7 best poison ivy remedies

Poison ivy remedies are essential for treating the itchy rash caused by contact with poison ivy plants. Here are some tips for treating poison ivy rashes and related categories like itching rash treatments, first aid, health care, and health household:

  1. Wash the Affected Area: The first step after coming into contact with poison ivy is to wash the affected area thoroughly with soap and water. This can help remove the plant's oils and reduce the risk of further spreading the rash.

  2. Cold Compress: Apply a cold, wet compress to the rash to help alleviate itching and reduce inflammation. Avoid using hot water as it can worsen itching.

  3. Over-the-Counter (OTC) Topical Treatments: Many OTC creams and lotions are available for treating poison ivy rashes. Look for products containing ingredients like hydrocortisone, calamine lotion, or colloidal oatmeal, which can provide relief from itching and inflammation.

  4. Antihistamines: Oral antihistamines such as diphenhydramine (Benadryl) can help reduce itching and swelling. Follow the recommended dosage instructions and be aware of potential drowsiness as a side effect.

  5. Avoid Scratching: While it's tempting to scratch the rash, doing so can worsen the symptoms and increase the risk of infection.Keep nails trimmed and consider wearing gloves to prevent scratching.

  6. Keep the Area Clean: Keeping the affected area clean and dry can help prevent infection. Gently cleanse the area with mild soap and water and pat it dry.

  7. Prescription Medication: In severe cases, a healthcare provider may prescribe stronger topical or oral medications to alleviate symptoms and reduce inflammation.

  8. Oatmeal Baths: Soaking in a cool bath with colloidal oatmeal can provide relief from itching and soothe the skin. You can find OTC oatmeal bath products or make your own by adding finely ground oats to a bath.

  9. Home Remedies: Some people find relief from natural remedies such as aloe vera gel, apple cider vinegar, or baking soda paste applied to the rash. These remedies may help soothe itching but are not a substitute for medical treatment.

  10. Wash Contaminated Items: Any clothing, gardening tools, or other items that may have come into contact with poison ivy should be thoroughly washed to prevent re-exposure.

  11. Seek Medical Attention: If the rash is severe, covers a large area, or becomes infected (signs of infection include pus, increased pain, and fever), consult a healthcare provider for appropriate treatment.

  12. Preventive Measures: Learn to identify poison ivy plants and take precautions when outdoors, such as wearing long sleeves, pants, and gloves, and using barrier creams.

Remember that individual reactions to poison ivy can vary, and it's crucial to monitor the rash's progression and seek medical advice if it doesn't improve or worsens despite home treatments. Prompt and appropriate care can help alleviate discomfort and promote healing.

Tec Labs

Based on 5 reviews Check latest price

Product description

Don’t let poison oak or ivy ruin your outdoor plans! Tecnu Extreme Poison Ivy and Oak Scrub is the first step in your poison oak or ivy treatment regimen. Use before or after the rash has appeared. Our special skin cleanser works by washing away urushiol, the toxic resin found in poisonous plants, allowing the skin to begin its natural healing process. Tecnu Extreme is an excellent first choice before a cortisone or hydrocortisone treatment. If the rash has already begun, we recommend using Tecnu Extreme as an all-over body application. Apply product to wet skin. Then gently scrub the affected areas to remove the rash-causing poison ivy oil from your skin. Complete your treatment regimen by following up with an anti-itch and pain relieving gel or spray. Be proactive next time. Tecnu Extreme can also be used before a rash begins. After coming in contact with poisonous plants, apply Tecnu Extreme to exposed areas of skin. If you’re hypersensitive, do an all- over application, since the rash-causing oils are invisible and can spread to other parts of the body. Tecnu products are designed for those who love the outdoors, adventure and exploring. Our product collection includes the Tecnu Original Outdoor Cleanser, Tecnu Extreme Poison Ivy and Oak Scrub, Tecnu Rash Relief Spray and Calagel Anti-Itch Gel. Tecnu products allow you to wander confidently, knowing you have powerful protection and fast-acting itch relief at your fingertips. Tecnu Extreme does not contain plastic microbeads. The exfoliating ingredient in Tecnu Extreme is silicon dioxide (SiO2), also known as silica. It is a natural compound made of two of the earth’s most abundant materials: silicon (Si) and oxygen (O2). Silicon dioxide is most often recognized in the form of quartz, and It’s found naturally in water, plants, animals, and the earth.

User questions & answers

Question: This is advertised as a two pack. Are there really two that come
Answer: The picture is of a 2 pack but the fine print says 1. I notified the company that I only got 1. They said I only bought one. I reported it to amazon as misleading and false advertising and thought they should fix it. After arguing with them, they finally gave me a credit for the 2nd one, but obviously didn't correct the listing.
Question: Does this product contain Jewelweed? That is what I'm looking for but I can't seem to find a stand-alone on Amazon
Answer: No. It does not. It is homeopathy so it contains poison Ivy and alcohol.
Question: In the 1960s there was a product that really worked. it was ivy-tox. is this similar
Answer: Same experience here....first serious exposure to poison oak was in 1954, and was from contractors burning a huge pile of brush cleared to build our home and several hundred more in a large housing development in CA. Covered head to toe (even inside my mouth) with poison oak, and absolutely miserable! Doctor recommended a product called "Poison Knock" to be taken BEFORE the "season" for poison oak exposure the next year to build up immunity to poison oak outbreaks. Started with 1 drop in a glass of water for a few days sometime in February, then 2 drops, then 3, and so-on up to 10 drops per day for a week or so, and repeated yearly for several years. Never had anything worse than a tiny poison oak "bump" or two behind my knee or in the crook of an elbow after that. I suspect this product may be essentially the same "active ingredient".
Question: what is in it. and how does it work
Answer: Well, it is 70% alcohol and the rest is Rhus toxicodendron, Poison Ivy extract! If you know that you will be working or playing in an area with poison ivy, you take 3-5 drops in a small glass of water every day through the growing season. If exposed and you break out, you take 10 drops in 2 oz. water every 2 hours, then every 4 hours as symptoms lessen, then twice a day until symptoms disappear. The hardest part is taking it the FIRST time, knowing that you are drinking poison ivy. A 1 oz. bottle lasts me through a year normally. I DO get exposed and I have had a few spots break out, but they are minor compared to what I used to experience, the symptoms clear up faster, and the itching is much milder. For ME, it works!

Getting Started

My hope in writing this book is that you will learn how to partner with herbs to develop your own herbal apothecary. Maybe you’ll create a first aid kit with all kinds of helpful remedies, such as tinctures, poultices, and bug sprays. Or perhaps you’ll dive deeper into infusions, oils, and salves, learning both what nourishes you and what herbs you enjoy the most. Some of you may take your newfound favorites to the garden, planting and tending so you can restock your apothecary. No matter what calls to you, you will feel empowered to support your health and the health of others.

The Mints and Herbal Tea

I Often welcome people to my home with a cup of mint tea or, in the summer months, a mint cooler. I encourage you to start this chapter with a cup of mint tea in hand-and maybe even plant some mint in that pot on the porch. For those new to herbs, mints are a great place to start. The mints have many fans, as they’re easy to grow. Watch them, though-they spread! Mints are also mild, so they are generally safe for just about everyone, including kids. (Those with a mint allergy aside, of course.) If you’re more familiar with herbs, the mints can be a nice reminder to simplify.

Immunity and Remedies

Immunity can be a tough concept to grasp. It’s safe to say nobody has it completely figured out, even the best scientists. Herbalism is also difficult to comprehend fully, as it’s a holistic science-meaning it’s about the whole being more than any individual part, or even the sum of the parts. Perhaps this is why it’s so tough for an herbalist when someone tells us they have a cough and asks what to take. In herbalism, we look at the whole person, the whole picture: what is going on in each part of the body, and outside the body as well.

Bug Repellents and Skin Soothers

Skin is our largest and most sensitive organ; it’s what we face the world with every day. Skin is both your armor and the cause of much frustration. A tiny itch can monopolize your thoughts, distract you from your work, cause hot spots on your animals, and keep you up at night. Thankfully, there are herbs to help. Some are common 'weeds' that surround us in the lawn and on the farm, while others are easily cultivated. And because herbs are multifaceted, they can be supportive in cases of strains, sprains, burns, bruises, and more.

Allergies and Pain

Allergies and pain are frustrating ailments most of us deal with at some point. Unfortunately, either can also be a chronic condition. While at first it may seem like the only thing allergies and pain have in common is the misery they bring, there is another important link. In fact, they are grouped together in this chapter because they are both caused by inflammation. In this chapter, you’ll find insider secrets on the deeper causes of allergies and pain and natural strategies to avoid them.

Eating Herbal through the Seasons

Hippocrates once said, “If we could give every individual the right amount of nourishment and exercise, not too little and not too much, we would have found the safest way to health.” Now, how do we go about the nourishment? In the most delicious way possible, of course! If you look back through history at the diets of people around the globe, they naturally ate what was growing around them during each season. Coincidentally or not, those foods were often perfectly suited to relieve symptoms experienced during those times of the year. My favorite example is bitter greens.

Sun Tea

This is the most energy-efficient way to make tea, but it’s slower than a hot infusion or decoction. Just about any leaf or flower will work for this, but the best herbs for making sun tea are those that extract easily-especially those high in tannins. Mints are great for sun tea! Note that the harder parts of herbs, such as twigs, bark, and dried berries, will likely not extract well with the sun tea method.
