13 best ceramic chawans
Ceramic chawans, often referred to simply as "chawans," are traditional Japanese tea bowls specifically designed for preparing and drinking matcha, a powdered green tea. These bowls are highly regarded in Japanese tea culture and are considered an essential element in the Japanese tea ceremony, known as "chanoyu" or "sado." Here is some information about ceramic chawans:
Design and Aesthetics: Ceramic chawans come in a wide range of shapes, sizes, colors, and designs. Each chawan can be a unique work of art, often handmade by skilled artisans. The aesthetics of a chawan are an important aspect of the Japanese tea ceremony, and they may reflect the changing seasons or specific themes.
Materials: Chawans are primarily made from ceramic or porcelain, although other materials like stoneware and earthenware may also be used. The choice of material can influence the texture, thickness, and appearance of the chawan.
Glazing: Chawans are typically coated with a glaze that not only adds to their visual appeal but also helps to protect the ceramic and make it easier to clean. The glaze can vary from glossy to matte, and it may affect the way light interacts with the chawan's surface.
Size and Shape: Chawans come in different sizes and shapes, and the selection of a particular chawan can be based on the type of tea being prepared and personal preferences. Some chawans have wide, shallow shapes, while others are deeper and narrower.
Function: Chawans are designed for whisking and drinking matcha. They have a wide and open top that allows for efficient whisking of the tea, creating a frothy and creamy consistency. The shape also facilitates the enjoyment of the tea's aroma.
Tea Ceremony: In the traditional Japanese tea ceremony, chawans are used by the tea master to prepare matcha and then offered to guests as a symbol of hospitality and respect. The careful selection of the chawan for each guest is part of the ritual.
Maintenance: Ceramic chawans should be cleaned with care, using warm water and a soft cloth. Avoid harsh scrubbing or abrasive materials that could damage the glaze or surface of the bowl.
Collectibility: Some ceramic chawans are highly collectible due to their craftsmanship and historical significance. Antique and vintage chawans, especially those created by renowned potters, can be valuable.
Ceramic chawans hold a significant cultural and aesthetic value in Japanese tea culture. They serve as a bridge between art, nature, and the tea ceremony, enhancing the sensory experience of enjoying matcha. Whether used in formal tea ceremonies or for everyday enjoyment of matcha, ceramic chawans are a symbol of Japanese craftsmanship and reverence for tradition.

User questions & answers
Question: | what country is this made from |
Answer: | Bowl & packaging don't indicate the country of origin. Amazon lists the brand as SAY HO UM. Trying to follow that link lead to a site in Japan but didn't indicate if that was a manufacturer or just a distributor. For what it's worth, I'm very happy with the bowl. It looks & feels handcrafted. Size is perfect. |
Question: | Are all 4 styles of these matcha cups guaranteed to be lead free? Also, can these stack on top of each other for storing? Thank you |
Answer: | I can assure you these are beautiful! I only purchased one for a gift but was more than pleased but have no idea if they stack. Generally items like this are each slightly different in shape so stacking may be difficult |

Life Is Like a Cup of Tea, It’s All In How You Make It.
Did you know the best kept secret about making a tasty cup of matcha?
It's hidden in a matcha tea bowl. All - the shape, the size, the weight and the materials, the tea cup is made of, matter greatly. That's why choosing the right kind of matcha chawan can be a difference between the lumpy choir and effortless matcha making experience.
The bowls that have wide opening, but visible smaller bottom diameter are used for rice. Whipping green tea powder in such bowls is difficult due to restricted hand movement. The correct and easiest way to prepare your frothy matcha tea is to use a traditional wide cylinder like shape - same diameter at the top and at the bottom. This allows you to move your wrist in quick zig zag motion rather than forwards and backwards - just like Japanese do while preparing matcha tea in ceremonies.
Our Japanese inspired, created with a help of experienced craft masters, custom made matcha tea bowls have traditional Han-Tsutsu-Gata shape, large enough diameter to effortlessly move your wrist, nice weight to it for added stability. They are crafted from highest grade porcelain ceramics which is known for its durability and high temperature resistance.
We want you to have the best matcha experience and the easiest and pleasant preparation every time.
***Please be informed that matcha tea is not supposed to be prepared with boiling water. Therefore, matcha cups are never designed to be heat proof. The general advice is that you should pour water at 160F (70C) maximum temperature and then whisk the tea to frothy foam before drinking - this lowers tea temperature even more.
Traditional Shape
► For Effortless Matcha Preparation
Our authentic Han-Tsutsu-Gata, meaning half cylinder in Japanese, style chawan allows your hand to whisk in fast and light zig zag motion without tiring out the wrist and leaving lumps of matcha on the bottom. Enjoy a healthy cup of matcha traditional and easy way.
Wabi Sabi Uniqueness
► Have One Of A Kind Matcha Bowl
Due to handcrafted nature, each of our ceremonial matcha bowls is slightly different in shape and waterfall pattern making no two actual green matcha tea cups the same. Embracing the beauty and originality of these tiny differences (Wabi Sabi) is an integral part of traditional Japanese aesthetics and the celebration of uniqueness.
Japanese Quality Standards
► Finest Ceramics & Glazing

Why Should You Just Give It A Try?

- Details and colors of the images might be different from ones of real products because the position of ware relative to the fire and the way of covering with a glaze might produce unevenness on the patters and shapes. Dishwashable however, it is recommended that you wash your valuable tableware by hand because washing it in a dishwasher may cause it to crack and break. Putting thin cloth or paper between tableware is recommended when the tableware is stacked.

Answer: | I ordered a 10.5 i normally wear a 10. Doesnt run small like chinese knock offs |
Question: | Is the bowl ceramic or wood |
Answer: | This is a fine needle. Technically, you should be using a larger set up for priming. Use this needle fir fine detailed work. |
Question: | is the bowl ceramic or plastic |
Answer: | I had to sand down this needle so it would slide better. Mine also came bent. I was not impressed with this company. I used an 800 grit paper. Works now but because the finish is gone, it allows paint to stick more to the needle. I plan on polishing the needle with steel wool to see if the performance improves. |
Question: | Where’s this made |
Answer: | Yes it will. It fits the Badger 105 as well as the 155 and 360. |
