Answer:	It measures 2 1/2 inches from the center dowel to the edge of the base. There is a deep setting that the roll of towels sits in, then a raised lip. I believe any roll of towels wider than 2 1/2 inches from the middle of the roll out, would look and/or handle awkwardly.
