10 best hydronic baseboard heaters

Hydronic baseboard heaters are a type of heating system commonly used in residential and commercial buildings. These heaters use hot water or another liquid, such as a glycol mixture, to provide efficient and consistent heating. Here's what you should know about hydronic baseboard heaters:

  1. Operation: Hydronic baseboard heaters operate on the principle of convection. A heating element, often a copper or aluminum pipe, is installed within a metal enclosure. Hot water from a boiler or another heat source flows through this pipe, heating it. As the air surrounding the heated pipe rises, cooler air is drawn in from the room, creating a natural circulation of warm air.

  2. Energy Efficiency: Hydronic baseboard heaters are known for their energy efficiency. The hot water system allows for even and consistent heating, which can be more efficient than some other types of heating systems, such as forced-air systems.

  3. Zoned Heating: Hydronic systems can be divided into multiple zones, each controlled by its thermostat. This zoning capability allows users to customize heating in different areas of a building, potentially saving energy and improving comfort.

  4. Quiet Operation: Hydronic baseboard heaters operate quietly because they don't have fans or blowers. The heat is distributed through natural convection, which is virtually silent.

  5. Installation: Installing hydronic baseboard heaters typically involves running pipes and installing the baseboard enclosures along the perimeter of the room. It's important to have a properly designed and installed system to ensure efficient heating.

  6. Maintenance: These heaters require minimal maintenance. Regular checks of the boiler or heat source and occasional cleaning of the baseboard enclosures are usually sufficient to keep the system running smoothly.

  7. Compatibility with Various Heat Sources: Hydronic systems can be connected to various heat sources, including gas boilers, electric boilers, or even solar thermal systems. This flexibility allows homeowners to choose the most suitable and cost-effective heat source for their needs.

  8. Temperature Control: Hydronic baseboard heaters can be controlled using programmable thermostats, allowing users to set specific temperatures for each zone and adjust heating schedules.

  9. Safety: These heaters are generally considered safe because they don't rely on forced air, which can distribute dust and allergens. However, proper maintenance and safety checks are still essential.

  10. Aesthetics: Hydronic baseboard heaters are relatively unobtrusive and don't require the installation of large ductwork or visible vents, making them a popular choice for those who want a clean and simple look in their living spaces.

In summary, hydronic baseboard heaters provide energy-efficient and even heating through the circulation of hot water within enclosures installed along the baseboards of rooms. They offer zoned heating, quiet operation, and compatibility with various heat sources. When properly designed and maintained, hydronic baseboard heaters can be a reliable and effective heating solution for both residential and commercial spaces.

User questions & answers

Question: is this unit white? or a beige color as shown in the photo
Answer: More an Almond color, not as dark as a beige might be. Nice unit working well. Worth the extra money to not have unit that gets extremely hot as do standard baseboard units.
Question: What is the square footage of space that this unit will heat comfortably
Answer: This is difficult to answer as it depends on the insulation integrity of the space being heated (e.g., how much heat is lost), and the VOLUME of the space (ceiling height). Also, how many of the walls are exterior walls, and how many windows there are and their heat loss. You might find some heat system design calculators on line to help with this.
Question: The info sheet data tells me the unit is only 2.9 inches wide. That could not be correct. What is the actual width of this heater
Answer: The Fahrenheat baseboard heaters are uniformly 2.9" (2-7/8") deep (or thick) and 8.4" (8-3/8") high (or tall). The length or width varies with the wattage; I have 1500-watt units that are 70" long. Go to the Lowe's website to get trustworthy length/width measurements.
Question: Are these quieter than a traditional electric baseboard heater? The frequent tick tick tick of our current heater makes us crazy at night
Answer: To be completely honest, I never hear this running. It is in my home office which is a closed room and I never even know its on except the room is toasty and warm. This office is in an outside building on my property and it is right now 10 degrees outside and snowing and it is 67 cozy degrees in here. So short answer, no you never hear this running.

User questions & answers

Question: Multiple packs prices are incorrect: 1pk- $166.00, 2pk- $644.00, 3pk-$996.00, 4pk- $1,328.00, 5pk- $260.82. can I buy the 5pk for
Answer: We're all customers like you. Best if you talk directly to the manufacturer or Amazon for pricing questions.
Question: do these need to be installed by an electrician? or do they just plug in
Answer: Electrician. In all loving kindness, if you don't understand that this is a 220-240 volt appliance and not the 110-120 volt appliance, then you wouldn't have the expertise to install this yourself. 110-120 volt circuits are what you normally plug your toaster, computer, TV, hair dryer, etc. into, that is, your standard wall plug. 220-240 volt plugs use heavy duty wires and plugs and are used for clothes dryers and kitchen stove/range/ovens. Usually water heaters and baseboard heaters are "hard-wired", that is, bypassing any plug-in and being permanently wired into the 220-240 circuit. You must also have a 220-240 volt circuit breaker in your electrical service box and a 220-240 volt circuit wired to the room you wish to have your heater installed - unless you are replacing a previous 220-240 volt heater. Putting in that type of circuit, stringing the wire from your service box to the room, would be a major task and expense, and require a permit from the local building authority as well as a certified electrician to do the work.
Question: how long is this heater
Answer: the heater is 116.cm, 46 inches or real close to 4 feet long
Question: Is this a left or right wire
Answer: Left wire install was seamless. I can't remember if it had a right side option.
Question: Can i wire 2 or 3 of them together an what size breaker
Answer: I have 3 of them hooked together. An 8', 4' and 2' one. They are on a 20 amp breaker. Always check with an electrician.
Question: Does this require a single pole or double pole t-stat
Answer: Double pole 20 AMP breaker and buy a thermostat individually that mounts to either end or wall thermostat?
Question: Anyone aware of the energy efficiency of this heater
Answer: This is just a standard 1000W baseboard heater there is no efficiency about it. You need a thermostat To control this unit either a wall or unit mount. And the heater will run until it reaches the temp you want.
Question: getting this for a 4 season porch. I need a separate thermostat. Will this work with the Nest thermostat
Answer: No, Nest thermostats don’t operate at “line” voltage(220volts). They operate at much lower voltage and cannot control resistance baseboard type heaters. I’ve been looking for such a smart “line” voltage thermostat and so far haven’t been able to find one.

User questions & answers

Question: which smart thermostat options work with this
Answer: I use the Mysa smart thermostat. It needs a line voltage thermostat which most smart thermostats are not. The mysa works great with mine.
Question: Can this heater be modified to connect on the left
Answer: hello, on the EBHN line of our heaters, any that are made after 8/1/18 will have a dual junction box and can be wired from either end. Thanks!
Question: are there mounting brackets
Answer: They screw right into the wall or baseboard. Easy installation.
Question: I shut it off completely , later i saw that it was still on! even with the thermostat at 0. it was 45. is there an antifreeze setting hidden
Answer: Hello. This would depend on what thermostat you are using to control this heater. The Single Pole thermostats do not have a set "OFF", they only have a HI and LOW setting which is approx. 45F-85F so if the room hits that low temperature the heater will turn on. If you are using a Double Pole thermostat then it will have the OFF setting.

User questions & answers

Question: what are the amps for this unit
Answer: I have my units on 20 amp lines, one on each of two (2) lines. I 'think' they are right around 1500 watts but I have NOT verified this. They have worked very well for me. Their thermostats are not "fine tuned" but are OK. I use a separate thermostat that controls them very close to my settings.
Question: Does this have ptfe in it
Answer: No
Question: Can this unit run safely with the feet/legs removed? I've got an 8" space below a cabinet, and it looks like this is about 1/2 inch too high
Answer: I’ve used this unit for years. I’m actually on my fourth (that’s about 13 years) for a 12 x 15 room. Quiet and efficient. I have only used it with the legs. It does get pretty warm. I don’t think I’d use it without some air underneath. That’s just me and Chicago winters. Good luck - be careful.
Question: How big of a space will this heat
Answer: I use it in a room around 15x10', and it keeps the chill out. I don't think it was meant to be the only heat in a room. For keeping the chill out, I am very satisfied with it.

Question: I need a heater that is 74" long 8"high do you have one that will match
Answer: My system is 220. If your circuit breaker is a double one, you're dealing with 220 not 110.
Question: square foot finished basement in NH. How many units are suggested to install
Answer: Please contact the company direct you purchased from. Question: Are these compatible with aftermarket covers? we are thinking of using something like this.. https://www.amazon.com/dp/b0757rwfz8/ref=sspa_dk_detail_
Answer: This is a single pole thermostat for the Qmark 2500 series baseboard heaters. It has a black and red wire coming off the back.
Question: Can anyone tell me if these heaters are economical or not? I understand that they heat the area in timely manner, but do they save coins
Answer: The range is not expressed numerically. It as pictured from warm to warmer. I don't know of a residential line voltage thermostat with a range that high. We are not allowed to list manufacturers or sources as recommendations other than those which pertain to the listed product but I can tell you that there are commercial stats available for this application which would be remote mounted to achieve the range you refer to although I'm not sure the heater is up to the task. It is certainly not designed to function normally at those temperatures.

User questions & answers

Question: If I order this, will I get a single pole or double pole delivered to me
Answer: You would need to get a RJ45 and crimp it on the cut part, in which case you are better of just getting a plain CAT6 cable and lose connectors and cut to length and do the crimping yourself -- which is hard if you don't know how to -- this product is made for you so you don't have to do all that.
Question: Will this work on a qmark hbb2004 baseboard heater
Answer: If you need 1000ft then the best thing is to buy a standard cable box which is 1000 feet, but you would need to wire on the RJ45 connectors. If you do want to buy the 300 foot cables then you will need to use the CAT 6 couplers to connect them but you will end up with 1200 feet of course.
Question: if it's a double pole then why does it say single pole in the details of product section
Answer: I see no reason you couldn't. I buryed mine in a 8 inch ditch without putting it in any pipe. I have not had any issues. I ran about 250 feet of it under ground and it works awesome.
Question: We bought this in October and have found the knob extremely hard to turn. Is it defective or is there a way to remedy this
Answer: Yes it can be used outside. I have mine ran outdoors through the rain ice and snow and it still works perfectly.

User questions & answers

Question: Dual Wattage, does that mean it can be hard wired
Answer: No, this unit was not designed to be hard wired. It has a suitable electrical cord with a plug on it, intended to be plugged into a 20 amp wall outlet. Dual wattage means it has a high and a low heat output, which is controlled by a switch that comes on the unit.
Question: Is there any sort of safety screen for this? I'd be concerned about small things falling into it, or children pushing small toys into it
Answer: There is no safety screen at all on this heater. You may be able to attach a heat resistant mesh on the outside of the heater for little hands/small things not to find their way into the heater. The heating element does sit way back and inferiorly on the heater but without the screen it is pretty easy for curious hands to find their way into it. Hope this helps.
Question: Is this on oil filled heater
Answer: No. It's a convection resistor with fins.
Question: I just purchased and set up and indeed the smell is awful. For those who stuck it out, how long until the smell dissipates
Answer: It's been a while since I purchased mine, but I left it on for a couple of hours in my garage before I started using it, and there's no smell at all when I use it now.

Question: Can it be installed vertically
Answer: Jennifer,Good morning. The rough opening needs to be 14-1/8" wide. That said, there is a retrofit grille that is 23-3/8" long that is made for applications that need to cover a bigger opening. Give us a call at 800-472-3292 and we'd be glad to assist you with both the heater and grille. Thanks,Jeff CousinsOperations Manager
Question: Does is connect to a 15 amp or 20 amp line
Answer: It comes with a grill for the front. And, it does a great job with heat. The thermostat it comes with is perfect. But...do know that this is really LOUD. We remodeled our kitchen, removing the baseboard heating unit that was there, replacing it with this unit. Sometimes I would rather be chilly than put up with the noise.
Question: What size room is this good for
Answer: No it did not come with a cook book
Question: What controls the fan. Is it controlled by a thermostat that is in the unit. Or does it run all the time
Answer: Yes, with this smoker you will need to open the door to reach the wood chip tray. There is no an outside wood chip loader.
