Answer:	I originally bought a plaid one 3 years ago and it never shed. I recently moved and bought a grey one and it sheds so bad, I hate it. Ordered another plaid one and it came last week, so far it's not shedding. So I think it depends on the color and type of the blanket. I also recommend washing but not drying them.

Answer:	Yes, the side rails are hook and latch into the headboard and footboard. Quality and finish are nice. We have an old school mattress and box spring setup and it works great! Not sure how it would work with the newer style mattresses.
