le Creuset Signature Enameled Cast-Iron Sauteuse Dutch Ovens

A Sauteuse pan has sloping sides and a large surface area ideal for simmering and reduction. It's a versatile shape that also works for searing, sauteing, braising and frying.

Its cast iron construction enhances the cooking process by evenly distributing heat and locking in the optimal amount of moisture. The interior enamel resists chipping and cleans evenly, and ergonomic handles provide a secure grip, even while wearing oven mitts.

Answer: The box mine came in says "Made in China". The surface inside is smooth like shown in the pictures.
Question: Are you supposed to oil and bake it after every time you use it

Question: What is the highest temperature I can use with this
Answer: So far I’ve used it up to 550 with no issues
Question: Where is it made
Answer: Made in China - Too thin
