Joseph (Joe) DeFrates, Illinois’ only world champion of chili, is the creator of canned Chilli Man Chili.

He got his start in chili after learning alongside his father and uncle. Wanting to get into the business himself, he took two years to develop his own recipe and business before putting Chilli Man Chili on the market in 1953.

AWARD WINNING CHILI RECIPE

Mr. DeFrates won the International Chili Championship in 1973. He claimed the World’s Championship Chili Cookoff in 1975 and promptly retired from competition. In 1975, Mr. DeFrates started the Illinois State Championship Chilli Cookoff in Springfield, running the competition until 1987.

Answer:	The label says 380 calories for 1 cup serving the whole can is 14 oz so it will be about 665 for the entire can.

Answer:	The orange goop is “normal” , just like when you put homemade chili in fridge, it’s natural. It’s from the fat from the meat and tomatoes . Any tomato base dish does the same thing unless you 100% drain all the fat out of the sauce.

Answer:	I don't find chunks of chili pepper. I am like you; the chili powder is what I prefer. It is a thick chili; which I like to expand with chicken broth, tomatoes, sauteed onions, and canned beans. Anyone could add pepper in the same way; I don't add it though. I can get a quick chili taste that seems like home cooked with this short cut expanded version that I throw together..

Question:	Does everybody else receive the product damaged? I've tried to order this a couple times and every single can arrives damaged, even the middle ones
Answer:	I've ordered this product several times from Amazon and never had the problem you described. Occasionally one or two of the cans, in a case, might have a very small dent but never enough to cause safety concerns or to damage the product inside. I do know that Amy's has recently changed cans and tops and the newer cans do seem a bit more soft and fragile. If Amazon can't help you, try going directly to Amy's website. I have found customer support there to be very friendly and helpful. It's a great product and I'm sure they would want to know if there is a problem in shipping those newer style cans. Good luck.
