13 best fire place grates
Fireplace grates are essential accessories used in wood-burning fireplaces and stoves. They serve several important functions related to safety, efficiency, and convenience. Here's what you need to know about fireplace grates:
Support for Firewood: Fireplace grates are typically constructed from heat-resistant materials like cast iron or steel. They feature a raised grid design that allows you to place firewood on top of the grate.Elevating the firewood helps to improve airflow and combustion by allowing air to circulate beneath the logs. This results in a more efficient and cleaner burn.
Promote Proper Ventilation: By raising the logs off the floor of the fireplace or stove, grates facilitate the circulation of air underneath the fire. This air flow is crucial for combustion, as it supplies oxygen to the fire, helping it burn more efficiently and produce less smoke.
Ash Collection: Fireplace grates also help collect ash and debris that fall from burning logs. The ash falls through the openings in the grate and collects in the fireplace or stove's ash pan or on the hearth floor, making it easier to clean up after a fire.
Extend the Life of the Fireplace Floor: The elevated design of grates helps protect the fireplace floor or hearth from the intense heat of the fire. Over time, exposure to extreme temperatures can cause damage to masonry or flooring materials, so using a grate can help extend the life of these surfaces.
Stability: Grates provide stability to the burning logs, preventing them from rolling out of the fireplace or stove and causing potential hazards.
Variety of Sizes and Styles: Fireplace grates come in various sizes and styles to fit different types of fireplaces and stoves. It's essential to choose the right size grate that matches the dimensions of your fireplace or stove for optimal performance.
Maintenance: To maintain your fireplace grate, periodically remove ash and debris that accumulate in the ash pan or on the hearth. Depending on the material and construction of the grate, you may also need to inspect it for signs of wear or rust and perform any necessary maintenance or replacement.
Safety: Always follow safety precautions when using a fireplace or stove. Keep flammable materials at a safe distance, use a fireplace screen to prevent sparks and embers from escaping, and ensure proper ventilation in the room.
Fireplace grates are a practical addition to your fireplace or wood-burning stove, helping to improve the efficiency of your fire, reduce maintenance, and enhance safety. When selecting a grate, consider the size and design that best suits your specific heating appliance and aesthetic preferences.

Question: | What are the dimensions of this product? They aren't given other than |
Answer: | 2-1/2 inches. |
Question: | How many inches from the ground to the bottom of the grate for the 22X12X |
Answer: | My old grate (melted through) was 24" across the front and 19" across the back and it was a tight fit. So, I called HY-C and the gentleman on the phone told me the measurements on their grates are all +/- 1". Casting is not an "exact science" he said, LOL. He recommended contacting the seller if you have any concerns and asking if they can measure one before they ship. |
Question: | Need exact dimensions please to see if it will fit my smaller fireplace. Is it 22" wide on both sides |
Answer: | I would say yes, its very sturdy, but only use fireplace size logs on it, also place it on a steel plate so the legs sill keep it elevated |

Steps for Buying a Fireplace Grate
- If you have a zero clearance fireplace, measure your existing grate or refer to the owner’s manual for appropriate grate dimensions. For your safety, do not follow the measuring instructions below. Improperly sizing your grate may harm your appliance and may increase your risk of a fire.
- If you have a masonry fireplace, measure the firebox following the instructions below.
- Determine the necessary clearance from the bottom of the grate. If you have a log lighter in your fireplace, measure the height of the log lighter to ensure the fireplace grate will sit over it.
How to Measure For A Fireplace Grate?
- Measure the front width of your firebox
- Measure the back width of your firebox
- Measure the depth of your firebox
- Subtract 6 inches from each measurement to determine the grate size needed
Leaving a 3 inch clearance on each side of grate allows your firebox to have the proper function and airflow. If your grate is too small, there will be too much air flow leading to faster burn times. If your grate is too big, the fire may damage the walls of your firebox.

User questions & answers
Question: | Does it really have a lifetime warranty |
Answer: | The one I bought is - Widest part in front bottom of legs is 18" top grate bars in front is 14" . In the back the widest part of the legs are at 17" and the upper grate is at 12" I'm not sure which one your looking at but this is the one I bought. This is the most attractive sturdy grate I have ever owned. It is big and will hold a lot of wood. Good luck ! |
Question: | Is it measured from leg to leg or between the top bars? My current grate is 20" between front bars (wider between feet). Which size should I buy |
Answer: | Front foot 30" wide, back foot 27.5".grate front to back 15".this is the widest/deepest points. Hope this helps. I think this is how the mfg should measure so you know how to fit in the box. |
Question: | What are the actual dimensions of the 30 inch grate. No BS please. Only answer if you know |
Answer: | It is 21 inches across the back and 16-17 inches across the front. And only 12 inches deep. It actually has a very small usable area due to the way the legs are angled out at 45 degress. The 27 inch size is very deceiving and does not represent how large the grate area itself is. |
Question: | What's the back width of the 27" model |
Answer: | This steel grate is painted black to inhibit rust during shipping. The coating is designed to burn off once you start burning fires on the grate. |
