13 best cast iron pans

Cast iron pans are versatile and durable cookware items that have been used in kitchens for generations. They are valued for their ability to heat evenly and retain heat, making them ideal for various cooking methods.

Key information about cast iron pans:

  1. Material: Cast iron pans are made from a combination of iron and small amounts of carbon. The iron is melted and poured into a mold to create the pan's shape. They can have a rough or smooth cooking surface, depending on their design.

  2. Even Heating: Cast iron has excellent heat retention and distribution properties. This means that once it gets hot, it stays hot, providing even heating across the entire cooking surface. This makes it perfect for searing, frying, and baking.

  3. Versatility: Cast iron pans can be used for a wide range of cooking methods, including frying, sautéing, roasting, baking, and even grilling. They can go from stovetop to oven seamlessly.

  4. Non-Stick Properties: With proper seasoning and maintenance, cast iron pans can develop a natural non-stick surface. Seasoning involves applying a layer of oil or fat to the pan and heating it to create a protective, non-stick coating.

  5. Durability: Cast iron pans are known for their longevity. When properly cared for, they can last for generations and often improve with use. They are virtually indestructible if maintained correctly.

  6. Maintenance: Cleaning and maintaining cast iron pans is crucial to their longevity and performance. After use, they should be cleaned with minimal soap and water (avoid harsh detergents), dried thoroughly, and lightly coated with oil to prevent rust.

  7. Rust Prevention: Cast iron pans are susceptible to rust if not properly maintained.Keeping them dry and well-seasoned is essential to prevent rust from forming.

  8. Types: Cast iron pans come in various shapes and sizes, including skillets, grill pans, griddles, Dutch ovens, and more. Each type is designed for specific cooking tasks.

  9. Health Benefits: Cooking in cast iron can add a small amount of iron to your food, which can be beneficial for individuals with iron deficiencies. However, it's essential not to overdo it, as excessive iron intake can be harmful.

  10. Seasoning: Seasoning is an ongoing process for cast iron pans. Regularly applying a thin layer of oil and heating the pan helps maintain its non-stick surface and prevents rust.

  11. Cost: Cast iron pans are relatively affordable, especially considering their durability and long lifespan.

  12. Heritage and Collectibility: Many people treasure heirloom cast iron pans passed down through generations. Vintage cast iron cookware from certain manufacturers can also be highly collectible.

In summary, cast iron pans are prized for their durability, even heating, and versatility in the kitchen. With proper care and maintenance, they can become cherished kitchen tools that improve with age, making them a valuable addition to any cook's arsenal.

Ready to Use: Factory Seasoning

To provide you with ready to use cast-iron skillets, all our cast-iron cookware pass through factory pre-seasoning stage in which soy-based oil is used on these high head allowing the polymers to create an initial layer of seasoning. This one factory seasoned layer is equivalent to 10-15 rounds of normal home seasoning. The normal cast iron seasoning we create at home is attained when the fats and oils used in cooking are collected on the cast iron.

This makes our cast iron cookware completely ready to be used straight out of the box. No initial seasoning is required. However; in order to maintain the factory-seasoned cast iron layer, you need to season it from time to time. Factory seasoning is just a kick-start to your cookware’s seasoning life. Not to forget that seasoning is an on-going course. If you want your cast iron to maintain a perfect black, non-stick patina, then get started with the cooking. Regular use and proper maintenance is the key to a coveted black non-stick surface.

  • Before cooking, rub some olive oil over your cookwares' surface
  • After washing, rub some oil over your cookwares' surface and place it in an oven at low temperature for the oil to seep in

User questions & answers

Question: Is the skillet very sticky to cook? nothing like non-stick
Answer: Surprisingly, no. This skillet is not sticky to cook. Not even cheese really sticks like in some pans, and the skillet cleans easier than I expected.
Question: Is This Dishwasher Safe
Answer: Hand wash with water. Never submerge cast iron or use a dishwasher.
Question: where is this made
Answer: The cast iron skillets made in China that are made for use in the USA have to meet specific FDA regulations. So grab them up quickly as the current administration in Washington DC is getting rid of a LOT of regulations for clean air, clean water, specific regs for cooking utensils made elsewhere. Otherwise get Griswold, Wagner, or Lodge pans all made here in the USA. Or you can go to yard sales, farm sales etc and find one made 75 years ago. But come on! How many great chefs do we have here? As a doctor I love the people who get upset about cast iron pans, then drink sugar sodas (probably #1 for obesity and heart disease) and all processed foods. Folks who go for gluten-free when the only people who need it are those with celiac disease...and so on. These Chinese made pans are cheap---that’s why we buy so much stuff made in China.
Question: Does it protect against firearms
Answer: This is actually a complicated answer that depends primarily energy dissipation. Cast iron's higher carbon content translates to a very stiff molecular structure of iron, carbon, silica, and impurities; which is physically very hard and has more ceramic / brittle characteristics than ductile metals. Cast iron won't bend; structural failure is driven by unpredictable and catastrophic crack propagation. Cast iron will shatter like a clay pot in a direct strike, but has a very high surface hardness, resilient to compression and superior at deflecting less-hard materials. If you bought 20 or so skillets and embedded them in a matrix of rubber and kevlar at varying surface normal angles, it would protect against smaller firearms. Need thicker plate for bigger rounds.

User questions & answers

Question: Whith what OIL was it seasoned
Answer: Our cast iron had been seasoned with Kosher Certified Palm Olein for years. We changed the seasoning to organic Flaxseed oil on the second half of 2017, which has had better results in testing, and skillets with that seasoning started hitting store shelves in August 2017. So both oils are vegetable oils baked at super high temperatures, but we just changed from Certified Kosher Palm Olein to Flaxseed, which is not certified Kosher. If you buy one today from Amazon, it'll be a flaxseed oil pan.
Question: Where made country
Answer: Colombia
Question: Is this skillet dishwasher safe
Answer: No! Cast iron pan without porcelain enamel should never be placed in dishwasher.

Question: Where are the pans sold through Amazon manufactured
Answer: Lodge has always taken pride that all of it's cast iron products are made in the USA. Note that Amazon also offers other cast iron products that are not made in the USA.
Question: Is the surface smooth or pebbled? have read several reviews complaining about the new surface
Answer: The preconditioned surface us ok but I sand all my pans down to raw metal then I coat them with organic flax seed oil and place in a500 degree oven upside down for 2 hours let it cool. Then I do it again at least 2 to3 more times. This bakes on a protective coating. Have a lot of lodge pans and griddles. Love them and they will serve you well for many years
Question: How good does thie bristle brush work
Answer: Frankly, while I love Lodge cast iron, I was a little disappointed in the bristle brush. I would have preferred a brush with stiffer bristles that would more aggressively attack the stuck-on residue on the pots and skillets.
Question: How deep of the pan? What does it measure from the bottom of the pan to the rim of the pan
Answer: I have a 12" skillet. The internal walls measure 2 1/4" . Hope that helps!

Question: induction usage possible
Answer: Yes the rule if a magnet will stick to the bottom it is induction ready I have only used mine on my induction cooktop.
Question: Anyone with experience cooking salmon? Suggestions? Recipies? (I don't like highly-seasoned foods
Answer: 1. season your salmon with some oil seasoning paste (oil + seasoning+ salt+ other spices of your choice). Let rest for 10-15 mins for the oil seasoning paste to be absorbed into the fish. If you don't like highly-seasoned foods, then make sure you buy good quality salmon, and you can just season it with some salt and a thin layer of oil, then adding some fresh lemon juice before serving. If you want to skip the oil too, then you need the part of the salmon that has more fat)2. Heat the pan until very very very hot, you don't need to put oil into the pan.3. Use medium high heat. Put the fish with the side you want to present on the plate DOWN. Seal for 2-4 mins depending on the thickness of your salmon.4. Flip the fish when you see the meat is almost half way cooked (you will notice the cooked part has a slightly different color)5. Turn OFF the heat or turn the heat down to low, because the heat from the pan will cook the meat for you and this process will prevent from over-cooking your fish.6. Cook for about 2 to 3 mins or until you see the color of the fish meat is slightly pinkish and when you press the fish with your finger the meat will not bounce back.7. Serve with some freshly cut lemon wedges, the squeeze the lemon juice on the fish before eating.
Question: The best way to clean a cast iron grill pan
Answer: Cast iron cookware is my favorite! I usually just rinse with hot water and use a mild scrubber on mine. After some time, however, my cast iron gets buildup on the sides - I put the pans in the self-cleaning oven and they come out like new. They do have to be re-seasoned but that doesn't take much effort. I'm sure it would work fine on this ridged pan that is sure to be more difficult to clean.
Question: how does this compare with the much more expensive enamel coated version? and why
Answer: Much better. I have this Lodge and the LC enamel version. Trust me on this - never buy this style pan with enamel coating. Grill type pans are more difficult to clean because of the ridges, nooks & crannies. Because cast iron seasons better and becomes more non-stick than enamel, it is MUCH easier to clean with use. My LC is in the garage awaiting disposal. I love LC, but their grill pans should be avoided.

User questions & answers

Question: Does this come with the glass lid
Answer: No it does not come with a lid of any kind.
Question: what temperature can this go in the oven
Answer: Le Creuset indicates that cast iron products with integral handles can be used at *any* temperature in the oven. If you buy one of their products with a knob, I think the top temp is 375° F.
Question: Is this skillet really made in France or is it going to say made in Thailand when i get
Answer: THE SKILLET WAS MADE IN FRANCE AND IS EXCEPTIONAL IN QUALITY AND PERFORMANCE. IF YOU HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY OF OWNING ONE, YOU WILL NEVER USE ANY OTHER. HOPE THI ANSWERS YOUR INQUIRY. BEST, GARRISON.
Question: One review says it cooks everything and never mentions 'sticking'. Another reviewer said for health reasons they love this product but it is sticks
Answer: They're getting it too hot and/or turning their food too soon. Using cast iron is different than the thin, non-stick pans a lot of people are accustomed to. You rarely need your heat turned up past medium. For the best results, use a small amount of oil and heat the pan up slowly. I start on low and kick it up after five minutes or so, and then I give it a couple more minutes before I add the food (I cook fish in mine a lot). Resist the temptation to turn it over right away. If you wait a proper amount of time, it should flip perfectly. There are instructions included as well, which are worth a read. I personally love all of my Le Creuset...if you take care of it, it'll last forever. I've read reviews by people that inherited theirs from grandmothers etc.

Le Creuset Signature Iron Handle Skillet

Le Creuset's Signature skillets feature a helper handle for easier lifting and added control when moving between stove-top, oven and table.

Cast iron skillets have long been treasured kitchen staples for stove-top frying and oven baking. Over time, the matte black interior enamel develops a natural patina that is ideal for searing and frying. Pour spouts on two sides allow for drip-free pouring.

Cooking with cast iron

Enameled cast iron is a remarkable and robust material that performs well with modern requirements for food preparation and cooking. Whether you choose to stir-fry, slow-cook a casserole, sear a steak or bake a cake, there is a shape that is suitable. Cast iron performs well for either slow cooking or high-temperature searing.

Cast iron can be used reliably on any heat source, including induction, and with any oven or grill. It has the ability to retain heat efficiently, which allows for use of lower heat settings in stove-top and oven cooking. On the table, a hot covered dish will keep food hot for second servings.

Cast iron can also be used to keep foods cold. A chilled dish becomes an ideal cold food server on a hot summer day. It can also be placed in the freezer for food storage or advanced food preparation.

Satin Black

Satin Black enamel can be found on skillets, grills, frying pans, saute pans, woks and tagines. Satin Black enamel has a smooth feel but is not as glossy as other light-colored interior enamel finishes. It has been specially designed for higher surface temperature cooking, which is not the same as simply using a piece on a high heat.

Higher surface temperatures can be achieved by allowing any piece to heat thoroughly on a medium setting. This makes the satin black interior ideal for frying, grilling and searing.

Satin Black enamel will keep its good looks and allow a patina to build on its surface with continued use. A patina is the result of the natural oils and fats from foods baking on to the hot surface. The patina should not be cleaned off, as it enhances the cooking performance and the release of foods. It also reduces the need for surface oiling.

With the higher surface temperatures achieved during frying, grilling and searing, sugars and some enzymes will cause caramelization.

Cleaning and Care

Always cool a hot pan for a few minutes before washing.

Do not plunge a hot pan into cold water. While Le Creuset’s enamel is designed to be the most durable on the market, thermal shock may still occur, resulting in cracking or loss of enamel.

If there are food residues, fill the pan with warm water and let soak for 15 to 20 minutes before washing. A brush can be useful for removing small food deposits, or for cleaning between the ribs on grills. Do not use scourers or abrasive cleaners on the cooking surface. Nylon or soft abrasive pads or brushes can be used to remove stubborn residues. To avoid damaging the enamel, do not use metallic pads or harsh abrasive cleaning agents.

Light stains or metal marks caused by metal tools can be removed with Le Creuset cookware cleaner. An occasional cleaning with this product will also retain the new appearance of your pans.

Never store pans while they are still damp. Store pans in a dry cupboard or airy space away from steam.

User questions & answers

Question: OK for induction stove top
Answer: Hi, Thank you for your interest in Cuisinel cast iron! Yes, you can use our cast iron on an induction stove top. Best, Rose
Question: How tall is the pan
Answer: This is a great pan (got 2) ,love it ! One ☝️ for my son and for me. Biscuit pan for me ,keep it oiled.
Question: How does the manufacturer pre-season this pan....i.e., with what materials....resin, oil or
Answer: Think of seasoning like this: if a pan says it is "seasoned" by the manufacturer, that simply means it is "food grade anti-rust protection". You can use the cleaning mode on your oven to remove this layer and apply your own although it will heat up your house and stink it up as well with burnt oil. Your best bet is to take some sand paper to it and smooth it out so it's not so rough to remove some of the "seasoning" applied by the manufacturer and then reseason it with whatever you'd like. You can use pretty much anything you have on hand although I'd recommend something cheap but with a high smoke point like peanut oil or canola oil. I personally prefer peanut because when it burns it tends to smell sweet and canola tends to smell fishy. Aside from that if the above paragraph sounds like too much work, just start using it out of the box after washing it well and you'll never have to worry about it. The more you use it the better the seasoning will get. You can use wood, plastic or metal spoons or spatulas but I'd avoid plastic because it'll melt on ya. It will be strong like glass once it's seasoned properly. I personally use a sander on any new cast iron that isn't pre-polished. I know it will wear down over time but I just hate the rough finish it has and prefer to get it broken in quicker.
Question: what country was it made in
Answer: After much research the best I could find was, it was made in China
Question: I returned these cuz i didnt get the handles and scrappers. Why was my refund only $30? Ipaid almost
Answer: I don't know. Mine came with the handles. I use them like everyday. The handles are a big help when moving it. My husband doesn't cook, however he is my set up team in the morning. He chooses my pots and skillets. Since I started using thee, he always have one or both on the stove waiting. My mom loves to fry fish and chicken in her cast iron pot. She told me buy cast iron and take care of them and they will out live any skillet I own. So I will get her a set and write the seller about the handles. If doesn't get the handles as promised, I would send it back also, unless the agree to send the handles. The skillets are with keeping.
Question: I ordered this item but I didn’t even open it can I return it
Answer: Yes you can...even if you did open it you can return it in its original packaging.
Question: where are they made
Answer: Honestly I don't know but I always assume unless stated "made in america" that it is likely made in China like most things these days
Question: how to start with pre seasoned pan out of the box, does it need to b cleaned
Answer: i cleaned them and I believe they are already pre-seasoned
