3 best percolator for camping
A percolator for camping is a coffee-making device designed for outdoor enthusiasts who want to brew coffee while camping, hiking, or in other outdoor settings. These percolators are specially designed to withstand the rigors of camping and provide a simple and effective way to brew coffee over a campfire or portable stove. Here are some key points about percolators for camping:
Percolators: A percolator is a type of coffee maker that brews coffee through a continuous cycling of hot water. It typically consists of a metal or enamel pot with a central tube and a basket or chamber for holding coffee grounds. As the water heats, it is forced up the central tube, over the coffee grounds, and then drips back down into the pot, creating a cycle that extracts flavor and aroma from the coffee.
Camping Compatibility: Camping percolators are designed to be compact, durable, and portable. They are often made from stainless steel or aluminum to withstand outdoor conditions, including exposure to heat and open flames. The design aims to make them easy to carry and use in a campsite.
Brewing Process: To brew coffee with a camping percolator, you typically add water to the pot, place coffee grounds in the basket or chamber, and then heat the percolator over a campfire or portable stove. The water cycles through the coffee grounds, extracting the coffee's flavors. The process continues until you achieve your desired coffee strength.
Capacity: Camping percolators come in various sizes to accommodate different group sizes. You can find smaller percolators for solo camping or larger ones suitable for brewing coffee for a group of campers.
Coffee Quality: The coffee brewed with a percolator tends to be stronger and richer compared to other brewing methods. The longer contact time between water and coffee grounds can result in a robust flavor, making it a popular choice for campers who enjoy a bold cup of coffee.
Maintenance: Camping percolators are relatively easy to clean, with most parts being removable for washing. Proper care is essential to maintain the percolator's longevity.
Alternative Options: While percolators are a classic choice for campers, there are other portable coffee-making options available, such as pour-over coffee makers, French presses, and single-cup brewing systems, each with its unique brewing method and coffee flavor profile.
In summary, a percolator for camping is a specialized coffee-making device designed for outdoor enthusiasts. It offers a simple and rugged way to brew coffee in the great outdoors, with an emphasis on durability, portability, and a strong, flavorful brew. It falls within the broader categories of coffee makers, kitchen dining, and home kitchen products.

FROM THE INTRODUCTION
THE SIMPLE MAXIM, “The trail provides,” burns bright in the hearts of many backpackers. But what does the trail provide—or what does this trail provide? The Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail (PCT) offers a spectacular footpath tracing a route from the Southern California desert to the snowbound mountains of the Washington/Canada border. But it also provides the opportunity to experience peace, joy, love, reflection, accomplishment, and transformation.
To help guide your exploration of this iconic trail, this book covers the ground between its sunny southern terminus in Campo and the iconic alpine beauty of Yosemite National Park’s Tuolumne Meadows almost a thousand miles to the north. This segment of the PCT offers not only some of California’s most mesmerizing scenery but also some of the trail’s most challenging terrain. You’ll sweat a lot, but every drop is worth the magic experienced while walking this enchanting—and possibly life-changing—path.

From The Introduction
The Wonderland Trail is a spectacular 90-plus mile loop that encircles the base of Mount Rainier, gaining and losing about 22,000 cumulative feet along the way. It runs through fragrant subalpine meadows, angry river valleys, and mossy forest floors, leaving your head spinning and your eyes longing for more. Around each turn is something new, unique, and unusual. Nature is the masterpiece on display in the gallery that is the Wonderland Trail.
At the center of the gallery stands Mount Rainier at 14,410 feet. A Northwest icon and legend to mountaineers, Rainier has dozens of prominent glaciers, along with permanent snowfields and highly eroded slopes. The Wonderland wraps around Rainier, moving up and down, showcasing the many expressive faces of the volcano. At some vistas, Rainier appears decrepit, powerless, and crumbly, while at others she appears savage, forceful, and strong.

User questions & answers
Question: | Got the percolator and replacement glass top but have to re-learn exactly how much coffee to use for this perfect percolator |
Answer: | 1 max loaded teaspoon per cup + 1 teaspoon for the pot. Now you have to define the volume of your "cup.". Some coffee lots state 6 oz is a " cup. ". This is dinky. My volume "cup" is a good size mug, about 10-12 oz.I I also wad up a piece of aluminum foil and jam it into the pouring spout ( I have an 8 and 12 cup stove top percolator: Farberware Yosemite). I use enough aluminum foil to have a "handle" I can grab to remove before pouring. What is the purpose for my aluminum foil spout plug? It greatly reduces vapor loss during percolating. You may START with 3-4 mugs of water, but if you forget about the coffee pot, you will quickly boil off a mug of water and change the flavor/strength. Set a simple timer for 6-8 minutes of percolation time, or about 16-18 total minutes from the time you apply heat. For coffee? I like Maxwell House Columbian. Tried many other brands, and "high end" designer / coffee snob beans. I keep coming back to Maxwell House Columbian. I have stopped searching for coffee. |
Question: | I bought this and love it. Can you leave the basket in after brewing? That would sure be easier but the instructions say take it out |
Answer: | We live on our yacht. I brew a full pot about every three days. I replace what is served with hot, boiling water directly into the basket to extend the grounds as I start with a full basket of an extra dark, gourmet blend. I leave the basket in with the grounds as when the brew has cooled and one desires a cup of coffee, we heat in the microwave. Also, if you add a scant amount of salt to the fresh grounds before you brew a pot of coffee, the brew does not turn acidic, an old restaurant trick! I love our percolator! |
Question: | Does it work on induction stove top |
Answer: | I just bought this to replace my electric percolator. I saw that many people had answered this question positively. I checked the Yosemite bottom with a magnet and the magnet did not stick but never-the-less it still worked on my Duxtop Induction cooktop. The manufacturer says the bottom was 18/0 stainless which is suitable for induction which is, I'm sure, why it works. I tested it against my regular glass top electric range top the water boiled about twice as fast on the induction cooktop. My method ended up being to set the induction cooktop to high until the water boils then turn down the power to 2 (500W, 180 degrees F) and let perc for 6-7 mins. Worked like a charm. |
Question: | Is the filter basket and stem made of stainless steel also or aluminum |
Answer: | Do NOT be fooled. You still need to use a Paper coffee filters in this basket. There is a certain type of Unhealthy oil material that comes off of All coffee..Only the coffee filter can catch it.If you notice with this is sold separate, Melitta 628354 Disc Coffeemaker Filters - Pack of 2 (200 Filters total)by Melitta ...Btw Dr. Oz talks about the need for coffee filters all the time even if your coffee pot comes with the mesh, or percolator , for a good reason. |
