14 best carbon monoxide detector do

A carbon monoxide (CO) detector is a crucial safety device designed to monitor and detect the presence of carbon monoxide gas in the air. Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless, and tasteless gas that is produced by incomplete combustion of carbon-containing fuels, such as natural gas, propane, gasoline, wood, and charcoal. When inhaled, carbon monoxide can be extremely harmful and even fatal, making a CO detector an essential household device. Here's what you need to know about how carbon monoxide detectors work:

  1. Gas Sensing Technology: CO detectors utilize various sensing technologies to detect carbon monoxide gas. The most common types include electrochemical sensors, metal oxide semiconductor sensors, and biomimetic sensors. Electrochemical sensors are widely used for their accuracy and reliability.

  2. Continuous Monitoring: Carbon monoxide detectors continuously monitor the air for the presence of CO gas. They are designed to provide early warning if dangerous levels of carbon monoxide are detected in your home.

  3. Alarm System: When the detector senses elevated levels of carbon monoxide, it triggers an audible alarm, usually a loud beeping sound. This alert is designed to wake you up or notify you when you are awake, ensuring you can take immediate action.

  4. Digital Display: Many modern CO detectors feature digital displays that show the current carbon monoxide levels in parts per million (ppm). This display can help you assess the severity of the situation.

  5. Power Source: CO detectors are typically powered by household batteries (usually AA or AAA) or by being directly connected to the electrical system of your home. Some models offer both battery backup and electrical connectivity to ensure continuous operation even during power outages.

  6. Placement: It's essential to install CO detectors in strategic locations throughout your home, including near bedrooms and common living spaces. Follow the manufacturer's guidelines for proper placement to ensure optimal coverage.

  7. Maintenance: Regular maintenance is important. Test your carbon monoxide detector monthly to ensure it is functioning correctly. Change the batteries as needed, and replace the entire unit as recommended by the manufacturer, usually every 5-7 years.

  8. Interconnected Detectors: In larger homes or homes with multiple levels, interconnected CO detectors are recommended. When one detector detects carbon monoxide, all interconnected units will sound their alarms, providing better coverage and early warning.

  9. Compliance: It's important to check if your CO detector complies with relevant safety standards and regulations in your region. Look for certifications like UL (Underwriters Laboratories) or CSA (Canadian Standards Association).

  10. Emergency Response: If your CO detector goes off, evacuate your home immediately and call emergency services (911) from a safe location. Do not re-enter the building until it has been cleared by professionals.

In summary, carbon monoxide detectors are vital devices for protecting you and your family from the potentially deadly effects of carbon monoxide poisoning. They provide early warning, allowing you to take action and address any potential sources of carbon monoxide in your home, such as malfunctioning heating systems or gas appliances.

Product description

Nest Protect is the smoke alarm that thinks, speaks, and alerts your phone. This smoke detector and carbon monoxide detector has a Split-Spectrum Sensor to detect fast-burning and smoldering fires, tests its own batteries, and lasts up to 10 years. It sends phone alerts when something’s wrong.[1] You can hush the alarm from your phone with App Silence. And it tells you when the batteries are running low, so there are no chirps at 2 AM.

[1] Mobile alerts require working internet and Wi-Fi.

  • Designed in USA
  • Smoke detector and carbon monoxide detector that speaks up in a friendly voice to give you an early warning when there’s smoke or CO in your home
  • Split Spectrum Sensor looks for both fast burning and smoldering fires and tells you where the danger is
  • Get phone alerts so you know something’s wrong even when you’re away from home[1]
  • CO detector looks out for carbon monoxide and tells you where it’s located
  • With App Silence, you can silence the smoke alarm with your phone in the Nest app when there’s only a little smoke
  • No chirps to tell you the battery is low; Nest Protect tests its own batteries and gives you a Nightly Promise when you turn off the lights so you know everything is working

User questions & answers

Question: Will these wired ones install on old electrical wired systems? The thermostat needed an additional wire installed. Will these, too
Answer: Yes all the wired Nest Protect needs is the 120V hot (black) and neutral (white) wires in the electrical box connected to the plug-in pigtail that comes with the Protect. If your house has multiple detectors now you will usually also find a red wire in the electrical box that interconnects your old detectors so that if one goes off they all sound. That wire is no longer needed with the Protect so you just cap it with a wire nut.
Question: Can you view carbon monoxide levels in PPM
Answer: Yes, but only if you are connected to the internet and then only for the last ten days, and only if the level rises above the heads up level (which is 70ppm and rising for around an hour or a shorter period if over 150ppm). To counter what someone else's answer was - Carbon monoxide does NOT sink. It is in fact lighter than air (CO has an atomic weight of 28 versus Nitrogen (N2) which is also 28 - but marginally heavier (by 0.003 amu due to heavier isotopes), Oxygen (O2) which is 32 and Argon which is 40. However the weight is similar enough in the air in your house that it tends to distribute as a fluid and is measurable anywhere in a room; it really depends upon how air moves through the space. The levels tend to fluctuate rapidly as CO distributes and any outside air mixes in and additional CO is added. Overall, there is no perfect way to measure the CO levels with one device in one place, but this is as good as most people need.
Question: What happens if the wifi disconnects? Does the alarm sound
Answer: The Nest Protects and Nest Learning Thermostat create their own ad-hoc network and don't rely on your home wifi for communications between devices. WiFi is only used for communications OUTSIDE of the home to pass on alerts, etc. Even if the ad-hoc network fails the individual alarms will sound as they detect smoke/CO.
Question: My home has hard-wired interconnected smoke detectors. can i simply replace one with this device? i read that it doesn't use interconnect wire
Answer: I think very few here understand the question. National code requires interconnected smoke detectors as of 2004, there is an extra wire in the circuit and all smoke detectors are on that wire for 'signal'. When one alarms they should ALL alarm. If I am reading the answers correctly, NEST does not comply with the signal wire. However, it looks like it does set up its own wireless network to act like they are all interconnected. To be honest, after paying for the extra wire behind the wall, why would I want to by 6-8 nests at $100 each when the originals are 20-30 each? This way there is one smart point to notify if any detector is going off. Nests way 6-9 smoke detectors, 6-8 login, 6-8 ip address. Ugh, what a nightmare!

User questions & answers

Question: can i fly with this for overseas use
Answer: No. This does not sync with those.
Question: These CO2 detectors have a shelf life, how do we get these with the full life of the unit? Some are already past the exp. date
Answer: Yes. Batteries are included.
Question: Will this give your exact co level even if it's normal or only if the co is dangerous
Answer: This PL-259 Jumper Cable is usually used for HAM & CB Radio, Antenna Analyzer, Dummy Load, SWR Meter. If it is used for WIFI modem, you need to check if your device has SO239 connector.
Question: is this good for travel
Answer: Loss in a co-ax is a function of frequency. Assuming we are talking about the 12” patches. At 1ft of RG58 run 14MHz(20m band) it has a 0.013dB loss, at 440MHz (70cm band) it has 0.08dB loss... which yeah if you add everything up it could be rather substantial. As a patch cable though. If you want to try patching with a LMR400UF, that’s all on you, but you can’t beat the flexibility of RG58 If you’re going to attempt to run say 100ft of RG58 on 70cm yeah... 90% of your power goes to de-icing the feed line. It all depends on your application :D 73 de KN4GEI

User questions & answers

Question: when were these manufactured ? how old are these ? where can you find the date of manufacture on this item
Answer: If you go to the kidde.com website and find support for this model, select the "Documents" tab and both the information sheet and manual are available for download.
Question: Where can i pull up a copy of the owner`s manual for kiddie model kn-coeg
Answer: The manufacturer's technical specifications for this unit indicate that the unit is designed to detect natural gas and propane, which are the two most common type of gas used in heating and cooking in residential settings. Hydrogen gas is not a part of the specification.
Question: Will it detect hydrogen gas (as in a battery bank charging
Answer: Virtually all explosive gas monitors employ a heating element as part of their design. Because of this, such devices must be plugged into a household outlet. If they are unplugged or there is a power outage, the battery will typically allow the unit to run for up to a day or two (depending on the make and model), but then the battery will die. So the answer is no. This unit in particular will only last about one day on battery power, at which point the unit will stop working and the battery will have to be replaced. In addition, many devices, including this one, must have a good battery installed for backup or they will not operate. Hope this helps.
Question: can they be run on battery only??? and not plugged in
Answer: For a light rod the line is 2-6 pound test. For the medium rod it is 8-20 pound test line.

First Alert PRC710 Combination Alarm, 1 pack

First Alert

Based on 2 reviews Check latest price

Product description

Featuring a low profile, contemporary design, the First Alert PRC710 Slim Photoelectric Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarm with 10 Year Battery provides the same protection as a standard smoke alarm while taking up only a fraction of the space. This slim, battery operated smoke detector requires no hardwiring for installation, making it an ideal solution for those who want to enhance fire safety without hiring an electrician. It features a built in 10 year lithium ion battery that provides continuous power for up to a decade. Equipped with an ultra reliable photoelectric sensor, the smoke alarm detects smoke from slow burning, smoldering fires while keeping false alarms to a minimum. A patented smoke entry system further enhances the detector's reliability by providing a direct path to the smoke sensor. The unit also features an advanced electrochemical sensor that detects carbon monoxide leaks from multiple sources such as faulty fuel burning appliances and blocked chimneys. The simple twist lock mounting system installs easily onto a wall or ceiling, while the tamper resistant locks help prevent removal of the battery to keep the alarm secure. Half as thick as a standard alarm, the smoke detector has a sleek, slim design that blends in seamlessly with most decor. A loud 85 decibel alarm sounds when smoke is detected, and a convenient test/silence button lets you easily check alarm function and mute false alarms. TROUBLESHOOTING STEPS: Activating the battery. Mount alarm to mounting bracket to activate. Once unit is activated, it cannot be turned off. NOTE: After you activate the battery, the power indicator light may flash. (If the unit alarms, the light will blink rapidly, and the horn will repeatedly sound 3 beeps, pause, 3 beeps.) Once the Smoke Alarm is on the bracket, you can rotate the Alarm to adjust the alignment. Clean the Smoke/CO Alarm at least once a month; gently vacuum the outside of the Smoke/CO Alarm using your household vacuum’s soft brush attachment. A can of clean compressed air may also be used. Follow manufacturer instructions for use. Test the Smoke/CO Alarm. Never use water, cleaners or solvents since they may damage the unit. If the Smoke/CO Alarm becomes contaminated by excessive dirt, dust and/or grime, and cannot be cleaned to avoid unwanted alarms, replace the unit immediately. DO NOT LOCATE THIS SMOKE/CO ALARM: In garages, furnace rooms, crawl spaces and unfinished attics. Avoid extremely dusty, dirty or greasy areas. Where combustion particles are produced. Combustion particles form when something burns. Areas to avoid include poorly ventilated kitchens, garages, and furnace rooms. Keep units at least 20 feet (6 meters) from the sources of combustion particles (stove, furnace, water heater, space heater) if possible. In areas where a 20-foot (6 meter) distance is not possible – in modular, mobile, or smaller homes, for example – it is recommended the Smoke Alarm be placed as fa from these fuel-burning sources as possible. The placement recommendations are intended to keep these Alarms at a reasonable distance from a fuel-burning source, and thus reduce “unwanted” alarms. Unwanted alarms can occur if a Smoke Alarm is placed directly next to a fuel-burning source. Ventilate these areas as much as possible. Within 5 feet (1.5 meters) of any cooking appliance. In air streams near kitchens. Air currents can draw cooking smoke into the smoke sensor and cause unwanted alarms. In extremely humid areas. This Alarm should be at least 10 feet (3 meters) from a shower, sauna, humidifier, vaporizer, dishwasher, laundry room, utility room, or other source of high humidity. In direct sunlight. In turbulent air, like near ceiling fans or open windows. Blowing air may prevent CO or smoke from reaching the sensors. In areas where temperature is colder than 40˚ F (4.4˚ C) or hotter than 100˚F (37.8˚ C). These areas include non-airconditioned crawl spaces, unfinished attics, uninsulated or poorly insulated ceilings, porches, and garages. In insect infested areas. Insects can clog the openings to the sensing chamber. Less than 12 inches (305 mm) away from fluorescent lights. Electrical “noise” can interfere with the sensor. In “dead air” spaces. See “Avoiding Dead Air Spaces”.

User questions & answers

Question: This gets such terrible reviews...What are better choices for a 10-year smoke/carbon detector
Answer: I have no idea if any of the brands available are any better than this.
Question: how to silence
Answer: There is a reset/silence button on the front cover of the detector. Push it and it should reset. If not you battery is no good and you need anew detector!
Question: Do you ceiling mount this fore/co2 alarm? doesn't co2 settle to the ground first
Answer: This is a CO alarm, not a CO2 alarm. CO2 is what makes your soda fizzy and is in in chained cylinders at restaurants... CO is an odorless, tasteless, colorless gas. The ONLY way to detect it is by detector. It is generated by any gas-powered appliances like dryers, stoves, snowblowers, cars, etc, and by burning like fire places. CO is BARELY lighter than air (about .96 to air being 1 for vapor density), and will mix and collect like normal air does, with drafts and normal air movement. CO detectors can be mounted at just about any height, though many manufacturers (somewhat arbitrarily) picked 5ft or chest height as the ideal mounting height. Smoke and heat rise, so smoke/heat detectors are required to be mounted within 12" of the ceiling. Combination detectors are common, and need to be mounted within 12" of the ceiling for the smoke function to operate properly.
Question: Does it use the same ceiling mounts as previous first alert detectors
Answer: The ceiling mount is different, but the screws are in the same place. Just loosen the screws, swith mounts, and tighten back up.

User questions & answers

Question: When I unplug this device the green light goes off even though the batteries are installed as a backup. Is that normal
Answer: It's about 5 1/2 in from hinge to hinge ~ 14.5 cm. It does provide full cover. The foam is flush with my face without being uncomfortable. It however is not waterproof. The foam has air slots so it can breathe. I've used these for Chemistry lab as well as wood working, and they work great.
Question: When I try put battery in or plug it in, the alarm goes off! Does that alarm sound stop? It's brand new
Answer: They stay on surprisingly well! I use them for my dog grooming business. They are light weight so that works good for me. They might be a bit too light for sports. If you got hit with a ball they would probably crack and potentially cut you.
Question: How do you turn on the "low battery hush
Answer: Yes, it should do a good job to keep out drywall dust. However, I ended up removing it due to condensation buildup while using it
Question: What is the location of the wall plug on the device? Will it cover the entire outlet
Answer: yes they can fit over Rx glasses but I don't recommend because they became blurring and you will not see very well
