13 best bed slats
Bed slats are an essential component of bed frames and provide support for the mattress and its occupants. They are typically found in various types of bed frames, such as platform beds, daybeds, and some traditional bed frames. Here's what you should know about bed slats:
Purpose: Bed slats serve as a supportive foundation for the mattress, distributing weight evenly and preventing it from sagging. They offer a sturdy and comfortable surface for sleeping.
Materials: Bed slats can be made from various materials, including wood, metal, or even composite materials. Common wood choices include pine, birch, and beech. Each material has its own characteristics in terms of durability and flexibility.
Design: Bed slats are typically designed to span the width of the bed frame, running horizontally from one side to the other. They are evenly spaced across the frame to provide adequate support.
Spacing: The spacing between bed slats can vary depending on the design and size of the bed. Typically, slats are spaced close enough to prevent the mattress from sagging but with enough gaps for air circulation.
Number of Slats: The number of slats used in a bed frame can also vary. Some bed frames have a few wide slats, while others have numerous narrower slats. The number of slats can affect the overall support and comfort of the mattress.
Attachment: Bed slats are attached to the bed frame using various methods. Some may have slat holders or brackets, while others simply rest on ledges within the frame. Some slats are attached using screws or bolts for added stability.
Adjustability: Some bed frames come with adjustable slats, allowing you to customize the level of firmness and support for your mattress. This feature can be especially useful for accommodating different types of mattresses.
Compatibility: Bed slats are compatible with various mattress types, including innerspring, memory foam, latex, and hybrid mattresses. They provide a solid foundation for these mattresses to rest on.
Maintenance: Bed slats are relatively low-maintenance. Periodic inspections to ensure they remain secure and in good condition are advisable. If a slat becomes damaged or broken, it can usually be replaced without replacing the entire bed frame.
Support and Comfort: The quality and design of bed slats play a significant role in the overall support and comfort of your mattress. High-quality, well-designed slats can extend the lifespan of your mattress and enhance your sleep experience.
In summary, bed slats are an essential component of bed frames, providing support and stability for mattresses. User questions & answers
Question: | What tools are needed for assembly |
Answer: | Nothing. Tools included |
Question: | can I use this directly on the floor for a low profile king bed frame |
Answer: | Of course! My dog is injured and we had to dis assemble our queen bed frame. We put the mattress & box spring directly on the floor. Awful for us! Great for the dog BUT this little bit of support makes a huge difference in the feel of our mattresses. No longer smushy w/o the bed frame and still low enough to floor for the pooch. |
Question: | Will this fit inside of a bed frame? Would like to replace my slats with this |
Answer: | Be sure to measure your current bed frame first. I tried to put this inside my bed frame, but this bunkie board wasn't wide enough to reach the side supports. So it is useless to me, unless I buy some wood from home depot and try to widen the side supports in my current bed frame. |
Question: | How far apart.the the slats |
Answer: | I’ve seen a review stating 3.5”. What’s the exact distance between the slats in the newest revision that’s shipping right now as of March/April 2018? |
Question: | I have a wooden headboard and footboard and wooden side rails: will these slats fit |
Answer: | I don't see why not. |
Question: | Can you use this on a sleeper sofa |
Answer: | Yes. |
Question: | anyone know the space between the slats |
Answer: | 4 inches in between the wood slats, at least for queen |
Question: | Will this work with an ikea frame? Can you put a memory foam mattress right over it |
Answer: | Not sure what would make an ikea frame different, but I put this right over a standard metal frame and the memory foam mattress directly on top. Works great and very comfortable! |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can these slats be cut on one side? My bed is 35", not the standard |
Answer: | Yes. My husband had to do that with ours to fit my son’s bed. |
Question: | What kind of wood? Treated or not |
Answer: | They are made of pine/spruce (soft wood). They are furring strips that can commonly be found at Home Depot, Lowes, or any lumber yard across the country. |
Question: | Are they curved? Or flat |
Answer: | They're flat. |
Question: | Do I need to attach to the bed like regular slats to avoid slippage |
Answer: | Ours just sat on top of the lips inside the side rails, it was a tight fit and the slats did not move. But I would advise against buying this product. The boards used in ours were so weak that a 30lb 4yo was able to break them just jumping once on the mattress. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this support a memory foam mattress |
Answer: | I've used this same frame (the king size) with a 10 inch memory foam mattress. It worked great even with supporting more than 550lbs nightly. To be fair though, our memory foam was thick and very firm. |
Question: | What is the distance between each slat |
Answer: | The slats are 8-inches, center to center, with one down the middle. We do not use box springs with our king size bed, and the mattress is well supported. I hope this helps! |
Question: | What is the maximum hight of an item I can place/store under it |
Answer: | 15 to 15.5 inches depending on flooring ( hardwood or carpeting ) |
Question: | What is the weight capacity for this frame |
Answer: | Significant other and I have a combined weight of over 500 lbs. The frame never even squeaks, no matter what we're doing. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can this replace cheap wooden slats on a wooden queen platform bed that already has a steel center beam installed |
Answer: | Yes and... No. You need to read the dimensions carefully. I ordered this item after reading the answer to this question, under the impression that it would be a simple replacement. It wasn't. That's because "Queen size" (or in my case "twin size" and "full size") is apparently a vague descriptor. The steel slats came about an inch short, so I had to spend a few hours reframing the bed, drilling, screwing. It was a pleasant weekend project, I suppose. These slats are excellent. |
Question: | Could this fit on a basic metal bed frame and take the place of a box spring? It is for my daughter and i don't want it to be too tall for her |
Answer: | Yes. |
Question: | Can this be use with bed frame that doesn't use a box spring |
Answer: | Yes, that is why I bought the frame. Got rid of the box spring |
Question: | what is the space between the steel slats |
Answer: | About 5". If you are concerned because there is space between the slats and it isn't solid, I use this bunkie board with a cheap foam mattress and haven't had any issues (daily use). |

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the exact width of a single slat |
Answer: | I bought the twin and it seemed it needed to have about 3 more slates to fit exactly across. Found out these are ment to be on top of support boards |
Question: | How much weight can these support |
Answer: | Well, to answer your question to the best of my abilities. I bought a flat wooden board to put on top of the planks for stability and a thick deep pocket mattress for my oldest son who weight is around 160/180 lb. and it seems to be holding pretty well so far. I hope this answers your question or at least gives you and idea of approximately how much it can hold. |
Question: | Can these be used with a bedbug mattress cover and a box spring cover as well |
Answer: | Yes. But if you have bedbugs you may have more problems than what these slats can solve. |
Question: | Can this be placed over conventional metal frame, replacing box spring? Goal is to keep mattress, but lower bed |
Answer: | Yes, as long as your frame has some support for the cross bars, it can replace a box spring. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can I use this without a box spring and just lay my mattress on top? Fo I need dlats or a box spring in conjunction with this product |
Answer: | Thanks for your inquiry. The product needs to be used with a box spring. |
Question: | Can this system be used under the "plastic boxes" on which a sleep number bed mattress rests |
Answer: | I would still put at least a layer of wood between the support frame and the mattress. I bought 1x10 yellow pine at Loews and covered the frame making sure the wood rested firmly on the bed frame as well. I used a regular sealy queen. I felt it gave the mattress solid support. I have a sleep number bed myself now. Because they are such an expensive unit, I wouldn't risk damaging the mattress. By the way, I got rid of the frame (nothing really wrong with it though) and went with the support unit with sleep number - the kind that can raise the foot and head. My back has been happy since. But I would never just put the sleep number unit on this frame without some other support - either the pine boards or plywood (3/4). Good luck. |
Question: | Can these be screwed in directly to the wooden rails? do i need to add a bunkie board for additional support even though i have box spring |
Answer: | If you have a box spring no bunky board is required. I mounted my X-support system to the wooden rails that used to support the wooden slats on my bed. Used 6 wood screws to do the job, 3 to a side. My mattress is a heavy king and there are 2 box springs to support it. It all works well, no additional support needed. |
Question: | I have a bed with metal side rails -- will this work with an all-metal frame? One reviewer says it won't, but the product description says it will work with both a metal and wood side boards. What's the story |
Answer: | This is a bit of a mixed answer - It CAN work with just about any metal frame, but it will be a lot easier with some frames compared to others. The support does include the necessary hardware to bolt to a metal frame. The tricky part is that with a wood frame, you simply screw the cross rails down where they rest. Most metal frames will have some holes pre-drilled in them along the rails, but the support may not perfectly line up with all of those holes since it has a fixed spacing between cross rails. With a metal bed frame, the options usually are:1) Rest the "lip" of the cross supports on the inside of your bed rail. Bolt down as many holes as will line up, leave the others resting. This isn't the most secure option, but will still provide good support.2) Drill 1/4" holes in your bed frame using a bit made for metal which will line up with the ends of the cross supports, so you can bolt down all six points.Using this with a metal frame is definitely possible and will provide good support, but it won't be quite as easy as using it with a wood frame. If your metal frame already has some pre-drilled holes, you may want to look at a support such as the Mighty Lift FQU-11 which doesn't have a fixed spacing - This will let you line up the cross rails with the pre-drilled holes. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Has anyone attached a headboard |
Answer: | There were holes on the frame that you could use to attach a headboard, but they did not line up for me. I had a wood headboard so I attached a board brace across from leg to leg, drilled holes in the right place and attached the headboard that way. It was more trouble than I would have liked, but it worked. |
Question: | What is the total weight it can support? I'm about 230 lb and my girlfriend is about 165 lb |
Answer: | What if my mattress weighs 150 lbs and I weigh 210 lbs? Does mattress weight count or not? |
Question: | Is this frame squeaky when in motion lol (im serious |
Answer: | My frame was not squeaky until one of the screws came loose. Now it squeaks in that spot. However if I'm on the other side of the bed it does not squeak. I have had mine for 2 years now |
Question: | Length of twinkle |
Answer: | I’m estimating the twinkle in this case to be approximately 7 and 23/32 sparks, unless you are using Texas sparks, in which case it is 3 and 13/23 sparks because as everybody knows, everything is bigger in Texas. |

User questions & answers
Question: | I need a thin, flat, soundproof, foundation to place on top of the frame and under the mattress. What would your commend |
Answer: | Dear customer, we'd suggest plywood to put between the frame and the mattress. If any question of product, please feel free to contact us. Thank you and Best regards. Yours, 45MinST |
Question: | Whats the storage height clearance under the bed frame |
Answer: | Dear Customer, the storage height under the bed frame is 15.6". Thanks again for your attention. 45MinST |
Question: | My bed is a sleighbed w/wooden rails on each side. Will this work w/ my bed |
Answer: | More than likely not, but it could! The bed actually sits down inside the outer rails, which are about an inch thick. Your wooden rails probably have a ledge for slats and the bed to rest on that may leave the inside space too narrow for the bed. The bed frame, from outside edge to outside edge is 62" by 83". The best thing to do would be to measure from the narrowest inside point of the bed to make sure it will fit! |
Question: | Will this work w/ existing head, foot, and existing wooden rails on my bed |
Answer: | Theoretically it should work to sit down inside of an existing wooden bed frame. However, I would measure the inside dimensions of your bed frame when it's set up to make sure that it will fit down inside without modifying your wooden frame. The frame itself is a few inches larger than the actual mattress. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the difference between the Zinus 1500 model and the 1000 model |
Answer: | There are no legs on the sides of the 1500 model. There are a total of four legs on the 1500 model for the TWIN size. |
Question: | Can this be used with a Tuft and Needle mattress |
Answer: | Jack, I wondered the same thing. Based on my research, the answer is yes--but only if you're willing to modify this bed frame. According to the Tuft & Needle website FAQs, you shouldn't put their mattress on a slatted foundation with gaps between the slats that are any larger than, "3-4 inches". After contacting Zinus customer service to ask how big the gaps are between the slats on this frame (the 14" 1500), Zinus representative Chris Lin informed me that the gaps on this model are 4.6". So, to ensure your T&N mattress is getting the recommended support, you can modify this frame inexpensively by purchasing furring strips or sanded plywood from a home improvement store. Alternatively, a more expensive solution is to look for a bunkie board that has gaps between its slats of 3-4 inches, and place that on top of this frame. |
Question: | How far apart are the slats |
Answer: | On the 1500 FULL model, the slats are 3.25 inches apart. |
Question: | how much weight can it hold |
Answer: | I have this platform bed. I absolutely doesn't support weight up to 2400 pounds. This frame started sagging at 175lbs. We ended up buying extra oak wood to place in between existing slats. That cost us another $30. Also, keep in mind, adding a 10" mattress on top of the frame makes this frame extremely high, (almost 24 inches off the ground). We will cut the legs to lower. The photo doesn't appear it's that high off the floor. The frame arrived in perfect condition and arrived a couple days early. |

Question: | What type of wood is this bed frame? What are the slats made from |
Answer: | The wood is from overseas, so I don't know the wood species. The slits are spaced approximately 5 inches apart and there are a bunch. I found the construction be great. There is center support made of tubular metal with 3 legs. We use it in our spare bedroom for company. My son is 6'5" and weights over 220. Both he and his wife have had no problems sleeping on it. |
