9 best sinus allergy medicine
Sinus allergy medicine, also known as sinus allergy relief medication, is a type of over-the-counter (OTC) or prescription medication used to alleviate symptoms associated with sinus allergies. These medications are designed to provide relief from various allergic reactions that can affect the sinuses, such as hay fever (allergic rhinitis) or other environmental allergens. Here are some key points about sinus allergy medicine:
Types of Medications:
- Antihistamines: These drugs block the action of histamines, which are chemicals released by the body during an allergic reaction. Common OTC antihistamines include cetirizine (Zyrtec), loratadine (Claritin), and fexofenadine (Allegra).
- Decongestants: Decongestants like pseudoephedrine can help relieve nasal congestion associated with sinus allergies.
- Nasal Steroids: Intranasal corticosteroid sprays, such as fluticasone (Flonase) or mometasone (Nasonex), can reduce inflammation in the nasal passages.
- Combination Medications: Some products combine antihistamines and decongestants for comprehensive relief.
Symptom Relief:
- Sinus allergy medicines are primarily used to alleviate symptoms such as sneezing, runny or stuffy nose, itchy or watery eyes, and sinus pressure.
- They can also help reduce inflammation in the nasal passages and sinuses, providing relief from sinus congestion and discomfort.
Duration of Use:
- OTC sinus allergy medicines are generally safe for short-term use to relieve acute symptoms. However, long-term or frequent use of some medications, such as decongestant nasal sprays, should be avoided without medical supervision.
Prescription Medications:
- In cases of severe or chronic sinus allergies, a healthcare provider may prescribe stronger medications, including nasal corticosteroids, leukotriene inhibitors, or even allergy shots (immunotherapy) for long-term management.
Side Effects:
- Common side effects of sinus allergy medicines may include drowsiness (with some antihistamines), dry mouth, headache, and increased heart rate (with decongestants).
- It's important to read the medication labels and follow dosing instructions carefully to minimize side effects.
Precautions:
- Consult a healthcare professional before using sinus allergy medicine, especially if you have underlying health conditions, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or are taking other medications.
- Some allergy medications can interact with certain drugs, so it's essential to disclose all medications you are taking to your healthcare provider.
Non-Medical Allergy Management:
- In addition to medication, allergen avoidance measures can help reduce allergy symptoms. These may include keeping windows closed during high pollen seasons, using air purifiers, and regularly cleaning your home to minimize allergen exposure.
Remember that while sinus allergy medicines can provide relief from allergy symptoms, they may not cure allergies themselves. Allergy management often involves a combination of medication, lifestyle adjustments, and, in some cases, allergen-specific immunotherapy under the guidance of a healthcare provider. Always consult with a healthcare professional before starting any new medication or treatment regimen.

Symptoms Aren’t the Only Problem
When symptoms from seasonal allergies, allergic rhinitis or hay fever ruin your sleep, they make their presence felt even more the next day in the form of fatigue and daytime sleepiness.

User questions & answers
Question: | Isn't homeopathy the belief that the more something is diluted the more it is effective? This product seems like a herbal 'medicine', not homeopathy |
Answer: | That is the basic principle of homeopathy, yes. This is homeopathy, NOT herbal "medicine". Just because something is multi ingredient doesn't mean it is not dilute. There are no herbs in this formula and that is why it is not herbal "medicine". Herbal medicine is for example, echinacea, which uses dried pulverized parts of that plant as therapy. Hopefully, that clears it up for you. If you want to learn something about homeopathy, check out Boiron's website, they have a PDF that has a lot of good information for someone learning about homeopathy remedies. |
Question: | Are these vegan friendly |
Answer: | The Manufacturers say is contains Lactose from cows milk on a past post. |
Question: | Anyone use this for flutters in the ear |
Answer: | Didn’t purposely but now that you say it definitely does work for this. So yes I would say this helps those fluttering feeling in my ears. Felt I had extra cerumen or fluid with allergies this helps dry that up. |
Question: | How much sodium does this contain - need to know - Thank you |
Answer: | This does not contain sodium. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Currently give dogs (2) 5mg which are very tiny. Is the 10mg much bigger in size? I have to put them in pill pockets to disguise |
Answer: | Depending on size of dog, purchase Pill Popper's for stuffing pills in stick 2) 5 mg or 1) 10mg. I can get a 10 mg in and with s bit of kneading action get pill coveted and disguised. Of course my dogs go Gulp All Gone so if you have an unwrapper and a wise one you might not be able to fool them. Then it's time to use something irresistible like turkey Burger. If it tongues that apart then it's the old stuff down the throat and hold while blowing in face or pulverizing the pill, putbit in honey water and syringe it in. |
Question: | Is this the same as zertec |
Answer: | Absolutely. It works great and you only have to buy it once a year. I love this. I’m ordering my second bottle today. |
Question: | From the date of purchase, will the expiration date be longer than 365 days |
Answer: | Yes, 7/16 is the expiration date on the order I received in December. If I didn't take it daily, I might have chosen the 90 tablet size. |
Question: | Is this a knock off zyrtec? Or wholly a different product |
Answer: | By US law, all brand name medications are required to release a generic version of the drug that is "open source" after a certain amount of time. This means anyone can make that same drug. This IS Zyrtec. It's the exact same drug. The only differences will be in the inactive ingredients of the pill, and even then they will be purely cosmetic stuff. Anything required for the drug to work is copied exactly. If you buy brand name products you're paying heaps extra for a brand name and a easier to swallow coating. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this a temporary reliever or will this fix sinus and congestions issues? Thanks |
Answer: | This is temporary relief. Use 2 or 3 sprays in each nostril. Not more often than every 10 to 12 hours. Do not exceed 2 doses in 24 hours. The Vicks Team |
Question: | Mine 2 pack came today in sealed boxes but no plastic safety seal on caps/bottles - is this normal |
Answer: | I think I had the same question last year about no inner bottle plastic seal, bc I distinctly recall performing a rather dangerous ballet trying to get a shrink wrap thing off the Vicks brand, the one with the pump type sprayer (rather than the old school squeeze-to-spray). I was desperately stuffed up, late at night, so said a little prayer n used it anyway, no harmful effects. Most boxes containing personal products, state *on the box* how its packaged inside. Usually, "Carton glued shut for your protection; inner bottle shrink wrapped with [Brand Name] logo plastic. Do not use product if any protective wrap missing." I have not seen that language on this product packaging. There Oughta Be A Law! Every OTC drugstore product should describe protective packaging ON THE CARTON. Because you KNOW store clerks restocking returns are saying, "Its still good...!" And back on the shelf it goes! Really ALL drugstore returns should go back to the vendor to determine if it can be sold again. |
Question: | What is the difference between this and Flonase |
Answer: | If you try Flnase, make sure someone is there with you at the time. I've used Afrin for years (same ingredient at Sinex), and tried Flonase which works great for my grandchildren. It immediately caused my nasal passages to swell completely shut and I began having trouble breathing even through my mouth. Took me about 8 times of spraying with Afrin before it cleared up. Afrin is "addicting" in that studies show it causes a rebound effect that may make the sinus mucosa swell more. However, if you hear that it causes increase in blood pressure, studies have shown that it does not. (I don't know about Flonase for either of these possible effects, though.) |
Question: | Hi si this much diff than their product vicks sinex moisturizing nasal and sinus spray, ultra fine mist, 0.5 fl oz |
Answer: | Honestly, I've used both and prefer this one. I think it's a bit stronger. I've been suffering with sinus congestion for 20 years, this is the only nasal spray that gives relief when I'm really congested. I had sinus surgery a couple of years ago and I truly thought it would fix it, it worked for a year or so, but it didn't last beyond that, so it's time to buy stock in Sinex. |
