13 best miso soups

Miso soup is a traditional Japanese soup made from a flavorful broth and fermented soybean paste called miso. It is a staple in Japanese cuisine and is enjoyed both in Japan and around the world. Here's what you need to know about miso soup:

  1. Ingredients: The basic ingredients for miso soup include dashi (a broth made from ingredients like bonito flakes and kombu seaweed), miso paste (fermented soybean paste), and additional ingredients such as tofu, seaweed (typically wakame), green onions, and sometimes vegetables or mushrooms.

  2. Dashi: Dashi is the foundation of miso soup and provides its umami flavor. It can be made from scratch by simmering dried bonito flakes and kombu seaweed, or it can be prepared using instant dashi granules or stock.

  3. Miso Paste: Miso paste is the key ingredient that gives the soup its name. There are different types of miso paste, with the most common varieties being white (shiro), yellow (shinshu), and red (aka). The type of miso used can influence the flavor of the soup.

  4. Variations: Miso soup comes in numerous variations, with ingredients added to suit different preferences and seasonal availability. Popular additions include tofu, sliced seaweed, green onions, mushrooms, and root vegetables like daikon radish.

  5. Preparation: To make miso soup, you typically start by heating the dashi to a simmer, then adding the miso paste. It's important not to boil the miso, as high heat can destroy its flavor. After the miso is dissolved, you can add in your chosen ingredients and simmer until they are cooked through.

  6. Flavor Profiles: Miso soup has a savory, umami-rich flavor with a slightly salty and earthy taste. The exact flavor can vary depending on the type of miso used and the additional ingredients.

  7. Serving: Miso soup is usually served as a starter or side dish in Japanese meals. It's commonly served in small bowls and can be garnished with chopped green onions or sometimes sesame seeds.

  8. Health Benefits: Miso soup is considered a nutritious option. It is a good source of protein, vitamins, and minerals. Additionally, miso contains probiotics that can promote gut health.

  9. Cultural Significance: Miso soup is deeply ingrained in Japanese culture and is often consumed daily. It's a symbol of comfort and tradition in Japanese cuisine.

In summary, miso soup is a flavorful and nutritious Japanese soup made from miso paste and dashi broth, often featuring various additions like tofu and seaweed. It's a versatile and beloved dish in Japanese cuisine that has gained popularity worldwide for its unique and savory taste.

User questions & answers

Question: where is this made
Answer: The package says, "Product of Japan."
Question: Are these vegetarian
Answer: They list bonito (dry fish flakes) as an ingredient, so I'd say no, not vegetarian. Most miso soups use bonito.
Question: watt is the difference between the red and blue color on the packaging
Answer: No, Watt is not the difference. Watt is the SI unit of power, equivalent to one joule per second, corresponding to the power in an electric circuit in which the potential difference is one volt and the current one ampere.

User questions & answers

Question: are they idividual packets or cubes
Answer: There are 2 packets you combine for one bowl of soup - one you squeeze out the miso paste and then another with the dried ingredients (seaweed, tofu, fried tofu, or green onion).
Question: How many carbs per serving
Answer: I went into Google Translator; "carbohydrates" is "Tansuikabutsu". Japanese is read from right to left, so the first three symbols (parts of letters) remind me of: a brush, a telephone pole and a backwards letter "J". Looking for those images on the label, I find it in a different font, but still recognizable as the word 'carbs' in Japanese. It is the third listing from the bottom in the nutritional box (has yellow below it; the other is obviously a list of ingredients). Checking quickly, the label shows us that all the entrees contain either 4.7, 4.8, or 5 grams of carbs per 18 grams of food.
Question: What flavors are identified by the color of the package (green, blue, orange, red) since I don't read Japanese
Answer: Despite what the flavor packets say, please note there is green onion, tofu on some sort, seaweed and dashi in all flavor packets. There is no avoiding any ingredient. I’ll post pictures as I open them up.
Question: Does this soup contain MSG
Answer: People keep answering "no" to that very question, but allow me to clarify: it does not contain ADDED msg. The broth of any miso soup contains kombu, a type of seaweed. If you take a look at a piece of dried kombu you'll notice a white crystalline substance on the surface. This is naturally-occurring msg. Any food with a flavor that could be described as 'umami' (soy sauce, miso, etc) contains naturally-occurring glutamates. That is the source of umami flavor. Hope that helps.

User questions & answers

Question: how much water to each individual pack
Answer: The soup is very flavorful but for one serving only. I use my coffee maker to dispense one cup of hot water and that seems about right.
Question: Does this contain MSG
Answer: Both the soup base and the garnish packet contain MSG. See ingredient list on one of the pictures Amazon posted.
Question: How many do you get when you buy this? Is it just one? The atp said something about a 8 pack
Answer: Each base package contains 16 packets...........8 of the flavor paste and 8 freeze dried vegetables/seasoning. You add 1 flavor and 1 vegetable packet to 2/3 cup of HOT WATER and let sit for a minute or so.
Question: Is this for one pack (8 servings) or more than one pack. The package says 1.4 oz but your title says
Answer: 2/2020 .. Hi. There are eight packets in this bag. One packet makes one cup serving. I beef up the cup with diced silken tofu (1 or 2 oz) and small amount of Jasmine rice. And top this off w/ wonton strips. Really Yummy 😋

  • Each package contains three instant packets; also available in other flavors
  • 3 bags (9 pokets) 3x Net Wt. 1.05 Oz.

User questions & answers

Question: The description says :Soup mix also contains seaweed, green onions and wheat pieces - wheat pieces? Did they mean tofu pieces
Answer: I do not have your specific miso soup. I use the tofu miso one. On this package there is no reference to wheat.
Question: Why did I only get 1 bag, 3 pockets
Answer: This happened the first time I ordered. Look specifically for the multi-package box.
Question: I waa told that this is gluten free. True
Answer: I haven’t studied the label to know if it says that. But miso soup is typically gluten-free. Miso is soy—which is GF. Some makers of “soy sauce” do also include wheat in their brewing. If they do, then their product can’t be labeled gluten-free. If this miso soup is indeed specifically labeled GF and there is wheat among its ingredients, then it’s erroneous labeling and you might have a decent product lawsuit to file.
Question: Does this contain msg, and is it made in China
Answer: MSG is monosodium glutamate. It is found in many foods in nature - especially in seaweed/kelp. You eat it all the time and it is recognized as safe by every major food monitoring organization in the world including the FDA. "Monosodium glutamate (MSG), also known as sodium glutamate, is the sodium salt of glutamic acid, one of the most abundant naturally occurring non-essential amino acids. Glutamic acid is found naturally in tomatoes, grapes, cheese, mushrooms and other foods." Generally speaking, MSG is found in many, many foods, but it is not always labeled as such.

About the Brand

Annie Chun was born and raised in Seoul, Korea, and came to Northern California as a young adult, where her family owned and operated a top-rated Korean restaurant in San Francisco.

Annie began selling her signature Asian sauces at the Marin County Farmers' Market in the early '90s. It wasn't long before her loyal customers began to encourage her to start her own company and package the products for the retail market. So, in 1992, with $500 and a lot of help from friends and family, she founded Annie Chun's Gourmet Foods. Her goal was to deliver healthy, authentic Asian foods to Western consumers, and to make Asian cooking "as easy to prepare as spaghetti" for Americans. Many of her products are based on traditional recipes that have been part of her family for generations.

In 1997 Annie moved beyond Asian sauces, introducing the first line of specialty Asian pastas produced in the United States. Her award-winning products are now distributed throughout North America and in some parts of Europe.

Annie lives with her husband and two children in Northern California.

User questions & answers

Question: Where is the expiration date on white miso soup package
Answer: There is no beef nor fish; just dried tofu and miso which is made of beans.
Question: Does dried miso soup still contain pro-biotics? I wouldn't think so
Answer: All you need to do is pour in a cup and a half of boiling water, and wait for the dried veggies from the small packet to get re-hydrated. After getting re-hydrated, the veggies will become crunchy. You should avoid using a microwave on the noodles being covered with water. If you do this, then the mixture will boil over in the microwave. To repeat, just stick a cup and a half of cold water in your microwave (the water contained in a large cup). Once the water is boiling, then you need to pour the boiling water over the combination of noodles plus dried veggies. After soaking for a couple of minutes, then you need to add the thick teriyaki sauce. It makes no sense to do it any other way.
Question: Is this product gluten free
Answer: The original seemed to taste better.
Question: Can you help me figure out how much this soup costs per serving? I came up with $1.69 which seems in comparison to others extremely expensive?? Thank you, Marilyn
Answer: I'm assuming they are the "yucky new and improved flavor", they definitely aren't like the ones I've had before. I was especially concerned about the lack of accurate information on the ingredients.

Question: How long does it last? Like from when it's made to it's expiration date
Answer: No
Question: Is this item kosher? Is the "Instant Authentic Miso Soup" kosher
Answer: Honestly Angela, why would you but this product when your could buy this: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0081CIRCM/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A111T5BUDCP21Y. I used to purchase Sushi Chef miso soup mix until I discovered Hiakari Miso - this is a far superior product. It is also a much better value for your money!
Question: What kind of seaweed is used? Any idea what the iodine content might be
Answer: I just bought two of these to try out-they were on sale for $1 each, but the original price was over $2; so I would say that 1.69 is a good deal for such a good product.

About Miyasaka

Miyasaka Brewery Co., Ltd. was founded in 1662. It all began with Ihei Arimasa Miyasaka, the 12th head of the Miyasaka family, who started a brewery at the city of Kamisuwa, Nagano, Japan. For the next 300 years, Miyasaka spent tremendous amounts of time to create a perfect sake “Masumi,” which today is highly regarded for its aroma, body, and rich taste. One of the secrets of this popularity lies in the company’s successful development of a special high-quality yeast.

In 1916, the company put its experience of making Masumi to the production of Mis. In 1968, the latest technology concepts were introduced and successfully applied to the development of freeze-dried products.

By considering what we eat from a variety of different perspectives, the company has been able to develop a popular range of new products. Our goal is to introduce this traditional Japanese food worldwide, in the most casual and convenient way.
