It's designed to let the coals fall thru to create a full bed of glowing coals. This is what you want. You can always add more logs and they will burn better with the hot coals below.

I use it on my gas stove to keep my cat from rubbing against the glass and burning his tail. It works great for that but as the other reviewer said, it's not really sturdy. It kind of wraps around my stove and serves the purpose for me but I doubt it could stand up against a baby pushing on it if you have a wider fireplace where this would be just sitting out in front of it. It's probably better than nothing at all but if you can find something sturdier with a solid base, you'd be much better off. Or, if you're handy, maybe you could attach some kind of floor braces to the back so it can't fall over when pushed.

Answer:	I honestly cannot answer this, as I ordered this to replace my old one when I stopped using my fireplace. It's very heavy!
Question:	Is the total length of the screen 52 inches? My fireplace is 45 1/2 inches wide, trying to see if this one would be wide enough
Answer:	Yes total length is 52 inches. If you put the screen with flaps little bit in angle then it might be little tight for your fire place. My fireplace is 42 inches and I think the size is just right.
Question:	How thick is the screen perimeter? I have to slide the edges into a set space on our gas fireplace. Thanks
Answer:	As good as I can see, it's a good 1/4 of an inch. This screen is very heavy!
Question:	What are the dimensions of the center panel? Our fireplace is 29", I want to be able to cover the entire fireplace
Answer:	The center panal is 28". We are using it on a 40" opening and it works great! Very nice and heavy!
