10 best gsi percolators
GSI percolators are a type of coffee brewing equipment designed for outdoor and camping use. They are manufactured by GSI Outdoors, a company known for producing outdoor gear and camping equipment. Here's some information about GSI percolators:
Construction: GSI percolators are typically made from durable materials such as stainless steel or aluminum. This construction ensures that they can withstand the rigors of outdoor use and are resistant to rust and damage.
Design: These percolators are designed for ease of use in outdoor settings. They often feature a classic percolator design with a wide base, a coffee basket, and a clear knob on the lid that allows you to monitor the brewing process.
Sizes: GSI percolators come in various sizes to accommodate different group sizes and coffee preferences. You can find options ranging from small percolators suitable for solo campers to larger models for group camping.
Brewing Process: Percolators work by cycling hot water through coffee grounds to brew coffee. The water is heated on a stovetop or a campfire, and it rises through a tube to the top of the percolator, where it drips down over the coffee grounds. This process is repeated until the desired strength of coffee is achieved.
Portability: GSI percolators are designed to be portable and easy to carry. They are a popular choice for campers and outdoor enthusiasts who want to enjoy freshly brewed coffee while on the go. The handles are typically heat-resistant, making it easy to move the percolator when it's hot.
Easy to Clean: Cleaning GSI percolators is relatively straightforward. They often disassemble easily, allowing you to access all parts for cleaning. This convenience is essential when you're in an outdoor environment with limited access to cleaning facilities.
Quality and Reputation: GSI Outdoors is well-regarded for producing high-quality camping equipment, and their percolators are no exception. They are built to last and deliver a reliable coffee brewing experience in the great outdoors.
In summary, GSI percolators are designed to provide campers and outdoor enthusiasts with a convenient and durable way to brew coffee while on adventures. User questions & answers
Question: | Does the 3 cup version come with the wire bail |
Answer: | Not sure about this product. I looked at this version but went with the GSI Outdoors Glaicer Stainless Percolator with silicon handle. I needed the extra capacity and it looked much better built. I don't know if the one I got comes in a smaller capacity, but I wanted to make coffee for more than 1 person. When these percolators are measured by "cups" this is a coffee cup, not a measured cup. 3 cups would probably fill maybe my standard morning mug and a bit more. If you are looking at something for 2 or more people to have a couple mugs each I would go for 9 or more cup capacity. |
Question: | What is the capacity of these coffee pots in fluid ounces? Does the 8-ounce pot = 64 ounces (2 quarts)? Or are they using some other volume for a "cup |
Answer: | These GSI pots are 5 fluid ounces for each 'cup'. An '8 cup pot' can brew 40oz of coffee, less a bit for steam and water absorbed by the grounds. The smallest cup of coffee on the Starbucks menu is 12oz. Most coffee cups hold 9-15 oz. So, if you want 64oz (about 5-6 average mugs of coffee), you will want the '12 cup' pot. |
Question: | Is this really a 36 cup pot or is it 28 cup and a tip-o on the description? Amazon is the only place I have seen the GSI 36 cup |
Answer: | Yes, It is a 36 cup pot. This Percolator is a Beast!!! You may not fill the water to the rim, because of the coffee holder., but if your boiling just water. Be ready to use two hands when picking this up. :) |
Question: | is this american made |
Answer: | The 14-cup model is stamped "China" on the bottom. Not American made. |

User questions & answers
Question: | For those who have this do these last a long time with daily use? Also instructions say use highest heat setting, will it hurt metal? (electric/gas |
Answer: | mine has lasted for over a year maybe two. I use it on electric stove top. I read people have used it outdoors while camping. it's made very sturdy and I'm sure will last a long time with normal everyday use. |
Question: | Is the basket and stem also made with stainless steel |
Answer: | Yes and works like a charm. You can even take the basket and stem out and reheat the coffee in the pot. |
Question: | Do you need a filter? Is it necessary |
Answer: | Not necessary. We do not. You could use one if you were really particular about suspended solids but grounds do not go through. |
Question: | is the lid removable? I have a similar percolator and the lid is not hinged which makes it easy to wash in the dish washer |
Answer: | The hinge allows the lid to fold all the way to 180 degrees so it sits flat in the dishwasher. I have the 3 cup version and it even fits in the top rack of the dishwasher. |

User questions & answers
Question: | We are using this for camping. Will it work over both the propane stove and the campfire |
Answer: | I have used mine over the campfire many times. Don't see why it wouldn't work over propane. |
Question: | Is it porcelain inside as well as outside |
Answer: | The inside is the same as the outside. |
Question: | says 8cup is that 6oz or 8oz cup, anyone have ideal on totat capacity 1qt,2qt |
Answer: | I just poured five 8-ounce cups of water into the coffee pot. That brought the waterline up to approximately 1/4" below the bottom of the spout. Hopefully, this is helpful to you. |
Question: | I just received this and it was wrapped in plastic with no box and no instructions! I have never used one of these before. Help |
Answer: | Hello, Kristen. Although odd that you did not receive instructions and a box, you can still be okay. Fill the pot to the desired level with cold water. Place the basket and stand inside. Put fresh coffee grounds in the basket. You can heat on a stove or over a camp fire. The water will percolate into the glass atop the pot - it's acutally pretty cool. WHen it stops, the coffee is done. BUT, the handle is probably hot, too - use a mitt. Enjoy! |

Answer: | It was a gift for camping. I would assume it is safe. The only thing on it that would be questionable is the little top place percolator piece. Sorry, hope it helps |
Question: | Where made |
Answer: | Where it’s made is not nearly as important as how poorly it’s made. I have to tell you that it is astonishingly and most stunningly shoddy and cheap. |

Question: | I want to use this as a replacement for the Coleman Stainless stovetop camp percolator. Has anyone done this |

User questions & answers
Question: | Got the percolator and replacement glass top but have to re-learn exactly how much coffee to use for this perfect percolator |
Answer: | 1 max loaded teaspoon per cup + 1 teaspoon for the pot. Now you have to define the volume of your "cup.". Some coffee lots state 6 oz is a " cup. ". This is dinky. My volume "cup" is a good size mug, about 10-12 oz.I I also wad up a piece of aluminum foil and jam it into the pouring spout ( I have an 8 and 12 cup stove top percolator: Farberware Yosemite). I use enough aluminum foil to have a "handle" I can grab to remove before pouring. What is the purpose for my aluminum foil spout plug? It greatly reduces vapor loss during percolating. You may START with 3-4 mugs of water, but if you forget about the coffee pot, you will quickly boil off a mug of water and change the flavor/strength. Set a simple timer for 6-8 minutes of percolation time, or about 16-18 total minutes from the time you apply heat. For coffee? I like Maxwell House Columbian. Tried many other brands, and "high end" designer / coffee snob beans. I keep coming back to Maxwell House Columbian. I have stopped searching for coffee. |
Question: | I bought this and love it. Can you leave the basket in after brewing? That would sure be easier but the instructions say take it out |
Answer: | We live on our yacht. I brew a full pot about every three days. I replace what is served with hot, boiling water directly into the basket to extend the grounds as I start with a full basket of an extra dark, gourmet blend. I leave the basket in with the grounds as when the brew has cooled and one desires a cup of coffee, we heat in the microwave. Also, if you add a scant amount of salt to the fresh grounds before you brew a pot of coffee, the brew does not turn acidic, an old restaurant trick! I love our percolator! |
Question: | Does it work on induction stove top |
Answer: | I just bought this to replace my electric percolator. I saw that many people had answered this question positively. I checked the Yosemite bottom with a magnet and the magnet did not stick but never-the-less it still worked on my Duxtop Induction cooktop. The manufacturer says the bottom was 18/0 stainless which is suitable for induction which is, I'm sure, why it works. I tested it against my regular glass top electric range top the water boiled about twice as fast on the induction cooktop. My method ended up being to set the induction cooktop to high until the water boils then turn down the power to 2 (500W, 180 degrees F) and let perc for 6-7 mins. Worked like a charm. |
Question: | Is the filter basket and stem made of stainless steel also or aluminum |
Answer: | Do NOT be fooled. You still need to use a Paper coffee filters in this basket. There is a certain type of Unhealthy oil material that comes off of All coffee..Only the coffee filter can catch it.If you notice with this is sold separate, Melitta 628354 Disc Coffeemaker Filters - Pack of 2 (200 Filters total)by Melitta ...Btw Dr. Oz talks about the need for coffee filters all the time even if your coffee pot comes with the mesh, or percolator , for a good reason. |
