5 best press spray starches

Press spray starches are products used in laundry and household tasks to help achieve crisp and wrinkle-free clothing. They are typically applied to fabric before ironing to make it easier to achieve a smooth and polished finish. Here is some information about press spray starches:

  1. Purpose: Press spray starches are designed to stiffen fabric temporarily, making it easier to iron and reducing wrinkles. They are commonly used on dress shirts, collars, cuffs, and other garments that require a neat appearance.

  2. Application: To use a press spray starch, you typically spray it evenly over the fabric before ironing. After applying the starch, you can then iron the fabric as usual. The starch will help the iron glide smoothly and create crisp creases.

  3. Types: There are different types of starch products available, including aerosol sprays, liquid starches, and powders. Aerosol sprays are the most convenient to use, as they provide an even application, but the choice depends on personal preference.

  4. Starch vs.Sizing: Starch is often confused with fabric sizing. While both products add body and stiffness to fabric, starch is generally used for a more rigid and crisp finish, whereas sizing is used for a softer, less stiff result.

  5. Anti-Static Properties: Some press spray starches may include anti-static agents to reduce static electricity buildup in clothing, which can help prevent clinginess and make garments easier to handle.

  6. Household Uses: Press spray starches are not limited to clothing; they can also be used for household tasks like making crafts or stiffening fabric for sewing projects.

  7. Laundry and Ironing Tips: When using press spray starch, it's essential to follow the manufacturer's instructions for application and ironing temperature. Using too much starch or ironing at too high a heat can damage fabric.

  8. Health and Household: Press spray starches are generally considered safe for use on clothing and household items when used as directed. However, individuals with sensitive skin or respiratory issues may want to be cautious and consider using starch-free alternatives if necessary.

Remember that the effectiveness of press spray starches can vary depending on the brand and formulation, so it's a good idea to test a small, inconspicuous area of fabric before applying it more broadly. Additionally, always read and follow the instructions on the product label for the best results.

User questions & answers

Question: What is in mary ellen's best press. somebody told me it may contain formaldehyde
Answer: I would not use it in the washing machine. I think it would be too diluted and loose it's affect. The iron activates the sizing. This is not like the old fashion starch.
Question: do you use steam with this
Answer: The 16 oz has a sprayer!! I buy this by the gal! But I had bought the 16 oz, so I just keep filling the 16 oz bottle!!
Question: Can I put this (diluted) into a clothing steamer
Answer: I didn't get one with it, I contacted customer service and they said I could return it. It should have come with the spray nozzle as it is pictured.
Question: Is it possible that something was wrong with my bottle? Because it had very little difference, definately not 10 times better, like. claimed
Answer: staining occurs when too much product is applied in one coat. Use very light coats. I never use more than two.

User questions & answers

Question: Is the scent free version clear, or is coloring added as in the picture? I'd rather not spray any dyes on my clothes
Answer: Mary Ellen’s Best Press is a mixture of starch and sizing. While the exact ingredients are not listed, starch for fabric is most often made from Corn Starch (like found on the bakery aisle - to thicken gravies). Starch adds body/stiffness to a fabric. This makes it sturdier to cut using a rotary blade cutter. Sizing is a chemical polymer which aids the warp and weft threads slide easily over one another. It improves the feel of the fabric to aid in handling to cut. Quilters have used corn starch for years. Most people pressed men’s dress shirts with starch for the past 75 years (once cardboard dress collars when out of style). My chemist daughter assures me that formaldehyde does not fall into the same class as the vegetable or synthetic polymers described on Mary Ellen’s website. Like other household chemicals this is a product which should NOT be drunk. Keep away from children. There are several fragrances, and I like the fresh smell it brings to fabrics I am preparing to use. It does not attract bugs. It helps shed dirt from treated cloth...(my cat’s hair easily is removed with a tape roller). The sizing and starch are removed when washed with a laundry detergent. I wash my finished quilts (top sewn, batting, backing, quilted together and bias binding edge sewn into place) before giving them to others. I have no way of knowing who may receive my charity quilts and do not want the starch, school glue which I use on seams, and sizing, to cause any problems.
Question: We need something to stiffen the "vertical pull down accordion paper blinds" on our RV windows. Anyone care to make a guess as to its capability
Answer: I have. but if your quilting I do not use steam.
Question: My recent order did not come with the spray nozzle. Is is supposed to? I just have a bottle with a cap
Answer: I spray my clothes, towels, curtains and bedwears with a MIST atomizer and the steamer does an excellent job with NO effort to remove and keep away wrinkles. FYI, if I can do it, been a guy, you can do it too. Nothing wrong and a better way to lay down on a bed that smells great after a very long stressful day at work.
Question: The title of the product on Amazon says "scent free" but the picture shows a citrus scent. Has anyone bought this product from Amazon? Scent free
Answer: I am an avid quilter. Consequently I do a lot of ironing. I use both regular starch and Best Press; each have pro's and con's. I have used Best Press for years. It doesn't, in my opinion, act exactly the same as regular starch. I use regular starch to stabilize my fabric when I am prepping it for cutting. I use BP as I am piecing to get seams to lie flat and reduce bulk where multiple seams meet. It is superior for that because it relaxes the fibers. Two cautions. 1st I have had fabrics bleed when using BP. Typically blues and reds. 2nd when I have been heavy handed with regular starch--the non-flake kind--BP will cause it to flake. Hope this gives you some perspective. I'm not even going to address the "10 times better" that is just marketing.

User questions & answers

Question: Can i spray this while im working on my quilt top as i iron my blocks
Answer: Hello! Yes, we package this item as securely as possible to prevent leaking. All of the trigger sprays we ship are shipped with a secure top attached and the pump sprayer attachment is included in the box but not attached to the bottle to prevent leaking and accidental spray.
Question: I have severe allergies. Do you have a list of ingredients
Answer: No. This product has a fresh linen scent.
Question: Is this like a wrinkle releaser agent, good for steaming clothes
Answer: Once sprayed on the fabric the stiffen takes place once the fabric is dry. On iron or heat source is only used to speed up the drying process and to eliminate wrinkles.

User questions & answers

Question: Can this be used on knit
Answer: Some people have been using the same refill for years. The length of time all depends on use and care. For example, if you accidentally burn the pads, then you will need to replace them. With normal use, they will last a long time.
Question: Is it like a wrinkle release agent, good for steaming clothes
Answer: They are made of wool.
Question: How many ounces
Answer: I do not think so since they pressurize when you click the pen open. They are much shorter than other refills however they do last a while.,
Question: What are the ingredients in Best Press? Surprisingly, they are not listed on the bottle. Many thanks in advance for your help
Answer: Hey, Blanton! Great question. Yes, if you have very coarse hair this pre-shave oil is going to be perfect for you. Our pre-shave oil was formulated so that whether you have the most sensitive skin or the coarsest of beards, you'll be able to enjoy a smooth, pain-free shave every time. As far as using our oil with an electric razor, our recommendation would be to use very little to start and gradually add more as needed. Give it a try, if you don't like it you're already protected by our 100% money-back guarantee. Hope this helps! Thanks for reaching out and enjoy your day. -Devin
